We are on week 3 of social distancing and day who-knows-what of shelter-at-home. And even better? It’s Spring Break. I really wanted to make this a special time for my kiddos because at this point, my natural response is to curl into a ball and read. So, I’ve planned out themed days every day this week.
Our first day was Easter–we did Easter baskets, dyed eggs and more. Kinda like my Spring Party so we can leave Resurrection Day to celebrations for Jesus.
I’ve also got a Disney day up my sleeve for later in the week. But today? Today the kids were greeted by some Moose Mail! And inside the envelope was a letter from Mr. Whittaker himself!
(If you know, you know. If you don’t. Well, this is a deep dive into Adventures in Odyssey. Go read this first if you’re totally uninitiated into the world of Odyssey.)
As we went through the day, we opened new envelopes of Moose Mail for new fun activities and of course, listened to many many many episodes of Adventures in Odyssey!
Our first bit of Moose Mail instructed us to gather any quiet activities we haven’t played with in months (craft projects we started and never finished, building blocks, play dough, etc.)
After that was gathered (and some rejected by me for not being quiet enough), we opened our second envelope to find instructions to make a list of the top 10 funniest Adventures in Odyssey episodes.
We got our white board and everyone got to contribute 3 episodes until we got to 10! Here’s our list:
Sunday Morning Scramble
The Mystery at Tin Flat
The Mailman Cometh
Poor Loser
The Coolest Dog
Groundhog Jay
30 Jays Hath September
Snow Day
The Switch
Nothing But the Half Truth
(Can you tell my kids like the Washingtons?!)
While we listened and did our quiet crafts (my daughter made morse code bracelets while my son finger-weaved), we also played a little Adventures in Odyssey Listening Game I made!
You can download your own Adventures in Odyssey Listening Game here!
All you have to do is print out a list for each person and when you hear something on the list, make a tally mark next to it. When you’re done listening whoever has the most points wins!
Later, after lunch and a few chores we opened a new batch of Moose Mail. This one may have been our favorite because it involves food from Whit’s End, his famous WODFAMCHOCSOD! (Pronounced wod-fam-choc-sod. It stands for World Famous Chocolate Soda!)
Basically just combine chocolate ice cream, club soda and chocolate syrup in a blender. Top with whipped cream and a little more chocolate syrup! Here’s an actual recipe if you need it.
And our final piece of Moose Mail? OK, I forgot, THIS was our favorite! We recorded our own Adventures in Odyssey episode. Well, maybe not recorded. But we lip-synched like champs!
We did two full scenes which were hilarious. Here’s a very short clip for you! (My 14 year old is off camera…)
How great was that?!! I wish that could be my job!
We didn’t get to all the activities in our Moose Mail, so here’s a few more ideas if we ever go back to Odyssey:
-Listen to a vacation episode and then let’s recreate some of it outside! (Maybe fight the Philistines? Have a water fight? Have a Hawaiian luau?)
-Print and fold your our own AIO characters! (Use these!)
We had a great day in Odyssey! If you need a good shelter-at-home day, try your own adventure in Odyssey. Right now you can get access to the Adventures in Odyssey Club free for 28 days (no credit card required). You’ll be able to listen to 800+ episodes. You might wanna start with our Top Ten list above!
