My niece is turning four this week. FOUR. How can she be four?! I saw her when she was minutes old (after waiting at the hospital for 17 hours). And now she’s FOUR?! *sniff*
She’s having a Strawberry Shortcake Princess party. You didn’t know Strawberry Shortcake was a princess? Well, I guess even fictional characters have to pretend. I just recently found out the theme of the party, so I didn’t buy a super cool themed present.
(However, I am thinking about buying her some strawberries and making a little card that says, “Happy Birthday! Love, Strawberry Shortcake.” Last year she had a Curious George party and I wrote “Happy Birthday! Love, Curious George” on a banana and left it on the gift table. She was terrified! But it was kinda funny.)
If I had been able to find a cool themed gift, I think it may have included some of this stuff. What do you think?
OK. Maybe some of them are a little odd for a four year old. Oh well.
Now, onto the question. The Strawberry Shortcake Princess invitation said to come dressed as a princess. You’d think this would be easy, right? My daughter is 2. She’s been to Disney twice. She probably has loads of Princess costumes.
Well, she’s still wearing size 18months. None of those plastic-organza monstrosities fit her! How can I throw together a cute Princess costume?
I googled “make your own princess dress” and found about NOTHING. I was hoping for one of those “get a sweatshirt, cut off the top, glue on a ribbon and look like Cinderella” type costumes. But I can’t find anything. Know what I’m talking about?
So, any ideas?
Oh yeah, the party is Sunday. As in tomorrow.
That gives you about 24 hours. Thanks!

Uhhh, good luck finding a strawberry shortcake gift! I went to Target and Wal-Mart and the only thing I could find was a coloring book! Toys R Us was the only place who had ANY selection…and that was only about 3 things. Brandy said she had already gotten a video or two, so I ended up getting a SS baby doll.
I think ole Straw is taking a break from commercialism!
Giving birth to a little girl doesn’t automatically equip you with the ability to whip up a princess costume on demand?! There wasn’t a “little girl” manual handed out at the hospital?
Oh no, I’m in trouble!
Amanda – we are seriously living parallel lives. MY neice is turning 4 this week, too! Freaky!
I love love love the amigurumi strawberry girl. I bought 3 designs from Owlishly… Luke the dinosaur boy, Seth, and Lana the little lamb girl. SOOOO cute! I’m going to make one of Seth and Luke for each of the boys, and a Lana for me!
How about making a little “cape” and a tiara…. she could wear a pretty dress underneath, and the “cape” could be her royal robe (whatever that thing is called). You should be able to find tiaras anywhere, right? Or you two could make one together with pasta or glitter, or pasta AND glitter! or pipe cleaners… You could make the cape out of a cut up sweatshirt if you want, but only if you have an appropriate princess-colored sweatshirt, of course.
So that’s the first thing that came to my mind. Hope that helps!
This one requires some sewing, but maybe you could use as a starting point:

If I were you, I’d go to a department store that has good clearance racks and get a frilly leftover Easter dress that has a big bell-type skirt. (All the dresses at Sears – which I never shop there, I just happened to walk through yesterday and noticed – were 50 – 60% off and I got Madeline some play dresses for $7 a piece.
And then you can get a cheap $3 tiara at Target or Walmart and call it a day. (They also have little wands and other accessories, too, also cheap.)
Hi, I’ve been lurking around for a month or two. I really enjoy your blog. It’s probably too late, but it’s really easy to make a tutu dress, and it doesn’t take very long either. If you search on etsy, you should be able to find pics of what I am talking about.
I’m not going to write detailed directions here, b/c it’s 10:30 Sunday morning and you are probably all set…but if you’d like to know how for future princess parties, just let me know. I’d be happy to tell yo uhow to do it.
Ooops – – – I’m too late to help, but I’d like to know how it went!!!
Somebody just had a picture of a whole row of little girls all with tierra’s on their heads – – – – now whose blog was that anyway???
