This time next week I will be in the Dominican Republic with World Vision. I cannot even fathom that. The last time I went on a missions trip was around 1995. I went to Ecuador with my home church. We did children’s ministry–puppets and crafts and other activities. My main memory is my mom following a crazy shoe salesman up into a scary high rise building. I also have vivid memories of when I got sunburned because I forgot to wear sunscreen ON THE EQUATOR.
Anyway, that’s not what this post is about. I’m just thinking about the Dominican, the trip and World Vision. So, here are my Top Ten Thoughts, Ideas, Facts and Prayers for My Dominican Republic Trip.
1. The average yearly income for a family in the Dominican Republic is $2300. YEARLY INCOME.
2. My little girl, Mari Luz is turning 12 on May 10. (Five days before MY birthday!) I so wish I was there on her birthday. Many teenage girls in impoverished areas of the Dominican Republic are married as teens. It makes me excited with my $35 a month, I could be protecting her from a too-early marriage and motherhood by ensuring she has an education and basic needs met.
3. 23.5% of the population of the Dominican Republic lives under the poverty level. According to the all-knowing Wikipedia, the US is about 13%.Β In the US, that means about $20, 000 a year. But remember #1? The AVERAGE income in the DR is $2300. So even people below the poverty level here are making more than the AVERAGE income in the DR. I know, I know, the cost of living makes things even out. But honestly, can it ever be EVEN?
4. My husband is going to be Mr. Mom while I’m gone. And my parents will be Super Grandparents. Will you pray they get the scheduling, naps and general comforting of my children ok? And pray for Lydia and Asa. I think they’ll have a fun time, but don’t want them feeling uneasy while I’m gone.
5. My Mari Luz.
6. World Vision has seven Area Development Programs (ADP) in the Dominican Republic. The one in Palmera is where Mari Luz is involved. In this past year, they’ve awarded more than 1500 scholarships to students, vaccinated 600 kids under 5 years old, provided monthly medical care for children orphaned due to HIV/AIDS and honored many children with birthday parties! I love this!
7. I have to take malaria pills tonight. I also got a typhoid, hepatitis A and tetanus shot. I know this is all because of our uber vaccinated American thing but it just makes me feel weird that we would need to take so many shots. It just shows the vast differences between the US and other countries. How could we (Christians, not the US) allow such poverty and sickness to go unchecked?!
8. I’ve been wearing my Lisa Leonard necklace for the last week or so. I hear it jingling around my neck and think about how Mari Luz will be wearing the same one soon. I’m praying when she hears it jingling she’ll remember the faith of World Vision, the hope she has in Jesus and the love I have for her. If you sponsor a child through my blog you can get your own Faith, Hope & Amor necklace by Lisa Leonard. {quantities limited}
9. I get to bring a gift to Mari Luz. Her bio says she likes dolls. But what kind of doll can I buy a 12 year old? Any ideas?
10. Would you spread the word? Here’s a button you can put in your sidebar or even put up a blog post about it. It’s not about traffic to this blog or about just getting the word out—it’s about making a difference in the lives of boys and girls, men and women, communities and in a whole country. I want as many people as possible to get involved with what God is doing around the world. Please look at these faces and sponsor a child today. {{thank you, Mandi for fixing the button!!}}

I’ve got some pretty Barbie dolls that I’ve collected over the years that she may enjoy. I have some that could be played with but most of the other are collector dolls and I’ve been wanting to bless someone else with them. Email me if you’d like more info.

I’m so excited for all of you going on this trip. And getting to meet Mari! Well, that’s just Jesus! I’ll be praying for you.
I would say if Lydia has any dolls that aren’t too babyish, get the same kind. That way you can tell her you have its twin at home and will think of her every time you see it. Or something like that. Make it a connection point between you two, just like your necklaces.

#4…why the worry? You’re husband is totally capable of doing this. Sorry to tell ya, but there’s no way your kids will remain on schedule, but that’s ok. They will have the time of their lives. It would be boring if there were never any change ups.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.
