2010 Disney World Moms Panel Training Day 4

by oh amanda on August 30, 2010

in disney,me

Do you remember back in March when I updated Day 3 of my Moms Panel Training? The very last line was, “Hope you can wait till August when I update next!” I totally wrote that sarcastically KNOWING I would SURELY update before AUGUST! And oh my goodness gracious sakes alive, if I don’t update it today or tomorrow then it will be SEPTEMBER!

So, in honor of the 2011 Panel search coming up in September, the amazing Moms’ class of Twenty-Ten and Darby who commented “Don’t make us wait til Aug…” on my Day 3 update, here is DAY FOUR OF THE 2010 DISNEY WORLD MOMS PANEL TRAINING EVENT!

We began with a little meal in one of the ballrooms of the Contemporary. Not sure what we ate, but apparently I felt the need to brush my teeth afterward. Thank goodness Disney Dad Marc brought some mini toothbrushes.

Then we were ushered into another room where we began computer training along with legal mumbo-jumbo instruction. I cannot remember tell you all the top-secret Mickey Mouse stuff we learned this day. But I’m sure you would be jealous if you knew.

All I do remember is that you can send secret messages on the Moms Panel dashboard. Not that I was sending those messages when I was supposed to be listening, of course.

In the middle of our training, just as we were getting restless, we stopped to watch a clip of Disney’s The Princess and The Frog. When the clip was over the music didn’t stop. And I knew–KNEW that something was happening! And sure enough Princess and Tiana and Prince Naveen walked through the door. And true to form, all of us began shrieking, crying and giggling. You might remember my  live vlog about it.

After they left us, there was more training, more food and a little commercial by one of my favorite places at Disney–the Disney Florist. They are the ones responsible for the huge in-room celebration I received at the #magicalmoms event and the pink deliciousness on Day 1. I am going to secretly set up a little in-room celebration for my family when we go to Disney NEXT MONTH!

Day 4 was a crazy whirlwind of a day because after lunch we loaded up on a bus and went to the ESPN Wide World of Sports. If I was into sports it would have been super cool. Since I only like Disney and NOT sports it was only “cool”. We did get to try out the 3D tv to watch some snowboarding…or skating…or maybe it was football? Anywhoo. That was kinda neat.

Then FINALLY it was time for a park–we went to Epcot and ate at Marrakesh in Morocco. There was lots of delicious food and maybe a little belly-dancing…

After dinner we waited around the American Adventure (and got our picture taken with Mr. and Mrs. Claus…does anyone have a picture of that?! Suzannah saves the day:

Ho Ho Hoop Dee Doo!!

(and now back to your post…)

before we got to enjoy the amazing and breathtaking Candlelight Processional. This is a beautiful Christmas celebration about…you’re not gonna believe this…Jesus. That’s right, we actually heard THE Christmas Story at Disney World! It’s a musical show with a full orchestra, huge choir and my favorite part is the conductor and the sign language translator! {Look! I even answered a question about my love for the Candlelight Processional!}

So, here I am sitting at Disney World with my new Disney BFFs waiting to hear the story of Jesus’ birth when lo and behold, the craziest drunk guy I have ever met sits down in front of me. I have been trying to locate my tweets from that night because I just don’t think  anything funnier has ever happened to me. Joel, Jonas, Suzannah, Trina, Andi and I were trying not to laugh at this guys’ face while tweeting about him behind his back. *happy sigh* I am laughing just thinking about it.

And Christmas didn’t stop with the Candlelight. As soon as that was done we jumped (hopped) over to the Magic Kingdom for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. And oh! Can I just say that it was like seeing the Castle for the first time again? Such a very fun party. (OK, maybe the Stitch show wasn’t that great…) But free cookies? Free hot chocolate? A very merry Christmas parade? Snow on Main Street? I’m sorry, you just can’t get more magical!

Unless! You decide to stay for Disney’s EXTRA MAGIC HOURS and go to Magic Kingdom until 12 in the morning! Joel, Brenna, Maria and I went to Mickey’s Philharmagic (or did we? I know I left my ticket & room key there…), Pirates of the Caribbean and…what else? All I know is it was so fun and crazy that we were Disney-drunk-tweeting. (That’s when you are so crazy high on Disney that you just tweet the most ridiculous random things ever.)

And that was Day 4.

Should I just go ahead and do Day 5? It’s the day I went home so it’s kinda sad.

Nah, I’ll just wait. April of next year might need a good Disney post…

{And here’s Day 1, Day 2, Day 3}

*this giveaway is closed but keep reading because the info is great!*

I’ve been answering questions on the Disney World’s Mom’s Panel for several weeks and let me tell you: IT IS HARD! Between newbies and those who have been ten billion times, the questions range from so general (“what should i do?”) to completely specific (“i’m leaving at 7:14am and want to get a mickey ice cream bar, meet mary poppins and get front row seats at fantasmic and get discount tickets while sleeping at cindrella’s castle. how can i do that?”).  But that’s really how it works, anyone can submit a question and then the Moms search through the questions, find one that suits their expertise and answers it!

So, after a few weeks of scrolling through the 1000′s of questions we get every day, I’ve compiled a very helpful (if I do say so myself) list on how to get the most out of the Disney World’s Mom’s Panel.

1. Use the Search.

disney moms panel

There is a search feature on the front page of the panel. Before you ask your question try searching. If you are asking about static things—”Where can I meet Cinderella?”, “Which park has the castle?” or “Can I bring coolers into the park?”, you’ll probably find your answer by simply searching. This also works well for opinion questions such as, “What’s the best character meal?” or “What’s your favorite water park?”

2. Read the Bios.

Every Mom and Dad has a bio with lots of vital information inside. Some of our moms have experience traveling with large families, preschoolers, teenagers. Some are Florida residents or Disney Vacation Club members. If you read a bio that sounds similar to your own family, then keep reading–all the questions they’ve answered are below their bio. You’ll find lots of good info within their answers!

3. Pick a Mom.

disney moms panel

To go along with the bios–once you find a mom or dad that is an expert on your particular need then ask them a question! At the bottom of every bio page is a link to ask that mom a specific question. On mine, you can click “Ask Amanda a Question” and it will send it directly to my queue. The plus of this is that I usually answer those questions first! So, you’ll get your answer sooner than by adding it to the general pool!

4. Check Your Email.

When you ask a question, you will receive an email that says, “Hey, we got your question!” Then when your question is answered you’ll get another email that says, “Hey! They answered your question!” So, don’t worry about having to search through the bajillion answers to find yours—they’ll let you know!

We work hard at answering the oldest questions first, so even if it takes a week or more, keep checking that inbox! We’re trying!

5. KISS.

I know true love’s kiss is an important one to Disney, but I’m talking about the “keep it simple” kinda kiss. If you can narrow down your question to uh…ONE question, it makes it easier for us to answer. When a question asks four or five questions in one, especially questions that are not remotely related, we tend to skip over those for “easier” answers.

So, instead of asking, “What attractions are best for my 1 and 4 year old? Will there be 2% milk at my resort? Oh, and where is the best place to catch the bus to get to Downtown Disney?” Try asking a few separate questions—they’ll probably get picked up quicker! Plus, we have character limits on our answers, too. If there are too many questions in one, we won’t be able to get all our answers in!

6. Use the Site.

Admittedly, the Disney World website is not the most user friendly. It’s because there is so much information it’s hard to put into a logical and orderly fashion. But if you do a little research first and then ask a question, it will help us answer your questions better.

For example, ask “I saw on the Disney site that September 30th is considered value season but October 1 is not. Why?” as opposed to, “When is value season?” We’ll be able to understand your question better and give you a fuller and more detailed answer.

7. ReAsk.

I know, that’s not really a word. But the idea is good. If you ask a question and get an answer that you don’t understand, feel free to ask that Mom or Dad specifically what they  mean. Or if you just find an answer to a question while searching and want to know more, ask that Mom or Dad to clarify!

I’d be honored if someone saw one of my answers and wanted to know more! Then it starts to be a real conversation–how fun!

8. Wish Upon a Star!

disney world moms panel

OK. Not really. But did you see the little ratings button? Go ahead and click 5 stars. We know it doesn’t really mean anything and it doesn’t up our pay (we don’t get any) but it does make us feel better to see that someone likes our answers! Well, they did away with our star ratings. But maybe you could SHARE it on facebook? We would LOVE that!

9. Videos.

There are several great videos about planning, special tips and cool events all done by the Moms Panel! You can actually see an in-room celebration, how the Pirate’s League works, the Baby Care centers and how to do the baby swap on an attraction! These videos are full of awesome tips from real moms (and dads!).

10.  ASK ME A QUESTION.

What can I say? I’d love to answer your question!

{Special thanks to fellow Disney Mom, Suzannah of Zannaland.com and Disney Dads Joel and Jonas for helping me compile this list!}

disney world planning tips

In honor of the Mom’s Panel I contacted a fellow Disney Mom…er, Dad to help me out today. Enter Doug Ingersoll. Not only is he a member of the Mom’s Panel, he is also an author! He wrote The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Walt Disney World and now has an amazing Walt Disney World Complete Travel Guide iPod App! It’s only $4.99 which is a steal for all the cool stuff it’s got on it!

Just like his book there are maps, reviews of parks, attractions, restaurants and resorts. It’s amazingly detailed and really easy to read and use!

Doug is generously giving away a copy of his new app to TWO readers today! Just think, next time you go to Disney not only can you ask little old me a question, you have all of the Mom’s Panel at your fingertips AND you’ll have this handy dandy app right on your phone!

If you’d like to win this iPhone app all you have to do is leave me a comment about your favorite Disney memory, the first time you went to Disney or when you are planning your next Disney trip.  That’s it!

Four months ago I went to this little place called Disney World. Anyone remember that? Yeah, it was kind of a big deal. Well, apparently it was so big I forgot to tell you about Day 3. Which was pretty spectacular. So, since my official quarter on the Walt Disney World Mom’s Panel begins Thursday (EEEEEEEEK!) I thought I’d devote this Top Ten {Tuesday} to

STUFF I NEVER TOLD YOU ABOUT 2010 MOM’S PANEL TRAINING!

{alternate title: Do You See Why I Don’t Scrapbook? I’d Be Fourteen Years Behind.}

1. Day 3 of training began with an early alarm so I could catch the bus to Epcot. Closed Epcot. Freezing Epcot. Breezy, Windy Epcot. Look-the-sun-is-not-even-out-Epcot. And why were we here? For a photo shoot, baby.

We got lined up on a big riser. There were at least 20 extra people bustling around doing who knows what. Finally, the cameraman says, “OK, the Fab 5 will be here in ten seconds.” We’re all very snarky and start counting down, “10, 9, 8, 7…” and NO JOKE when we get to 3 I see Mickey and Minnie come around the corner followed by Donald, Goofy and Pluto. I think I may have cried. How are they so perfect?!

After our group photo it was time for solo shots. Here’s Andi from Alabama—Birmingham, that is. How much of a star is she?!

wdwmoms3

2. And now it’s my turn! Minnie & Mickey flanked me at first then stepped away for TWO CLICKS when the photog took my headshot. TWO CLICKS.

wdwmos2

3. Finally we were released from freezing photo prison and were taken to a secret room in the American Pavilion. I was first in line by about 5 minutes. And I was so giddy I clapped my hands, filled my plate and took a picture. Yes, that is a Mickey Mouse waffle you see.

wdwmoms5

4. Now. It’s onto our video shoot. Before we could go onstage, we had a little touch up to do. This is Dorothy from Canada, eh. Our lovely (.) makeup artists primped and smoothed our hair and brows until it was time for more smiling and waving at the camera.

wdwmoms8

5. The Fab 5 joined us again for this “Meet The Moms” video shoot.  We also did individual videos for Disney Dads, moms of preschoolers, etc. While half the folks were taken to other locations, the rest of us were just hanging out. INCLUDING THE FAB FIVE. They just stood there with us. Just acting like, well, Mickey and Minnie, Goofy, Donald and Pluto. I mean, who gets a shot like this? It’s a like a postcard!

wdwmoms6

6. Pretty soon, Joel aka Zipadeedoodad started showing Mickey & Minnie pictures of his kids. It was by far the funniest and cutest thing I’ve ever seen. They acted like they were absolutely stunned at Joel’s pictures and loved each and every one. If I didn’t want to sound trite I’d say it was truly magical. OK, it was. It was magical.

wdwmoms1

7. Next it was my turn. I asked Minnie to help me pose like her. She tried to help but apparently I’m not cut out for mousehood.

wdwmoms4

8. On our way back to the hotel from Epcot (FINALLY), we were taken by a special VIP bus driven by Tim. Tim has been a VIP chauffeur for over 20 years at Disney. He drives Tom Cruise, Kelly Ripa and who knows who else. He also drove the #magicalmoms. And when he saw me HE REMEMBERED ME. I was so stunned (how good is this man at his job?!) that I had to have a picture with him. I put the watermark over my insanely bulging stomach. Good lord.

wdwmoms9

9. That night we went to the Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue in Fort Wilderness. I thought I could not love Fort Wilderness more than I already do. But…the Hoop Dee Doo was so fun that I think it literally changed my life. It is an absolute MUST on your next Disney World vacation. Hoop Dee Doo!!

wdwmoms7

10. Oh, and this is also the night that I had my favorite picture taken of me. Yes, even over the headshot with Mickey & Minnie. This is the infamous Hoop-Dee-Doo Pork & Beans picture:

Well, that’s the Top Ten and I haven’t even gotten to that evening’s festivities. Hope you can wait till August when I update next!

2010 Disney World Moms Panel Training: Day 2

January 4, 2010 disney

So, two weeks later (or three, but who’s counting?) I want to tell you about the rest of my Disney Mom’s Panel training! The next morning (after I took a shower with no kids pressing their noses to the door) we had breakfast at Kouzzina by Cat Cora. I had a blueberry orange oatmeal pancake…complete [...]

2010 Disney World Moms Panel Training Trip

December 17, 2009 disney

When I stepped into the airport two weeks ago, I left my nervous husband and crying kids in the car. I got a tiny bit misty-eyed as I walked away from them. But mostly? I was totally excited to be flying to Disney World BY MYSELF. I sat down on the plane determined not to [...]

November 12, 2009 disney

I made it. I MADE IT. I’m a Disney Mom! Are you kidding me?!! When I sent in my application (which was only three questions long) it did not even cross my mind that I would actually make it. I just knew that if you did NOT make it your consolation prize was to be [...]
