If you tried to access ohamanda.com in the last 12 hours, you probably got nothing. Because that’s what there was. Nothing. No posts.
Nothing but a search bar and a note that said, NOT FOUND. Ya think?!
This morning the sidebar and top navigation bar was gone. So, I sent an impassioned email to my personal tech guy, my brother Jason.
As we poked around my blog and my control panel, I got more and more sick. Every single post was GONE from my dashboard. NO POSTS. Every single thing I’ve written in the last 3 years GONE!
He chatted with my host, Host Gator for a minute. They told him I could do a relaunch. Or a reinstate. Or some kind of re-something but it would cost money and I had to fill out a request form.
Jason had to go back to work and do actual real-life stuff, so I got on a live chat with Host Gator help. Here’s my conversation with help tech, Trevor Ne:
Did you read it? Because those are my real words. Can you hear the terror in my voice? The relief?!
Thank you, Jason! Thank you, Host Gator! Thank you, Trevor Ne!

WOOT! Yep, I wrote this same post last week!!!
YAY Host Gator!
So glad you’re back up and running, it’s terrifying isn’t it.
I hope that you have backups emailed to you daily, I do!
Wonder what they did?! The wordpress techie in me needs to know!
He said the database was crashed. Who knows?!
phew! I thought for sure it was a redesign thing! Glad it all worked out!!
This post reminds me that I haven’t backup in a while…
Points for Hostgator though! I’ve been quite happy with them.
I have had similar interactions with Hostgator live chat for our church site and they are fantastic!
SWEET!
I must say, if this happened to me on blogger right now, I could never count on that type of support! Do you see that *I’m probably going to move to self-hosted WP* look on my face?
Wow. I would have FREAKED! I’m so glad everything is back!!!
Yikes! Thank heavens for Host Gator and for Jason! It makes me think again about calling one of those companies that will turn your blog into a book. I am counting on this for when I am old and my grandchildren want to see pictures of their parents when they were little. Who has time to scrapbook AND blog? Lisa~
(whew)
And now’s where you’re supposed to encourage everybody to back up their blog VERY regularly: http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Backups
😛
That was my next action point!!
a
What a potential disaster! So glad Hostgator was able to work their “magic” for you.
ugh – that even makes me sick to my stomach for you just thinking about it!
Glad everything is up and running!
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ugh…that just makes me feel sick and relieved for you all at the same time!! Makes me realize how little I know when it comes to the blogging world and how much (how oh so very much!) I need to learn!!
So, so glad everything is back to normal and nothing is lost!!
I’ve used Hostgator for about a year now and one of the reasons was the recommendation I got for their fantastic customer service…which I have used several times now (although nothing like your problem thank heavens!). They are awesome and I continue to be impressed…..Oh, and echoing the comments about getting back-ups emailed to you. 🙂
I understand that feeling!!! I did go to your site, and I wondered what the deal was, but thought maybe it was a problem on my end. Glad it was so quickly rectified.
I feel your pain. About 2 months ago, I thought I lost my entire e-newsletter list (over 1000 people!) I went crazy and was on the phone/email with 3 or 4 tech guys before I figured out what was wrong. Now I have a back up of everything!
Glad you got it figured out!
This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
