Top Ten {Tuesday}: Coolest Christmas Card Ideas
Posted by oh amanda on December 14th, 2009 . Filed under: top ten tuesday .1. Mini Moo Cards Hybrid
I found this AMAZING save-the-date card by KellyInk last year on moo.com and have wanted to do it as a Christmas card ever since. The cards are entitled “tying the knot”…get it? with the twine? the knot? LOVE. IT.

Anyway, as a Christmas card, I think it would be awesome to fill the brown-paper postcard with all the fun favorite things of the year: trips, activities, special events, birthdays, etc. Not necessarily in order or to be read word for word–kind of like a tag cloud. But a few words would be in an opposing color (red, while the rest is black, perhaps?): Our Favorite Things. Then tie on a picture of each kid (with their ages and my blog URL on the back. ahem.) Get it? Favorite Things? Brown paper packages? Tied up with string? These are a few of our favorite things? Our favorite events of the year? The kids? COOL, right?
One day you’ll get one of these in the mail and be excited. But for now just pretend Kelly & Terrell invited you to their wedding.
2. Recycled Christmas Cards from If Sew
How frugal and awesome is this?!
3. Mini Moo Paper Dolls
Mini Moo cards are my very favorite thing ever. I don’t actually have any but I still adore them. And always think of great ways to use them. You know, if I actually had any.
Here is my new favorite idea. Upload a full body picture of each family member to Moo.com. You can add up to 100 images per set of Mini Moo cards, so if you have a family of 4 like us, you’d have 25 of each person. Then, just drop one card of each person in an envelope. How fun to open up an envelope with four mini paper-doll type cards! I’m so doing this when Asa learns to walk!

{special thanks to Lucky Star Press for responding to my tweet and photoshopping me into a moo card!}
4. Top Ten List
Well. What can I say? I love me a Top Ten list. We did this in 2006. It was famous.
5. Limited Edition Rotating Cards (and blog)
Today I was playing with a digital-scrapbook-ish type Christmas card. It was a fill-in-the-blank type card where I could upload several pictures and place them in several different holes. This is a great idea as I don’t usually have a good picture of all four of us, but can probably scrounge up a decent one of each of us individually.
So, here’s what I was thinking. What if you did Christmas cards the way TV Guide does special edition covers? Print one Christmas card per family member. But just randomly send them out to your friends and family list. Some people would get a picture of you, others of your spouse. The lucky people would get one of one kid or the other.
But the kicker is you add a link to a special post/blog/site with all the Christmas cards so they can see which “limited edition” card they were lucky enough to receive.
Does that make sense? Here’s what ours would look like this year…

So, which one do you want?
6. Scrapbooked.
I know, scrapbooking can be totally overused—or rather underused. But wow, there are some amazing scrapbook cards from Brenda Walton that I’d love to just stare at. And maybe even drool over. And of course, I love me some digital scrapbooking I bought this huge Christmas Card collection one from Shabby Princess. For $4.95. Score!
7. Crafty-licious
When Lydia and Asa are older, we are going to do a crafty card. Like totally handmade. And juvenile. I can’t wait. Here’s a few of my faves right now: Mickey Mouse Snowmen, Cootie Catcher and Build Your Own Snowman!

I love vintage Christmas cards and this would be so fun to send to your family and friends! There are tons of vintage Christmas card listings on ebay. I found one lot of 26 cards that sold for $.99! That is cheap! And even if some of them were used…that would add to the charm!
You know how insurance companies send you calendars at Christmas? I know they are cheezy but for some reason I still think it’s a good idea. Etsy is full of printable calendars like this Petit Paris calendar from Little Brown Pen. You buy it for $5 and can print it a billion times. What a fun Christmas card—you could circle special dates or add your birthdays and just sign your name on top.
10. Awkward Card by Theresa Thompson
This may be the best Christmas card in the history of Christmas cards.
How much do you love that? Please, click the picture and scroll down to see more “bloopers” from this awkward photo shoot. And some other amazing Christmas cards Theresa Thompson has done. *happy sigh* I could look at that picture forever.

Fun fun fun list! I could totally do the recycled Christmas card thing because for some reason I save every Christmas card ever given to us. It’s a sickness. Love your top 10 list card too!

Loved it! I love Christmas cards in general. The more creative the better in my book. I hope the art of sending the Christmas card is not lost in this e-world we live in. I know many people would be thrilled to not have to send or receive Christmas cards but I love ‘em. Love the awkward family Christmas photo idea. I’ll definitely have to do that once the kids get older and totally embarrass them! lol

These are some very creative ideas for Christmas cards. I think in the end, the cards I enjoy receiving the most are the creative ones…
