I’ll admit I’m a little bit of a pack-rat. I hate throwing away something because I think, “We could use this one day!” It’s why I have a stash of wrinkled tissue paper, a stack of construction paper with the corners cut off and several one inch pieces of ribbon. Most of the crafts we do consist of scraps and recycled materials. What can I say? I’m frugal! (At least that’s what I’m going to tell myself!)
Today we decided to make a craft for our sponsored kids with some old birthday cards. Lydia just had her birthday last month and we finally took down all her birthday cards. They are so pretty–princessy, sparkly, glittery and textured. I hated to throw them away but really–we can’t keep every card Lydia gets for her entire life. So, we grabbed the cards, our assortment of hole punches, some ribbon and some scissors to make something fun for our kids!
We made stick puppets…
a fun garland…
some sweet bookmarks…
and even a little puzzle game…
Surely they’ll like one of these! And it’s like we’re sharing a little of Lydia’s birthday with them!

I love your pinterest list of flat crafts -great idea! We just sponsored a child through Plan Canada and will use some of those ideas. 🙂
I happened to come upon this through Pinterest – love the idea with the cards! The one thing though, is that I don’t believe the wooden sticks would be able to go through now. For anyone reading this currently, I would ask Compassion about it first. I haven’t ever tried sending ribbon either, but I also think that it would be good to ask first before adding it. Just a suggestion for readers! Love your ideas!!! 😀
Thanks! I think you’re right about the sticks. Wonder if you those craft foam sticks would hold up a card? Or maybe a pipe cleaner. I *think* you can send ribbons, tho’. I’m pretty sure I’ve read that before. Anywhoo, checking w/Compassion is always a good choice!

I wonder if you could probably use cereal box cardboard. It’s still paper but a bit sturdier.
