Lydia, my one year old just asked me if she could have some blueberries. Here’s how the conversation went:
Lydia: Mommy, can I have some more blueberries?
Me: No, baby, you just had some.
Lydia: Please. I’m really hungry.
Me: Are you sure? You just ate.
Lydia: Please.
Me: Ok, here’s a few.
(Lydia goes into her Little Mermaid tent to eat her blueberries. )
Lydia: Mommy, here’s my empty bowl. Can I have some more?
Me: Ok, a few more.
(Lydia goes into her tent to eat the blueberries.)
Lydia: Mommy, I finished those. Can I have some more?
Me: No, Lydia. They’re all gone.
Lydia: (pointing to the refrigerator) Are you sure you didn’t just put them away in the refrigerator?
Me: Lydia, you don’t need anymore bluebberies.
Lydia: Mommy, I know there are some in that refrigerator. Please!
Me: OK, fine. You can have the rest of them.
(Lydia moves to tent once again.)
Lydia: Mommy. I’m done. Can I have some more?
Me: There are no more blueberries.
Lydia: But I’m hungry! I want some more blueberries!
Me: Lydia. They are all gone. You can have some milk instead.
Lydia: I don’t want milk. I want food. Real food!
Me: Fine. Here’s an english muffin.
Lydia: Thank you.
(eats english muffin in high chair)
Lydia: I’m all finished with my half.
Me: Oh, good. All done.
Lydia: But, Mommy, I see you have a half right in front of you.
Me: Yes, this is mommy’s.
Lydia: Can I have some?
Me: *sigh* Fine. Let’s go into your room and finish it, maybe you’ll forget about food if you can’t see the kitchen.
Lydia: (finishes last 3 bites of english muffin in her room) Can I have more?

I am not exaggerating! Ok, maybe a little. Her sentences were a combination of sign language for “more”, “eat” and “please” plus a little pointing. But while she’s signing she’s speaking in her own little language–in full sentences: “Buluwusa? Labadabagabada? Badeegadeebadoogadabab!” I swear she was saying exactly what I told you, only I translated it for you. Where did she come from?!

I love when babies sign. Conner is starting to really get it (it only took 6 months!) and it feels so amazing to actually be communicating with him. And the toddler jibber-jabber is too cute. Hopefully our precious doodlebugs will meet soon and get to “Buluwusa? Labadabagabada? Badeegadeebadoogadabab!” to each other!

That is darling! I do understand. My girls are the same way – eat, eat, and eat more. I swear I don’t even know where it goes they are so little!

Did you check her tent for blueberries? I swear I thought that was where the story was going. That she was storing them away for later.
