Wow – what an awesome interview Amanda had with Sally Lloyd-Jones yesterday!!! If you missed it, check it out – and leave a comment to win one of her fabulous books!
Now, on to one of our long overdue activities (overdue, because we’ve had a very lengthy break from any crafty activity)… and I promise, if you stick around to the end, there will be goodies for you, too!
When the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it. I will remember that my covenant will last forever. It is a covenant between me and every kind of living thing on earth. Genesis 9:16 (NIrV)
As Elias and I dug through his Noah craft bag, the first thing that caught his eye was a prism that his class used to make rainbows and talk about God’s covenant with all living things.
The prism from his class (the teacher bought one for each child – isn’t that awesome?!) is on the far left, and then I gathered some other things from around the house that I thought might also make some cool rainbows – a crystal vase, a star-shaped glass candle holder, another prism that used to hang in my mom’s kitchen window when I was a kid, and a crystal-cut (but definitely not crystal) punch cup.
As I went to get a flashlight and Elias danced with impatience, we talked about how God put a rainbow in the sky as a covenant (a promise) to remind His people that He would never destroy all mankind by water again. I wanted to impress upon Elias that the rainbow is also a symbol of God’s faithfulness and mercy – faithfulness to His creation and mercy to Noah and his family, and in turn extended to all people.
So… middle school earth science kicked in as I realized the flashlight was not creating rainbows with the one prism I knew made beautiful rainbows… white light, Leigh – you need white light….
Outside we troop – mom, preschooler, toddler, and very breakable glass…
.. and we find rainbows! Elias loved turning his toes into rainbows.
This prism from his craft bag was cool – you could see the definite rainbows, although they were really tiny. The other items – vase, candle holder, and cup – made no fun rainbows at all… I was really disappointed in the real crystal vase. I thought for sure that would be a fun one.
Elias also found something else that made rainbows when the sun shined through it… a plastic flower wind-mill-thingy. He was so excited that he found the rainbow himself! And I hope that this lesson of making rainbows will help him remember God’s covenant with Noah… and also God’s new covenant with man through His Son.
If you want to make some rainbows, try out some of the things in your house. I really am surprised that the crystal vase didn’t work… maybe someone else can get some crystal to work? I know that you can get prisms at stores and online… maybe also try your local thrift store. So tell me, what’s your favorite rainbow craft/activity to do with your little ones?
Do you want to know what you could win if you do leave a comment with your favorite rainbow activity? Have I made you wait long enough? I wanted you to be thinking about colors, so you can choose fabric for your own…
…custom Day in the Park Backpack Tote! I just recently got this awesome pattern, and I am itching to make myself one. So I’ll make you one, too! Take a look at the pattern and the Flickr group pool for examples of this great “cross-over” bag – part tote, part backpack – perfect for taking your kids out rainbow-hunting! Then pick your favorite colors (or even favorite fabric!) and give me a couple weeks… and you’ll have your own custom bag!

Love the bag!!
My favorite rainbow activity is tie-dye. It’s messy, but it’s so fun and the kids love it. We always start with primary colors (red, yellow, blue) and then watch and learn how those can create anything.
Does following you on twitter count as a subscription? If so, put me down for two entries. 🙂 Thanks!!

I will be completely honest here. I don’t think my son has ever seen a rainbow… other than in pictures and I doubt he would even know what it was. You have inspired me though and I am going to try to figure out a way for him to make them himself. For now, I think I will take him outside and use chalk to make a rainbow. 🙂

What fun! My girls love rainbows & this is something we haven’t done yet. Will definitely have to get some prisms for this coming school year.
We have taken different colored tissue paper & made rainbows that way. They look so pretty hanging from their ceiling!
Oh forgot to say, I love that bag! So cute.
I have your button on my side bar… yikes I need update it with the new one, though!
I subscribe to your feed. 😉
We’ve recently been coloring on the front porch w/ sidewalk chalk. I wish I had thought of it sooner – my daughter loves it, and we don’t have a sidewalk or driveway. When we get tired of the pictures, we can just hose off the porch!

Leigh! I had no idea how talented you were–well, singing wise I did, but not craft wise! I’ve read through several of the posts here and am so excited to have it for future reference. Since my 10 month old tends to put everything in her mouth right now, we’re not doing many crafts, but looking forward to using your ideas soon to continue to teach her God’s Word. I’m adding your button to my blog as well! Hope you are doing well! –LeAnn

what a great giveaway
We’ve drawn rainbows with crayons/markers countless times, of course – but I have to admit my husband is more crafty in some ways than I: one day he and my daughter colored and baked a beautiful rainbow shrinky-dink that hangs in our window.
We don’t have any rainbow/craft activities but I still would love to be entered if possible! Thanks for the awesome giveaway!
I remember when I saw the movie “Pollyanna” when I was young. I was especially amazed at the part where she discovers that the prisms make rainbows. Also, a sunny day and a waterhose can make rainbows as well. I have shared that little tidbit of information with lots of children..they are equally amazed when they see it the first time.
Not feelin’ too crafty right now, but I’d love to win the bag.
how cute
This activity is terrific….My daughter loves rainbows and recently shared that she wants a rainbow room

love the bag con5459(at)gmail(dot)com
My favorite rainbow activity is to color on coffee filters with markers and then put a few drops of water and tie in the middle with a chenille stem for a butterfly body and head.

I’m new to the crafty world, so don’t really have any tips to share yet. However, that is the most beautiful, unique bag, and I would be proud to sport it around town this summer! Thank you!
LOVE that bag!! I teach kindergarten – so, yes – I do love doing crafty things with the kids! But, there are so many things (too many to list here!)

i’m not crafty – sigh! that’s why I love your site. 😀
My daughter really likes them.
This is a little of a “cop-out” because you can find it on MANY preschool teaching websites, but… I made rainbow streamers with my preschoolers (guess I should do it with my own kids now…). You cut the whole out of a paper plate and then glue colored streamers (in the order of the rainbow) onto it. It becomes a wonderful dancing/waving/fun “toy”. The kids loved dancing to great music. Great brain and gross motor development. Indoor and out! You can talk about how God (through his promises) makes us dance for joy!
My son is only 13 months, but I actually have a neat “rainbow prism” activity which I will show him in the future. If you take a a clear glass and add some multi-colored glass stones like the ones you use for crafts, put it at an angle with the sun–and you will get a different rainbow effect.
We’ve just made rainbow collages and with sidewalk chalk, but I love the idea of ACTUALLY creating rainbows!
Thanks, Leigh!
Thank you for offering this great prize!
count me in please!
I would love to win this pretty tote
