Do you remember a few months ago when I told you Mandi and I had this great Christmas idea for our blogs? And we were going to roll it out soon? Well. We never did. And even though we spent hours preparing it and we even got together with all 4 of the kids and well…now you know why it never came to fruition. We were going to find 12 of the best DIY tutorials online and follow the directions specifically. Then see if our creations were equal to or better (or more realistically, worse) than the original. And we were hoping they’d turn out decent enough to be good Christmas presents. It was a really good idea and we even had a great name for it: Not-So-Crafty. Because you know, we like crafts and DIY projects but we’re just not-so-crafty.
Instead, I decided to compile all my favorite tutorials from our not-so-crafty findings and share them with you. Ready? If you’re a little more crafty than us you might be able to pull these off between now and Christmas. So, here you go…
THE TOP TEN MOST AWESOME CRAFTY DIY TUTORIALS THAT WOULD BE PERFECT FOR CHRISTMAS GIFTS
1. Photo Wood Block from New England Through Yummy Mummy’s Eyes
I had a photo wood block puzzle of old fairy tales when I was a kid. I still want to swipe it from Mama’s house whenever I see it. This tutorial is just lovely. I’d love to have one of my own. But also, it would be a fun gift for grandparents, or a friend to commemorate a special event, etc.
2. Autumn Bloom Belt by I Am Momma Hear Me Roar
This thing is just too cute for words. And honestly? It doesn’t look that hard. And it’s CUTE. Did I mention that already?
3. Ruffled Camera Strap Tutorial at Crap I’ve Made
Ever since I saw the purple ruffle camera strap from Eclectic Whatnot, I’ve been wanting one. Of course, you have to know how to sew to make this one. But still. Maybe. One day.
4. Gettin’ Crafty at The Pleated Poppy {a ruffly, flowered t-shirt tutorial}
There are a bunch of these embellished t-shirt tutorials around. But I just love the Pleated Poppy. And I love this shirt. So, there you go.
5. Mod Podged Hand Trees at According to Kelly
This is actually the craft Mandi and I did. And it did not turn out well. Hence the name, NOT-SO-CRAFTY.
6. Subway Art from Infarrantly Creative
I actually am going to make this one for my husband. Shhh….
7. DIY Hairpin Vase from Ashley Ann Photography
OK. Is this the best idea ever? Grab an old jar, hot glue a bobby pin to it and stick a card, photo or ticket stub on the outside. Throw some flowers or other goodies inside and you have a cool, creative and CHEAP gift! (Also, check out her basic candle gets a makeover tutorial. SO cute.)
8. Flower Corsage, Fabric Flower Ring and Necklace from V & Co
We were thinking this one would be fun to do one night–just sit down and see how many you could make for all your girlfriends.
9.Book Wreath from Living With Lindsey
I’ve had this one tucked away for months. I must do it. It’s like a book-lover requirement.
10. Holiday Clothespins from Blue Cricket Design
This is the best neighbor, teacher, mailman gift ever–scrapbook and button decorated clothespins—to display Christmas cards & photos! Just attach to a string! So creative!

I gasped with horror at the thought of tearing up a book to make a wreath. I read the tutorial and I think it’s amazing! But still…my heart is pounding at the thought of tearing up a book. If I made one, it would have to be a classic novel – no trash for my walls! But tearing up a classic novel? Yikes! I did like the sheet music suggestion, too…making copies of music isn’t as bad as tearing up books!
Andrea @ Simple Organized Living says
Wow…I suddenly feel SO uncreative!
Those DIY projects are amazing and I’m certain I could pull many of them off — if I wanted to!!!
Thanks for the inspiration π

I also love the book wreath and the subway art. Although I LOVE books, I’ve been working to get over my books-as-sacred-objects complex. I could probably part with one of several copies of a Jane Austen novel for some classy wall-art. Thanks for sharing these ideas, although I, like you, am a little apprehensive about how my own products would turn out.

Heehee … I was laughing out loud when I read the title from your tweet!!! Oh gosh, the only thing we had going for us was our hashtag line – definitely #notsocrafty!!! We still have 19 days … want to give it a try?! π
Betsy (Eco-novice) says
I love the clothespins.
Alicia says
Oooh love those photo blocks! Thanks for the ideas. I’m “not so crafty” myself π

Those are all fun, but number 8 reminds me of the Big Bang Theory episode when they all made Penny Blossoms. IF you search etsy, tons of people make them. lol
Tiffany @ No Ordinary Homestead says
I have been seeing that book wreath idea EVERYWHERE! Think it’s fantastic although I might also be a bit freaked out about tearing up a book…although I have a feeling we already have some around here that could be harvested for this project π
My 10 lists of last minute gift ideas includes your list today…and I have to say a special thanks for hosting these lists since it made my search for fabulous lists of gift ideas so much easier!

These ideas are fantastic! I’m not so crafty either, but there’s a couple of these I might be willing to try.

So my morning is now a bust… I’ve just opened more than half of the links you shared, eager to figure out if I have the craftiness and such to be able to pull them off! LOL

You certainly found some nice projects. Brought back memories of the year my mom and her best friend decided to make their Christmas presents and chose projects that were a bit beyond their skills. They turned out fine, but there was a little excitement, some major frustrations and lots of laughs getting there.
Dawn says
Oh what a great idea! And why didn’t you gals do this?! (Tongue in cheek here– they look like a lot of projects!) But how fun! I could never come up with stuff like that either so I guess that makes us Wanna-Be DIYers. π
Amy@P2P says
All of this is so awesome. I really, really want to try to book wreath too!
Amanda says
Thanks for hosting! I love the wooden photo blocks best! Too cute!
Tonya @ Live the Adventure says
Great ideas- the book wreath is my favorite. I’m definitely going to give it a try and hope it resembles the picture when it’s done. I love the Top Ten and have wanted to participate for quite awhile now. Finally jumped in and wrote that post! Thanks for hosting. π

I love all these ideas. I personally think that if people put a great tutorial like these up, they should also sell the items. Because I often fall in love with the project, but can never actually do it myself and then I left bitter, thinking, “Darn, I wish I could just buy it!”
Infarrantly Creative says
Wow top 10 for reals??? I am seriously humbled. Thanks
Melissa@SimplyMel says
Cute ideas! I too love the blocks and the book wreath. The blocks would make fantastic gifts. I am SOOO-not-crafty but I would love to handmake a gift at some point. Not at this point but some time in the future…??? :oD Oh, I like the subway art too.

I do not comment, but after reading through a lot of comments on Christmas Gift Tutorials: Top Ten {Tuesday} | ohamanda.com. I do have a couple of questions for you if you do not mind. Could it be simply me or do some of the remarks come across as if they are coming from brain dead visitors? π And, if you are writing on other online social sites, I’d like to follow you. Could you list of every one of all your social pages like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?
