Mexican Mystery. A Retro Photo.

1952

This is another strange one today. The picture has always intrigued me because I can’t quite figure out what the picture is of. Is it the girl? The horse? Or is that a zebra? Or is it a horse painted like a zebra? Is it a parade? Does the guy to the far right have a tripod?

The weirdest part is the back: Tiuahajana, Mexico, August 1952

Is that really a city in Mexico? And who was in Mexico? I don’t remember a story about my Grandparent’s going to Mexico the year after they were married. It’s a mystery.

A couple things (but they won’t give you any clarity on the who’s and the why’s)

    1. yes, Tiuahajana is a city in Mexico. In fact it’s just past the border from San Diego! People in San Diego call it TJ, for short. maybe you’re grandparents visited family in Riverside (is that the right side of the family?) and spent a day in TJ?

    2. the guy on the far right looks like he has an easel. maybe he’s going to paint a picture of…..wait for it…..

    3. the donkey! actually, i’m not sure if it’s a donkey or not, but it does seem smaller than a horse (of course! sorry, couldn’t help myself) I’m hard pressed to know why there would be a zebra in TJ on parade pulling a wagon (with what appears to have large rolls of toilet paper), but I guess it could be a zebra.
