I loved last week’s post about Handmade Gifts and got so into it that I went to the craft store and bought stuff to make some of the gifts decided to do a similar Top Ten this week. This time it’s about kids’ gifts—made BY kids FOR kids. These are the perfect gifts for kids to make for their friends, siblings or classmates.

So, get your kids ready! These are my…

TOP TEN EASY HANDMADE GIFTS FOR KIDS BY KIDS

1. Matching Game from Yay! I Made It

matching game for kids

This is made from juice lids and pictures off the internet. How easy is that?! You could personalize them with your kids’ friends’ favorite toy, character or even pictures of the kids!

2. Bleached Out Tees from Design Mom

christmas gifts for kids

Design Mom is actually the one that inspired this list. Their tradition is that the kids make handmade gifts for siblings. I LOVE THIS. This is an easy sticker-and-bleach thing that any kid could do!

3. Slime from Impress Your Kids

Why, yes, this is my very own tutorial. But hey, it was fun! And kids love slime! It would be fun to make and give! I did find some cute packaging from HomeSpun Threads!

4. Homemade Smell Dough from We are The Joneses

christmas gifts for kids to make

I adore this idea–this is gingerbread, peppermint and cherry scented playdough! What a fun gift to give–you could just tie them up in tissue paper and tie some Christmas cookie cutters with it. Fun!

5. Recycled Crayons from Make & Takes

homemade gifts for kids

This one’s been around a lot—I even made it for Lydia’s friends a few years ago. We used star muffin tins and it was really cute. I was going to do pirate crayons for Asa’s birthday and time got away from me…plus I thought skull and crossbones crayons were kinda weird for kids…

6. Embellished Gloves from Design Mom

gifts for kids

Another fun one from Design Mom. I just love the idea of making the same thing for all of your siblings and personalizing it for each of them.

7. Shrinky Dinks at Impress Your Kids

christmas gifts for kids

Leigh made these with her boys for Father’s Day. But you could easily make zipper pulls or backpack tags for friends. Plus, if you don’t want to buy shrinky dink paper, you can use #6 plastic (like the tops on take-home containers) and it will be FREE!

8. Bottlecap Necklace

diy kids gifts

Now, I made a Thanksgiving Turkey bottlecap necklace on Impress Your Kids. But, I don’t think anyone would want it for a gift. What I really want to make is one where you fill the inside with stuff and glaze over it! I love these from Obstinate Pursuit. It looks pretty easy, too.

9. Simple Notepad Holders from Let’s Explore

diy christmas gift kids

Lydia loves having her own pad of paper. She loves to make lists or write us notes and then stick them on our doors. This would be her favorite gift ever!

10. Poem or Story

diy christmas gift kids

I think it would be super cute to lead your kids in an easy poem (like this Snowman one!) and frame it. I know another kid wouldn’t appreciate it as much as an adult would, but I think it would just be so cute to open up a personalized poem or story from a friend. I can just imagine Lydia thinking up words to describe her cousin Nora, she’d never feel insecure or unimportant in her life after she read that thing! Lydia worships the air Nora breathes!

So, what do you think? Fun, right? I think I still have time to whip some of these up with Lydia. Actually, Asa might be able to do some of these—well, with some help. What’s your favorite handmade gift? One you’ve given or received?

Leave me an idea (or link) in the comments about your favorite handmade gift and YOU CAN WIN a CARNATION’s Famous Fudge Kit, a LIBBY’S Pumpkin Bread Kit and a $25 gift certificate to Jo-Ann Stores for craft supplies. Hello! How fun is that?!

12 days till Christmas!

source: mukumbura

If you’ve been around here long you know I love me a good party. In fact, Lydia’s birthday party is less than a month away and I’ve got it all figured out. In fact, I woke up in the middle of the night thinking about it and had to get it up to write all my ideas down before I could fall asleep!

I get lots of comments and questions about how to plan parties and what’s the best stuff to do. So, I thought I’d give some of my best tips about party-planning. Then as I started to write them down, they didn’t seem that interesting. So instead, I’m going to make up 2 parties for you. And if you’ve got a Christmas party coming up, you can steal all these ideas and pretend they are yours!

Ready?

The Silver & Gold Peace on Earth Party

I got this idea from Plum Party. It is the cutest website full of printable tablescapes. I adore tablescapes and printable ones? SO COOL.  This tablescape includes a billion cute things like place cards, drink markers and menus. Plus some really cool extras like an advent calendar and a wreath. Yeah, like a PRINTABLE wreath. Look how awesome this is:

christmas

If that doesn’t inspire you to throw a party, I don’t know what will! I’d decorate with all the printable stuff, find some gold and silver candles and candlesticks (or make some myself) and make sure I had lots of twinkly lights stuck everywhere!

Then I’d probably do white food like my Snowflake Party…Cheeseball from Heaven, white chocolate fondue, wraps or sandwiches and maybe even some kind of cheesy dip (like an artichoke dip, maybe?). YUM. I’d definitely make my favorite stand-by punch: 1 thing (yes, that is a precise measurement) of apple juice, 1 Sprite or Ginger Ale and 1 frozen lemonade. It’s nice and gold and delicious.

Now, for a few activities. Hmmm…I don’t always like games for adults. (Can anyone say baby shower games?!) But I do think it’s fun to have some great ice-breaker stuff around. Once we did a go-at-your-own-pace scavenger hunt to locate all my mom’s collectible nativity scenes. You could do the same thing with different ornaments or decor in your house—just hand out a piece of paper with clues when people walk in. Then award a prize for everyone who finishes!

Then I’d send everyone home with a sparkly gold candle with a tag that says, “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. Isaiah 9:2″. Or maybe “Thanks for making our Christmas sparkly and bright!”

Oooh, I’m so excited I want to do that now!

Kids’ Toy Party

The second party I’d love to do is some kind of kids’ party. Last year I did a Gingerbread Party with Lydia’s friends. I wanted to do an Operation Christmas Child party this year but couldn’t get it together in time for the packing week. Anyway, I love the idea of a Kids’ Toy Party.

Let’s see…first I’d decorate with white butcher paper (or brown paper, my fave) as table cloths. Then I’d spread out crayons (red and green, of course) so everyone could write Christmas greetings or draw their favorite Christmas pictures (I can draw some mean holly!) I’d put some old toys around–maybe some slinkies, vintage toys or some of my kids’ favorites.

Now the food has me stumped. You could do some typical kids’ food—pb&j cut into Christmas shapes, fruit and Christmas cookies. Or you could just do a red/green theme—red and green veggie kabobs, pizza fondue and lettuce wraps. Regardless, there would lots of fun desserts like those sleigh cookies I linked to the other day or those yummy pretzel-rolo-pecan turtles (& some other versions)  or Christmas cupcakes!

toy party

And activities? Well, you could make these fun homemade holiday napkins, play guess-that-toy-get-to-know-you game (write popular toys on nametags and when your guests arrive, put one on their back. They can ask yes and no questions to find out what their name tag says.) And as a thank-you-gift, I’d give everyone a peppermint-lollipop with a tag that says, “We’re MINT to be friends.” OK, maybe not, but aren’t those lollipops cute?!

So, whad’ya think? Do either of those sound fun? I think they do! I’m kinda bummed I’m not having a Christmas party now! What kind of party would you host? Or have you hosted in the past? Got a good idea to share? DO TELL! Leave me a comment about a fun Christmas party (or some other kinda party)–or even a link to a great party you’ve done and you’ll be entered to win a FABU Holiday Brunch package from Nestle–including a brunch menu, corresponding NESTLÉ products, and a $50 VISA gift card. Merry Christmas to you, huh?!

Southern Plate 24/7 Moms Oh Amanda SuperMom Central The Mommy-Files

This morning I ate the Cheeseball from Heaven {you want to make this, I promise} for breakfast. Yes, I did. For an afternoon snack I’m going to have Hello Dolly bars. And that, my friends is my favorite way to enjoy holiday foods. Yeah, I like them at a party or at Christmas dinner. But I love sneaking my favorite (and yearly) snacks during the day. It makes them feel magical. Am I the only one?

Our family doesn’t have tons of traditional Christmas recipes besides the two I mentioned above. I mean, my dad makes a mean version of Emeril’s corn. But besides that, we generally like all food. That’s probably why we don’t have anything traditional–we like to try new things and eat whatever Daddy likes to cook us!

The tradition Lydia wants to start this year is Christmas cookies. We have this cool Christms cookie jar and she is determined to fill it with actual cookies. I was looking through the Nestle Holiday Celebrations website and thought we could make some of these yummies:

Minty Mistletoe cookie

When we lived in Orlando, our church delivered cookies to all the first time visitors. (Tell me you wouldn’t wanna come back to our church after that?!) One of the cookies we delivered was homemade by one of our members—it was like a giant sugar cookie with an Ande’s candy inside. OH. MY. YUM. I have never ever found a cookie that has equaled it. But this one might do as a good substitute.

I also like cute little sleigh idea. Lydia and Asa would tear them apart of course, but it would be fun to make at first! And actually, now that I think about it–fun to tear apart!

But the one I really want to do is this Very Merry Cookie Wreath. Because first of all–if you use those break-and-bake cookies I think it would take like 10 minutes. I think I might make this for the Sisterchick Christmas Party! (What do you think, girls?)

What’s your favorite Christmas recipe? Do you have a traditional family food? Share it in the comments (or even a link to it on your blog) and you’ll be entered to WIN a baking package from Nestle including a VIP coupon/product for CARNATION Evaporated Milk, TOLL HOUSE Morsels, Refrigerated Cookie Dough and a $25 Visa gift card for other baking supplies. Hello! I hear a cookie party in the works!

I love all the comments on the Family Tradition giveaway—if you haven’t entered, what are you waiting for? I’m leaving it open till Saturday!

A Holiday Exchange: Giveaway!

December 6, 2010 christmas

My Favorite Christmas Tradition When I was in middle school, my mom gave my brother and me a miniature Christmas tree. Every year we were given one ornament to put on the tree. The idea was that when we went to college or moved out we’d have our own tree full of ornaments and Christmas [...]
