Birthday Cake Puzzle: Inspired by Mrs. Rosey Posey

I know I have told you how much I love the Mrs. Rosey Posey books by Robin Jones Gunn. I had planned on doing a whole series of activities based on these books. As usual, I got lazy sidetracked and never did it. Well, today as the kids were playing I decided to come up with an activity to go along with my favorite Mrs. Rosey Posey book, Mrs. Rosey Posey and the Yum-Yummy Birthday Cake.

First we sat down and read the book. The story is how Mrs. Rosey Posey spends a whole morning making the most wonderful cake in the world–six different layers including chocolate with peanut butter balls, coconut cake with candy hearts and a big caramel apple on top. Mrs. Rosey Posey tells the children not to touch the cake, but one little girl disobeys and the cake topples to the ground. The little girl is sad and learns a sweet lesson in repentance, forgiveness and love.

So, I made a Mrs. Rosey Posey Yum Yummy Birthday Cake Puzzle! I cut out layers of cake (complete with pink icing) and all the matching ingredients.

Then we read the story and tried to put the layers of cake in the right order along with their yum yummy ingredients! Lydia was delighted as we read the book and then tried to match our paper cake up with Mrs. Rosey Posey’s.

She worked so hard on making sure every piece was perfect. She was so proud when we got to the top and sprinkled that caramel apple with chocolate chips! (In case you can’t tell, that’s a chocolate with peanut butter balls layer, then strawberry, vanilla with brownie chunks, banana and kiwi, fudge with nuts, coconut with candy hearts and the caramel apple on top!)

After she posed with Mrs. Rosey Posey’s cake she disassembled it and made her own yum yummy cake. I love her creativity and belief that gravity does not apply to her creations! She had such a fun time and made several versions of her cake. She even packed all the pieces into a ziploc bag so she can take it to with her when she spends the night with Grandmama and Papa tonight!

All in all it probably only took me 10-15 minutes to cut out everything and assemble it. It would be even more fun if I had made it all of fabric and velcro or of magnets! Then she could take it anywhere! Alas, I am not that crafty. {Oooh! You could even give it as a gift coupled with the book at a friend’s birthday party!}

Doing this puzzle doesn’t have any spiritual significance. It’s just a little game of listening and matching. However, it is reinforcing the story into Lydia’s mind. She’ll remember the story of Mrs. Rosey Posey and the lesson of repentance a little more because the story was intensified by this puzzle. I will impress my kids with God’s Word however I can–even construction paper and a yum yummy cake!
