Sing a Story

When Lydia was a baby, I remember we had only one little box of books. We read every single one of those books 1000 times. Spot’s First Walk, Miss Spider’s Tea Party and several little board books about colors and shapes. One of my favorite board books was actually a series from Standard Publishing called Sing a Story.

Each book tells a popular Bible story to the tune of a famous nursery rhyme. So, Jesus calming the sea says, “Row, row, row your boat on the stormy sea, the wind and waves were high…” and the Battle of Jericho is to the tune of the Farmer and the Dell, “The walls of Jericho were very strong and stout, but God told Joshua and his men, just march and blow and shout!”

We read these books so many times, we still sing these words first before the original lyrics sometimes! (I just typed all those lyrics from memory!) They are simple little board books with great illustrations but what I think makes them powerful is that they are set to music. My little Lydia (and later Asa) could basically recite the whole story because the story was set to music.

Not only are they singing a story, but proclaiming good things out of their mouth about God’s Word! We own Calming the Storm, Creation and Battle of Jericho. There is also a Noah’s Ark book to complete the collection.

These would be perfect for a new baby gift or for a baby’s first Christmas. I’ve gotten rid of most of our board books but I can’t get rid of these because they are sweet memories with my babies—times when I was pouring God’s Word into my kids’ heart, even when they were babies.

It looks like they have reissued these books in a new, larger format and new titles. The ones we have are little squares about 4 inches wide. The new ones are bigger at 7-8 inches. I noticed you could get some of the old versions for a penny on Amazon. That’s a pretty good deal, if I do say so myself!

{I made a little widget of both versions of all the books —click over if you can’t see it, subscribers}:
