Our verse this week is Colossians 3:23, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” I picked this one because our pastor spoke about it on Sunday. And it’s one that my kids need to remember—they aren’t cleaning their room because I asked them to do it–they’re working for God. Who am I kidding? I need to remember that! I’m not doing the dishes for my family–I’m serving the Lord!
Totally unconnected, we checked out a huge book: Four Classic Stories by Virginia Lee Burton that includes stories about huge machines (Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, Katy and the Big Snow, The Little House and Maybelle the Cable Car). The stories in themselves teach great lessons about working hard and not giving up. My son loves rescue trucks anyway (side note: we have this Rescue Cars book that he loves to read–it’s just pictures of rescue vehicles. But it’s kinda weird to say, “Now, here’s the bomb squad truck and the search and rescue boat.” Ha!) so I knew this would be a fun verse to pull in a truck theme for him!
{that license plate is my attempt to copy our Georgia peach plates!}
We grabbed some old shoe boxes and covered them with construction paper. We just cut out rectangles and glued them–a good shape practice for Lydia! We added circle wheels, a license plate and some foam headlights. But the best part was the corners of the egg carton I cut out for the cab. We drew windshields and the kids colored drivers. We also named our trucks: Lucy and Gus.
Then I cut out a skinny piece of brown paper (oh, how I love that brown paper!), added a few lines to it to look like a road. Then wrote our verse right down the middle. I taped it to the floor and let the kids push their trucks down the road. They had an absolute blast!
The paper is still in the middle of the floor 2 days later. I’m going to keep it there until it’s memorized!
