I’m reading a book about 3 Swedish immigrants called Until We Reach Home by Lynn Austin. It’s not the best book I’ve ever read (although, I hate to say that because I adore Lynn Austin’s Hidden Places
book!) but it’s intriguing to me because my family immigrated to the United States from Sweden.
My mom’s great-grandparents (paternal and maternal) came to America when they were young. So, my mom is 4th generation. I don’t know why, but that is just amazing to me! Mama says she remembers her grandparents speaking Swedish. But she was so little she didn’t realize it was another language–she just thought it was “grown up” talk!
The picture above is my mom’s grandparents in 1963. The children of immigrants. As I listen to this book about the Swedish immigrants and look at the faces of these 1st generation Americans, it makes me shiver at the bravery their families showed and the adventures they encountered. I wish I could read their story!
{I feel like some of my great-greats and other calculations might be off…I always get confused with those!}
I love Lynn Austin and have that book on my shelf to be read. If you don’t like that one, don’t give up on her. Try “A Proper Pursuit” or “Though Waters Roar”. Her Civil War era trilogy was what got me hooked on Austin, so you could try those too.
I think that’s how I found Lynn Austin, too. Is that the Candle in the Darkness, or something? LOVE historical fiction. I’m going to pull up the library’s site right now and see what else they have of hers.
Yes, Candle in the Darkness. I think the 3rd book was my favorite of that series, “A Light To My Path”. The story was told from the slaves’ perspective, and I was gripped at times because I could feel what the characters felt.
My grandparents immigrated from Sweden as well. They ended up in Souther Alberta, Canada. I’ll have to look into that book. Such a neat picture you have.
Cool! I love hearing about immigrants–especially from Sweden. Someone in my grandfather’s family did a big genealogy book of our fam and had it bound (or published, whatever) and it’s so cool to look at the family that didn’t immigrate when my grandfather did–then find the kids that would basically be my cousins if were all in the same country. So interesting to think about what life would be like if they were here or we were there!
My husband was born in 1963, so I’m always curious about photos from that year. My grandfather was from Norway, and my father said he used to read Zane Gray novels in Norwegian!
What a great story and photo! My mother’s great grandparents (so my great-greats!) emigrated to the U.S. from Poland, and she remembers her great grandfather trying to talk to the kids in English… and failing. He never really learned the language, despite being America for decades. She says he was always such a happy man, though — smiling and laughing!
It’s amazing to think how brave our ancestors were, packing up everything and altering the whole course of their lives (and ours). Thanks for sharing!
Same with me. I’m 4th generation too and look at my blonde hair! Just kidding.
Two of my daughters at least take after that side.
I regard something really interesting about your weblog so I saved to fav.
No sé habría muchas cosas que complementar, de todas formas gracias por lo contado en los posts , me parece muy interesante, a pesar no estoy del todo de acuerdo. Un saludo a todos .
Aw, this was a really nice post. In idea I would like to put in writing like this additionally – taking time and actual effort to make a very good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and by no means seem to get something done.
Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
Wonderful submit admin! i bookmarked your word wide web blog site. i’ll seem forward when you will have an e-mail variety including.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
