Over the years I’ve talked about my favorite hair styling product and how my hair looks like David Cook from American Idol. I thought it was about time to share the devastation that has happened in my hair-style-life: My stylist moved away. She has been cutting my hair for like 3 years!! She is the stylist you’ve always dreamed of–you can say, “Just do whatever you want” and she does and you like it! *sigh*
Should we have a moment of silence?
So, I’ve been on the hunt for a new stylist for a few months. Well, not really. I just mourned the loss of my girl and then visited my husband’s stylist–who is also a friend of ours. Then I got an opportunity to try out a new salon {Van Michael Salon} in exchange for a blog post. Let’s see…a few hundred words for a haircut? I’ll take it!
Then I remembered what happened the week before I started 10th grade. I got my haircut the day of our church’s back-to-school retreat. It was someplace I’d never been before. And it was by far, the most horrific haircut ever. Imagine if you brushed all your hair forward and then just cut a little oval out for your face to stick out. It looked kinda like that. Only worse. It was also so short in the back that I couldn’t do a ponytail—well, I could but it was kinda like one of those sumo wrestler hairstyles.

I cried for hours. And I do not cry about things like that. I remember my friend Mandy and her sister came over to our house before the retreat. Mandy’s sister was older and always stylish, so Mama hoped she could help with my hair. She looked at it and sadly shook her head. It was hopeless.
After the retreat I went to my mom’s salon so they could salvage my hair and even that poor stylist just shook his head in saddened confusion.
Here’s how bad it was–the guy who asked me to Homecoming in 9th grade and followed me around all year saw me on the first day of 10th grade and said, “What happened to your hair?”
Yeah.
Thankfully, I did NOT have this experience at the Van Michael Salon in East Cobb! It’s a trendy little salon with hairdryers hanging from the ceiling (how great of an idea is that?), a quiet hair-washing room (bliss!) and did I mention it’s an AVEDA salon? I could pour Aveda shampoo on icecream and eat it. Yum.
I sat down with my new stylist, Charlie and the first thing she said was, “Do you want a massage?”
Uhm. Yes, please.
Then, I told Charlie my hair commandments:
1. No part. I detest having a part in my hair. It just looks so severe. Which leads us to…
2. Not severe. I do not want to look like Liza Minelli.

3. Short bangs. You cannot do my bangs too short.
4. Not polished. I like piece-y, messy styles. I don’t want to look like a Dixie Chick.

Charlie sliced and diced, she asked questions and discussed. I told her to play. And here’s my new ‘do…

Nice, huh? {Well, besides the gray.}
It’s the same basic style I always have–SHORT–but also has a cool asymmetrical back and some nice long layers on top–but it’s still super short. Instead of the mop it was when I walked in.
So, if you’re looking for a new salon in the Atlanta area try Van Michael. Of if you live in Tokyo, they also have a salon there. (SERIOUSLY, how random is that?)
Tell me: Do you love your hair? What are your hair commandments?

Super cute! I actually just dyed my hair for the first time in over 4 years. Wow, right? Went from dark blonde to a auburn-ish color.
I love my hair medium to long. I’ve found that if it’s super short it’s easy to care for, but doesn’t look cute on me and anything like a bob looks cute but is so hard to care for. So, ponytail length it is! And as for my hair commandments – no bangs. Again, too hard to manage. I’ve done it enough times to know bangs and small kids don’t mix with me.
how cute!!! I love it! Can I tell you my hair story? Ok? really? All right then…
My hair was PERMED until 8th grade, then when I desperately wanted my hair to grow straight, it grew out into random wavy/frizzy hair – NOT what I wanted. That let to years and years of straightening, including some of the best hair years of my life when I lived in Colorado (no humidity = fabulously straight and shiny hair!). But on my list of commandments were NO “texturizing” or thinning out, no short hair around my face (I’d look too much like my brother), and no wispy bits… I wanted chunky cuts. I went through several years of short hair cuts, too, and I always wound up hating them… At the end of this summer I wound up with a free hair cut to a new stylist that had been trained to do curly cuts – and can I say I LOVE IT!?!? She cut each curl individually, and showed me how to style my hair… I am a total curly girl now – and I feel like I am actually now who God made me to be!!! 34 years of running from my curls… shame on me!
Cute hair! I’m impressed you have so many opinions about your hair. My opinions are “short, but still pony-tail long, and long layers.” Shape? Part? I have no idea!
Completely unrelated: Many, many months ago, I saw a tip from you in a magazine about packing for kids – put clothes by day in plastic bags! (I think you wrote about this in a Camp Primo post too?) But, I have used this both times we’ve taken a trip with the babe, and it has been WONDERFUL! Not only do not have to worry about locating a bottom to go with whatever top I manage to fish out of a bag, or losing a pair of socks, but I have a bag of extra clothes to put in our diaper bag for whatever event we’re going to (we recently went to a football game and wedding over one trip, and the extra clothes I needed were very different, but this made it very easy for me to keep track of everything). I also use this idea in my diaper bag for my emergency clothes – now everything is neatly contained, easy to find, and I even have a bag if it’s needed for the first set of clothes. Anyway, it is a fabulous, fabulous tip. Thank you so much!
Really?!!! How cool! I did the magazine and then never saw it in print!! Thanks for telling me. 🙂
It is CUTE. I had a stylist that I had for eight years and finally had to leave because I couldn’t afford her anymore. It’s a scary thing!
That is a really cute style! 🙂 I used to have super long hair and I never had the need to visit a salon. Then I got it chopped off to around my shoulders, and now I’m struggling to find a stylist I like. I still get nervous when people aim scissors at my head because of my years and years with long hair, so it’s hard to get used to having my hair cut on a regular basis. I wish we had a Van Michael salon in my area!
So cute! What a great style. I just got 11″ cut off of my hair last week. It’s still to my shoulders. 😉 My commandments? No bangs (my face is too short to pull them off). No perms or bleach. No getting too attached to it- it’s just hair. Seriously. I always tell the stylist to just cut… it’ll always grow back. 🙂
True–it’s just hair! Actually, we were just looking today to cut my daughter’s hair and donate to Locks of Love..they need 10 inches. Next time you could do that! 🙂
You don’t want to look like a Dixie Chick. Ha! That was funny!
My rules are simple, no mushroom cut, my hair is too thick to not have layers.
But speaking of layers, I can’t do the choppy layers, I just don’t know how to do hair well enough to mess with lots of layers.
Hair color…. I want it funky. Super funky. But I don’t want “too young” or too blond. My hair is brunette, I want to keep it in that family.
Your hair looks great… very sassy!
No mushroom cut!! Yes! With this short hair, it can get mushroomy! 🙂
My hair is long and straight and red. The auburn red, not the orangey-red. I have a few layers to frame my face, but nothing harsh. I LOVE it! My #1 rule? NO CHEMICALS! I have never colored my hair or put any other major chemicals in it. I get so many people asking me what hair dye I use – it’s all natural, baby!
I did have a time several years ago with short hair and funky, choppy layers. My stylist called it the “lawnmower cut”. She said that when it looked like a lawn mower had cut my hair, she knew she was done. It was a great hair style – it looked awesome on me, but I grew it out because I much prefer long hair.
I’ve never dyed mine either. I know if I start I won’t be able to stop. I’m hoping my grey just comes in evenly… *sigh*
I lived in Atlanta over 15 years ago and that’s where I got my hair cut….too funny! Such a small world! Love your do!
How funny is that?!
Your hair looks amazing!
Thank you, much! I loooove short hair! 🙂
As my 3yo son would say: Cute you! 🙂 I currently cannot STAND my hair and am looking more and more like John Stamos as Uncle Jesse from Full House days. 🙁 I so, so, so badly need a cut!
Yay, I love how you compare your hair to random famous people, too! Sometimes I’ll see a REALLY bad haircut and say to my husband, “Does my hair look like THAT?!!”
a
I’ve definitely cried over a few haircuts. My rule, don’t do anything big on your first visit — give the place a little test drive with a trim and nothing more. For heaven’s sake, don’t do color until you trust the place/person!
Ah I love your hair style! I prefer short too… have thick hair so I have to avoid that above mentioned mushroom doo also (made me laugh) but I’m the worst person when it comes to hair color. Yeah last week it was pink, this week it’s shocking copper red, in the spring it is usually super light blonde. I do not like my natural dish water blonde so I’ve been coloring it since I was about 12! What is worse I allow my kids to color theirs too. Ella got to have temp red hair this summer and she is six. I know people think I”m a freak but dang it’s just hair IMO, not much different than what color shirt you would wear… plus not working in the public allows me to do whatever and play home hair experiments 🙂 fun stuff.
