Top Ten {Tuesday}: I Promise I’ll Never Forget

To my Lydia on her fourth birthday,

Everyone told me when you were first born to treasure every second because it would go by so fast. Of course, I believed them. But today, as I look at your fourth birthday, I cannot believe how fast it has actually gone. Last night I read Let Me Hold You Longer to you. You danced with excitement but Daddy and I wiped away tears. Tears that held sadness and happiness, memories and hope. We are enthralled with our four year old…but sometimes we miss our tiny infant Lydia, our amazing one year old Lulu, our funny two year old Lyddie and our grown up Lyd. So, throughout the years, in those quiet hours of nursing you or in the middle of an especially fun day, I would say to myself, “Amanda, don’t forget this. Remember this one thing forever.”  Here are some of the things I have purposed to never forget…

1. Kissing your nose when you were just minutes old. It was so cold.

2. Listening to your feet brush against the arm of the rocking chair as I nursed you.

3. They way you signed, “I love you” as a one year old—with a closed fist!

5. Asking me to stop and pray for Papa in the grocery store because you just thought about him. The way my heart felt when you first talked about “Hepatitis C”.

6. Explaining how you will call me on my cell phone when you are grown—so you can invite me to go to Monkey Joe’s with you. Telling me you are going to marry Asa when you grow up. Or have a baby and name him Asa. Then bring him over to my house so our Asa’s can play together.

7. The loud thumb sucking noise when you are just about to fall asleep…it’s the same today as when you were 6 months old.

8. Laying on the floor of your room in Birmingham–watching you play, feeling the soft skin of your arm, the size of your onesie, the ENORMITY of that small moment.

10. Carrying you tummy to tummy down the stairs as a three year old…your long legs hitting my legs on the way down.

Happy Birthday, sweet girl. I’ve said it every year and I’ll probably say it forever: I love you more and more every day.

  10. Beautiful! I tell myself to remember those small moments, too, and I hope I do, but I imagine I will remember the feeling more. Always thankful, but never enough time with my guys. Or always tired, wishing they would go to sleep! Let’s pretend it’s the former, okay? It makes a much nicer Hallmark card.

    What a wonderful birthday post. Happy Birthday to your beautiful daughter! What an adorable baby picture! My oldest turned 4 in October and I look back at her baby pictures and think ” That adorable baby CANNOT be this precocious, sassy preschooler, can it??”

  30. Thanks for this tip, but sadly the installer detects that my drive is not a Sandisk drive and refuses to run. If anyone finds a solution for a 4GB Maxell Retractor then please post it! Their website only seems to have win98 drivers on it.
