I’m doing something I’ve never done before. I will be speaking at the Declare Conference in a little under four weeks. Just typing that sentence put a huge knot in my stomach! The Declare Conference is a blogging/social media conference for Christian women hosted by some of my very favorite people and the speakers are some of my hereos. What am I doing there?!!
When Les and I were on the road, we used to do workshops at churches, we have taught numerous classes at puppetry festivals and more but yikes! This is making me nervous!
My topic is an easy one. Easy, but vast. I’ll be speaking on Social Media 101. That will include Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and a teeny tiny bit of the other stuff like Google+ and whatever else is out there. I know I could talk all the live long day about this stuff—but as I’ll be speaking to newbies and want to honor their time, I am hoping you can help. If you are a newbie blogger (or any kind of blogger–including a wannabe) would you be willing to answer a question (or 6) for me:
What would you like to know about Social Media?
Which social media platforms would you like to know more about?
What part of social media do you totally NOT get?
If you could ask me to explain how I use a certain social media platform, what would you want to know?
Is there a burning social media question you have that you think I could answer?
Am I good at something in social media that you’d like me to explain to you?
I’d love for you to answer any or all of these questions! I’ll give you all the credit if/when my class is a roaring success. If you have a question or suggestion, just leave me a comment below–it will totally help me as I get my talk all organized and shuffled together. THANK YOU!

I’ve got no clue on google plus. I haven’t even tried it because I’m intimidated 🙂
YOU TAUGHT NUMEROUS CLASSES AT PUPPETRY FESTIVALS. I just wanted to make sure we all took note of that. 😉
Seriously, have I offered my presentation from the conference I spoke at last fall? Because if you want, I can email the whole thing to you. It *might* be helpful.
P.S. I always forget to check that spammer box.
So glad you reiterated that point, Mary =)
Also, Amanda – this is what I do for a day job =) I coach Christian congregational leaders on social media. It’s all 101 level =) So shoot me an email if you’d like any slides, ideas or resources! Happy to help. I’ll be at the conference too!
This is your day job??? Anna, I did not know this and can’t wait to talk to you about it this weekend. !!!!
Yes, send it on down, girlfriend!

Google + is the main social media site that I’m not on, and I have no idea of even how to use it. I’m also staying away from it because I feel like the other social media sites already take up a bite of time and I don’t want to add anything else to my plate. Do you think it is worthwhile to be on Google + if you already have a presence on the other social media sites?
I am just starting to think about maybe blogging and feeling a bit of a God niggle about it and God sized dreams (thanks for what you shared over at Holley Girths blog and for introducing me to that)… I am actually not on any social media (gasp!!). Just old fashioned email and checking out blogs on the Internet. I want to know do you actually need to be on social media to blog/have a real presence as a blogger?
All the best at Declare. If I lived I America I would come just to hear you…yours is my fave blog that I follow.
Best of luck at the conference! As someone who tried half-heartedly to blog and never found it take off for me, here are my answers to your questions:
1. What would you like to know about Social Media?
I feel like I know a lot about social media in terms of how to use Twitter, FB, and Pinterest. But, if I were to start a blog again, I could use a few tips on how to set up auto posting and a better rundown on the less popular social platforms (I can never seem to get into Google+, for example).
2. Which social media platforms would you like to know more about?
Google+, Reddit, and Digg spring to mind. I just don’t really get those and I’m not sure where to start…except to go and explore them, but I haven’t taken the time to do that on my own.
3. What part of social media do you totally NOT get?
Auto posting is a big one. How to make videos. Choosing from among all the different comment platforms (and even remembering my logins for the various ones, just as a commenter – it’s confusing!). Also, how do you manage your time on them? And frankly, how do you not get bored when you’re trying to maintain a blogger presence on all of them? I know it’s important to reach the audiences who hang out on all the different platforms, but I can barely keep up with FB, I gave up on Twitter long ago, and frankly I’m just not that interested in checking into tons of different places just to post links and get some tidbits of news.
4. If you could ask me to explain how I use a certain social media platform, what would you want to know?
Digg and Reddit, as I mentioned – how do they work? What is the benefit of using them?
5. Is there a burning social media question you have that you think I could answer?
None I haven’t listed above. 🙂
6. Am I good at something in social media that you’d like me to explain to you?
Yes! SEO! I forgot about that one! But you definitely seem like you have your head on straight in terms of optimizing your content, and I didn’t even know where to start with SEO when I was blogging.
*What part of social media do you totally NOT get? So I totally feel old saying that I just DON’T get twitter. I really just don’t know why everyday people use it instead of just using facebook.
Am I good at something in social media that you’d like me to explain to you? I think you are good at posting personal things but also applicable things as well. And you don’t post too often that my RSS reader is blowing up!
Thank you for providing a place for these questions!
What is the deal with Twitter? I just signed up and it makes no sense to me. Also, I understand the role social media uses in growing a blog but is it enough to just check my social media pages once a day? I have started a blog (barely) but I’m wondering how to grow the following. …essentially how do I use social media to appropriatly self promote? Thank you in advance!
Also, what is tumblr? Should we be joining every new social media site? Thank you again!
I don’t have a question, I just wanted to say that I can’t wait to meet you and you are going to rock your presentation 😉 social media ninjas with faux hawks unite!
Ahem, Crystal — I believe you were the Social Media “Samurai.”
🙂
Sorry for butting in, but I couldn’t resist.
#cantwaittoseeyouallatDeclare!!
Anyway we can get some tips and trick from your class?? I am too far to attend and I would love some information on this to help our children’s ministry!! We’re trying our best to keep up with social media. =/
Melissa,
I hope this isn’t inappropriate to post {it’s kind of self-promoting on someone elses blog}, but as I explained in the comment above I coach Christian congregations on social media best practices through Vibrant Faith Ministries. If you’d like to connect, I’d love to help! You can see what we offer here: http://www.vibrantfaith.org/social-media-training.html
Thanks, Amanda =)
What would you like to know about Social Media? Is there a burning social media question you have that you think I could answer?
I’d like to know how to parent it effectively and wisely. My children are 4.5 and 1.5. As an apple fanatic, I know that technology is QUICKLY changing. And that my children will most likely be faced with social media opportunities that don’t even EXIST yet. However, I think that overarching rules and guidelines can still exist. I’m looking for concise and clever ways to instill online integrity, privacy, and respect into them. While at the same time monitoring my usage and making sure I’m modeling appropriate and balanced amounts of time online.
Help me.
I would love to have an experienced blogger point a wannabe such as myself in the direction of how to get started. Twitter is a mystery to me, why we would want to use it, how to effectively work it, etc. Thanks for your efforts. I wish you confidence as you prepare and share your wisdom.
Hey, girl!
I taught the Social Media Bootcamp class for The Influence Network a few months ago and can send over some of my info and the results of my survey that I took in the weeks leading up to my class. Very similar questions to what you’ve asked here and I think I’ve got about 50+ responses! 🙂
Yes, girl! Send ’em to me!

I add my ignorance regarding Google+, Tumblr and dummy of all dummy questions, how do you upload PDF files to your blog so people can download them? I’m sure that’s a huge duh!
I second the request for you to make some blog posts out of your declare conference speaking session. I live too far away!
I can’t believe you’ve never spoken at a women’s conference. Your social media 101 session was fantastic! You were a delight to listen to not only because of all your knowledge but because your passion for blogging and the things of God really shined through. I’ll take a wild guess and say this wont be the last time either…smile!
Oh, Kacey! You are too kind! I’m so glad we got to chat while we were there. 🙂
