I started going to camp when I was in 3rd grade. The camp we went to was called Camp Cherith. Cherith is the brook that Elijah went to when he was escaping from Jezebel. God ordered some ravens to bring him bread and meat every day. So, at Camp Cherith all the counselors and staff go by bird names. It kind of alleviates the whole first-name-last-name-mr-mrs. problem, too. Plus, it’s kinda fun to have a bunch of grown ups walking around calling each other bird names.
My mom is Hummingbird. Which looks like our last name, Hunnicutt. Plus, she’s nonstop, just like a Hummingbird. Daddy is Rooster. Not the proud strutting rooster. He’s just the opposite–more like the rooster that reminds you of Jesus. Staci is Daisy…as in Duck. Kristen is the funny one who goes by Egg. My brother Jason is Jay. My drumming cousin is Drumstick. We’ve had Tweety, Zazu, Quetzal, Condor, Duck, Chickenhawk, Turkey, Dodo, Teal, Thrasher and more!
When I was in the CILT (Campers in Leadership Training) program we gave a lot of thought to our bird names. And my dad dubbed me Puffin. I thought that was the most hideous name ever. But as mosts nicknames do, it stuck. For the rest of my camping career, I was called Puffin by every girl that came through that camp. And I still have a soft spot in my heart for those little birds. (cue: sigh)
This year my mom is the camp director of her own camp, Camp Rocks. All the counselors still have bird names. And the best part is my aunt & cousin from California are coming to camp! (They’ll be here today at 3! I can’t wait!) My aunt will be helping out her brother, Rooster in the kitchen. I think her name should be Ovenbird or Hen. (Get it?! Huh? Huh?) My cousin is probably going to go by Sparrow…as in Jack. (ah, yeah!)
What would your bird name be?

Hmmm… bird name? I would be chickie.

Sounds like fun! You know, one of Hugh Hefners girlfriends calls him Puffin! I thought you’d enjoy that. I think maybe my bird name would be…Susie- I know that’s not a bird name but it was the name of a bird that I had as a pet growing up.

I would have to go with Turkey! I miss those camp days…

Big Bird… unfortunately. Great for children’s entertainment, not-so-great to look like! 🙁

I just got home from picking my girls up from Lone Star Camp Cherith. This was their 4th year to go, and my oldest will begin her CILT program next year. She couldn’t be more excited. It was a lot of fun to read your Cherith story. May all you little birdies be as blessed as my girls were this past week!

Funny, I was running girls’ camp all week. 🙂
Camping’s been on the brain lately.

I have always loved chickadees, so I’d say a chickadee. I can’t tell you what they look like, but I remember in grade school my friends and I would call each other chickadees :c)
