Sticky Posts: How I Write a Blog Post {Part 3}

how to write a blog post

source: .imelda

I’ve written my post, done some proofreading and now it’s time to make the post sticky. I don’t want people to read my post then leave. So, adding links TO MY OWN BLOG within my posts help them stick around.

For example, on Asa’s Toy Story Party Food post, I linked to myself FOUR times: back to a post about my original party ideas, one on my Snow White party, one recipe and another about Asa’s Ace Party. (<–Oh, look! I just did it again!)

This really is a service to my readers because I have to assume that my readers have never met me, that they just stumbled onto my blog. If that’s the case, I don’t want them to be confused about something I say. And linking back to it may pique their interest and have them clicking around my site for awhile. And the more they read about me, the more they might like me or subscribe or leave a comment. This also leads to more pageviews and if you have some ads that work off pageviews, this equals more money for you!

You can also go back and do this on some of your exit pages and top posts. It doesn’t take long and it’s a small thing that can bring big return!

    Hi Amanda! Thank you for putting out this series. I really does help me, as a newish blogger. Your website was the first one I linked up too with Top 10 Tuesdays. It was scary at first, but I am loving it! Happy Writing!

    Amanda,
    Thank you for this series. I am a new blogger (I have been blogging for just about a month and a half) and I have already put some of your tips into practice. Very much appreciated!

    Amanda, I’m so happy that I found your site through the upcoming Blogging week list of contributors. I’ve been blogging for quite a while, but admittedly I didn’t take it too seriously or take the time to really learn about ways to make more impact and to increase my readership. I’m enjoying learning more through your series. Your mention of intentionally linking within a post to past posts is something that I’ve read elsewhere recently as well and it makes perfect sense. Thank you for the great words of wisdom!

    Ooh good point! I try to remember to link back to myself, but this is an important reminder of why it’s so important!!

    I’ve read before too that you should always assume your readers are new with every post. I really need to remember that more often. It’s easy for me to assume my readers can read my thoughts and know exactly where I’m coming from, but that probably turns off any new readers. I know how frustrating it can be to me to stumble across a new blog and feel like I’m falling into the middle of a conversation and can’t quite get my orientation. I’ll have to work on making sure I don’t make my own readers feel that way!

    I think everything posted was very reasonable. However, think about this, suppose you added a little content? I ain’t saying your information isn’t good., however suppose you added something that makes people desire more? I mean Sticky Posts: How I Write a Blog Post Part 3 | ohamanda.com is a little vanilla. You might peek at Yahoo’s home page and see how they create post titles to grab viewers to open the links. You might try adding a video or a picture or two to get people excited about what you’ve written. In my opinion, it might bring your posts a little livelier.
