Oxford peat fires
1934 Art worked
Oxford is the town where my grandmother grew up.
My great-grandfather was Arthur, “Art”.
And he was NOT a fireman.
It’s interesting to think about what happened in Oxford in 1934. The peat fires must have been so big that everyone was helping—including my great Grandfather. And so big that my great-grandmother took a picture of the fire truck her husband worked with.
I also know Great Grandma was madly in love with Great Grandpa. So, she may have taken this picture to commemorate the day her hubby saved the day!
And seriously, can you imagine fighting a fire with that thing?! You would have to be brave!
If you have a retro black and white picture please post it on your blog and leave a link in the comments! We’d love to see it!

I actually got my act together today and posted!! Thanks for the inspiration!
That’s so neat! Now that I have a scanner, maybe I’ll have to participate in this kind of meme sometime.
What state is the Oxford you’re talking about in? I know of an Oxford in Nebraska, but I’m guessing it’s not the same one…

What a cool photo…it does look pretty dangerous though!
Such a cool picture. I didn’t get one posted this week, but I’ll try to be back next week.
By the way I talked to my dad tonight and he was able to identify most of the people in my picture from last week.
The story behind the photo makes it seem so romantic!
How neat! I have a few b/w photos of my family. Loved the story!
I don’t know what all Grandpa did for work- but I do know that during the Depression, he did a variety of work- like working on the roads with the WPA. Maybe the fire department was part of that whole work journey for him.
