Compassion International is hosting another blogging trip this week. Four bloggers are leaving for Guatemala today. I can imagine their trepidation and excitement because I felt the exact same way on my trip to the Dominican Republic with World Vision.

Today I want to encourage you to follow the bloggers on this trip. It’s not about Compassion or World Vision (both organizations are amazing tools for advancing God’s kingdom and I give money to both of them monthly) or another child sponsorship organization. It’s not about taking your money. It’s not about blogging. It’s about taking YOU out of YOUR WORLD and realizing their is MORE to life than YOU. It’s about realizing God’s big plans for ALL His people. It’s about getting INVOLVED with Him. And leading you to pray, as Bob Pierce prayed, “Let my heart be broken by the things that break the heart of God.”

So, I’m going to give you 10 links today. And I know doing a link post on Tuesday is kinda counterproductive because I really want you to click the links of the other Top Ten {Tuesday} participants. And when you read one post of ten links, it’s really like reading 10 posts. But. I’m gonna do it anyway.

Here are 10 posts from my trip to the Dominican Republic with World Vision, other Compassion blogging trips and important links to help you get involved. Please click and read. Or bookmark this page so you can come back to it at a quiet time today. Sit down, read and listen.

1. Is Child Sponsorship Worth It? My favorite post from my Dominican trip. It’s the story of John Robert. The best part is that John Robert himself left a comment for me. You must read this.

2. Maria. Jesus’ Light in the Slums by Jessica at The Mom Creative. The most affecting moment of our trip in the Dominican. A beautiful post.

3. A Meeting Ten Years in the Making by Jill at The Diaper Diaries. This is what child sponsorship does–to sponsors.

4. Kristen’s Trip to Africa. This is a link to all her posts. Click any of them–it doesn’t matter which one. They will all touch you.

5. Poverty Statistics from The Hole in Our Gospel by Richard Stearns, President of World Vision USA.

**Oh! Oh! You MUST buy this book! You will never be the same!**

6. Sohie (aka BooMama) and Shannon from Rocks In My Dryer went to Uganda with Compassion. It was the first bloggy-missions-trip thing I’d ever seen. And I read hungrily. I said, “This is my dream job. This is what I want to do when I grow up.” Read their stories: To Africa with Compassion by Sophie and My Africa Story by Shannon.

7. Less Charity, More Justice an interview with Sara Groves. I’ve documented how Sara Groves has impacted my worldview, too. This article briefly describes her journey and the organization she partners with to sponsor kids. (And Sara Groves’ blog is worth a read, too!)

8. A Father to the Fatherless by Brad Ruggles. I just glanced at this post again while linking it here and began to cry. Please read this.

10. Please follow the journey of the Compassion Bloggers to Guatemala. Read up on Compassion and World Vision. It was like a Science textbook. I don’t even know what inspired me to pick it up or finish it for that matter. But I was mesmerized by it. I read every word and the first thing I did when it was done was go through my kitchen and pile up everything that Dr. Weil considered unhealthy. This was the first time I got interested in healthy eating.

A few years later when I still liked Oprah, I started getting into Dr. Oz and his whole health-food philosophy. I loved his simple list of 5 ingredients that should not be in food and other little healthy habits he encourages.

With a few blogs and other books thrown in, I’ve been on a slow journey to eating better food…whole food…real food…clean food…slow food. This will probably be my only educational food post ever, so pay attention. Here’s the

Top Ten Steps I’ve Taken To Better Eating:

1. Whole Grains

For almost the last year I’ve been buying bread from a local bakery. Not just any old bakery, though. This bakery is called REAL BREAD. And why? Because they freshly mill their grain minutes or hours before they bake their bread. They teach that wheat loses it’s nutritional value within hours. So, freshly milled wheat is actually the ONLY “whole grain” that’s even good for you. The whole wheat flour you buy in the grocery store? Dead. As dead as that unrefrigerated grape juice on aisle 3.

Read more at Bread Beckers. It will rock your bread world.

2. Full Fat Dairy

Americans are crazy in love with low fat. I know, some of us spout that we still like the “good fats” in eggs and avocados. But we still limit them because we want to be skinny. But let’s think about milk for a minute–does it seem like a good idea to take a complete food like cow’s milk (it is a complete food–it’s designed to keep baby cows alive!) and strip it down? Oh, but they’re just taking out the fat, you say. Is that so? Maybe the fat is what makes milk do it’s job. Don’t fats, proteins, minerals and vitamins work in a beautiful symbiosis? Low fat dairy is a scam. Full fat milk is WHOLE milk–as in a whole, real food. Drink it and then rejoice when you watch your full fat cheese actually melt on your cheese toast!

Read more about Full Fat Dairy at Kitchen Stewardship.

4. Raw Milk

Speaking of milk, after you pick up your WHOLE milk, you might want to check out the rest of that label. Does it say pasteurized? Ultra-pasteurized? UHT? Do you know what any of that means? Basically, in order to ship milk to far away places, milk has to be heated. To kill anything that might spoil on the way over. Of course, this kills other stuff, too. LIKE EVERYTHING HEALTHY. Ultra-pasteurized (UHT) has been heated on such high temperatures that it doesn’t even need to be refrigerated. Case in point: Horizon Organic Chocolate Milk. It says it right there on the website & the front of the package. And if you read the labels of your big gallon jugs at the grocery store? They’re all Ultra-pasteurized, too.

I found only one organic, simply pasteurized milk at my local grocery store. So, I googled “raw milk” in my area. That means milk straight from a cow (*gasp*). I found a local farmer that delivers to my aforementioned bakery weekly. The only problem is he labels his milk “for pet consumption only” because selling milk straight from cows to people is illegal. Are you kidding me?!

Read Top Ten Reasons to Drink Raw Milk at Cheeseslave {how could I NOT link to that Top Ten post?!}

5. Pastured Eggs

When Les and I got married we were still in college–at a little school in North Georgia. We lived in a trailer out in a field right next to a chicken farm. And about once or twice a week I’d have to drive behind a big chicken truck. I’d see thousands of chickens stuffed into cages probably a foot high. Feathers were flying, their heads were drooping and I could NOT look at them. I remember in the summer, I didn’t have air conditioning in the car and I’d choose to roll up the windows so I couldn’t hear the chickens or see their feathers flying by me. It was inhumane–inchickenane—whatever, it was gross.

And now that I know a little more about cage-free, pastured, free-range chickens, I realize what the problem was. Those caged chickens? NOT HEALTHY. So, how in the world are they going to give me healthy eggs? They aren’t!

I have found several places that sell local, pastured eggs (and lots of individuals who just have a couple of hens in their backyards). Those multi-colored eggs above? Straight from chickens in my county!

6. Pastured & Grass Fed Animals

This is the same as above. Healthy animals=healthy food. If cows are eating “cow feed” instead of actual food intended for cows (ie. grass) and pigs are eating “piggie chow” and chickens are eating “chicken chow” instead of actual pig and chicken food, then they are not going to be healthy. And it won’t be healthy for us to eat. It’s as simple as that.

Becky and I cow-pooled this year so we could stock our freezer with grass-fed meat from a pastured cow. I’ve found several local farms that let their pigs and chickens run wild to forage and eat naturally. These are the animals I’m buying now.

Read more at US Wellness Meats.

7. Local Fruits & Vegetables

According to Steven Hopp, if Americans ate just one locally grown meal a week it would cut down on 1.1 million barrels of oil each week! Yeah, oil. You know that stuff that everyone in the free world is always fighting over? Drill now? Drill here? Drill there? Who cares?! EAT LOCAL.

Not only does local food cut down on fuel usage, it also supports your neighbors! Buying food at a local’s farmer’s market is keeping your money in your community. Finding a local CSA to provide you with veggies is helping a neighborhood farm make it!

And it keeps your fruits and veggies healthy, too. Think about how fresh an apple from Bolivia is. Not so much. But what about an apple picked an hour up the road? Probably bursting with just a few more vitamins, dontcha’ think?

For more information on eating local read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Lifeby Barbara Kingsolver

8. Honey

God and bees make honey. Raw honey is a complete natural sweetener. It never goes bad. It has pollen from your area–which means it can actually help with your allergies by setting up immunities in your body.

My sister-in-law told me her grandmother always said the reason she lived so long is because she ate a tablespoon of honey everyday. Even if it’s not true, what a yummy way to go!

Read more about Cinnamon and Raw Honey and Dark Chocolate at Kitchen Stewardship.

9. Organic

This is one of those over-used terms that no longer means as much as it used to. Organic does not equal healthy. Organic means that it is raised without certain pesticides and is not genetically modified. Oh, there’s so much to say here. And so much I don’t understand yet. Genetically modified fruits and veggies is new to me. Genetic food engineers have found a way to take genes from ANIMALS and MINERALS and put them into plants so they can have thicker skin, respond better to certain pesticides and make them unable to reproduce. It might be great for shipment and money–but can it really be good for us?

Read more about Natural and Organic at Gknkowflgins and Learn the Lingo at Eat Local Philly.

10. Self-Control

This is the one thing I haven’t figured out yet. I don’t usually buy anything junky to keep in the house. But if it’s in here (like when my husband goes to the grocery store late at night and comes back with Ben and Jerry’s Peanut Butter Cup ice cream?) I simply can’t turn it down. And when I’m given the choice to stop at a restaurant or go home and cook a full meal? Well, I can hardly pass up a chance to have someone cook for me!

How do I get wrap my mind around all this food-knowledge when I have junk food at my fingertips?!

10. Knowledge

I’m big on getting information. If you were here in January you know I didn’t make New Years Resolutions. I just made choices to get more informed on certain subjects. And this is the result of that knowledge quest. Along with all the blogs, books and sites I linked to earlier, here are some other great resources for learning about real food:

Local Harvest {My fave! I have found so many great farmers here!}

Whole Food Resources from Musings of a Housewife {lots of links to blogs, books and more!}

Eat Wild {more lists of local farms!}

Slow Food {a grassroots movement to take the world back from fast food!}

And a really good resource that I want to do is Kelly the Kitchen Kop’s Real Food for Rookies! It’s a 12-week online class that starts September 13. It’s $10 a class and is full of basic, easy, rookie steps for you to take (and now understand!) to get your family’s food going in a healthy direction! {And if you scroll all the way to the bottom of Real Food for Rookies page, you’ll see a quote from moi!}

What’s your food manifesto?

Disclaimer: I hope you can tell from this post that I do not claim to be an expert. I purposely did not give many statistics or facts because I am not a researcher or a nutritionist. I am a concerned human. Do not take anything I wrote as the gospel truth. Read through the links (also, cannot vouch for their reliability) and make your own informed decision.

{Yes, you can follow me on tumblr, but it’s really not THAT interesting because I generally share all the same posts on My New Favorite posts or fyi@iyk posts!}

Yes, I know there are better bookmarking sites (delicious.com, etc.) but for me, Tumblr works.

Some good Tumblrs: Mandi Ehman, 1+1+1=1 and Jessica Now

2. Share the Love

Regardless of what social media site you are on (a blog, twitter, tumblr or facebook) PLEASE let others know about a good site or post. Specifically:

When I see an update from a blog on my Facebook and I know it’s a post they’d love others to read–or its a giveaway or something they just poured their heart into, I LIKE it. Why? It makes all MY friends see it. So, my friends may not LIKE this blog, but they’ll still see it on MY updates. Which leads to clicks for that blog. And happiness all around.

On twitter a retweet (RT) is the same. When someone tweets something interesting, just RT it! It takes .14 seconds and it’s introducing all of your followers to this person’s site!

On a blog (hint, hint) most people have a slew of buttons on the bottom of each post. Like so:

These are little bookmarks to all your favorite sites–facebook, twitter, stumbleupon and more. If you read something good–click one of those buttons and share it on your favorite network.

When you do this you are creating another live link to their site. You are showcasing it to your entire social network. And who knows what it might do for their traffic, their readership or even their happiness!

3. Skype

I know I’ve mentioned Skype a few times before. Skype is a program you have to download. Once it’s downloaded you can talk for free via your computer. You can literally dial into someone’s phone (even via your iPhone) or {my preferred way} is to old skool chat in a chatroom. You can easily chat with just one person or several. You can create private chat rooms and even if the rest of your chatters aren’t there, you can type and they’ll see it the next time they log on.

Skype makes nailing down details of an event easy. It’s great for bouncing off an idea on someone. And it’s super duper fun.

4. Stars on Google Reader

I am still a newbie on Google Reader. I know I promised a few weeks (months?) ago that I’d figure it out. But really, that’s like 8,353rd on my list. But my one new favorite thing about Google Reader is the STAR option. When I am scrolling through my feed reader and come across a post I like I STAR it.

This essentially bookmarks it and then I can click STARRED ITEMS to see everything I’ve ever starred. It’s a lovely way to save posts that I want to comment on or share with you.

5. Affiliates for e-books

If you have a blog and want to make a little cashola, try searching out some affiliate programs. And not on Land of Nod and Robeez. I’m talking about e-book affiliates. Normal every day bloggers have produced some fantastico e-books and have set up affiliate programs for YOU to make some cash off of them.

For example, I am an affiliate on Kitchen Stewardship’s Healthy Snacks To Go e-book. The thing only costs $6.95. But I get a percentage of that $6.95 if you buy it via a link on MY site. So far, I’ve made more money from that $6.95 ebook than from any other affiliate program I’m involved in–except Amazon.

And becoming an affiliate is usually as easy as plopping in your email address. They aren’t too choosy because you are making them money!

6. Facebook as Phone Book/Google

I don’t really use Facebook to snoop on people and update others on my life. I use it as a personalized search engine. If I need to contact someone (even someone that is not my friend) I can usually find them in three keystrokes on facebook. If I need to find directions, coupons or hours for a store, restaurant or event, I can find that on facebook. If it’s a nation-wide chain, I can even find the local company’s page and can find any info I need in just a click or two.

Whenever I find a small store or cute place I want to remember (but know I never will), I find them on facebook. They’ll update every once in awhile and I’ll remember to go check them out or buy whatever I needed to buy. Definitely my favorite way to use Facebook!

7. Groupon

If you are not Grouponing you are missing out. Groupon is the local-coupon-extravaganza that emails you with daily local deals that are discounted to a ridiculously awesome price. Oh. I just realized I posted about Groupon a few weeks ago. Well, the good news is other companies are jumping on the Groupon band wagon. Today I got FOUR different emails from similar companies {and coincidentally, every single one was about a spa!}

So, if you’d like some good local deals, earn a little bit of cash (or coupon credit) and a great place to score gifts {that’s my favorite use of Groupon} you need to check out Groupon, Mampedia Sweet Deals, Tippr and Living Social to see if they are in your area. And if they are and you sign up via the above links, then I’ll get some credit or somethin’. So. Go forth.

8. Firefox Add-ons

First of all. DOWNLOAD FIREFOX. UNINSTALL INTERNET EXPLORER. Then. I’ve told you about the two greatest Firefox add-ons: Great Reader and Easy Comment. But I’ve found two new ones that I’m playing with right now, too: Morning Coffee {pulls up your favorite sites when you open a window} and Leech-Block {blocks sites that you can’t keep yourself away from…ahem…twitter}.

There are tons of add-ons that can enhance (or clutter up, of course) your Firefox experience. It’s kinda fun searching through all of them.

9. Make Your Readers Happy and Make A Blogger Happy {some bloggy tips from Yours Truly}

10. What site do you use that makes your life easier? Or more fun? Please share in the comments!

Here it is–the post you’ve all been waiting for. I am finally coming clean on yesterday’s Top Ten {Tuesday} post. Here are the ACTUAL WEIRD THINGS THAT HAPPENED TO ME THIS WEEK:

1. Made a date with my aunt to CAN TOMATOES.

It’s hard to believe but yes, my aunt and I are going to can tomatoes. Well, if any ever grow on our tomato plants. We were talking about Animal, Vegetable, Miracle and somehow got onto canning. She said she and her friend have done some canning. So, I told her I want her to teach me. There you go: TRUTH.

2. Stepped on a BINDER CLIP at the pool and sliced the bottom of my foot open.

We didn’t realize Asa didn’t have any swim diapers until I had already slathered him with sunblock. Les ran to the store and when he came back with Tigger & Pooh swim diapers (instead of the Dora ones poor Asa had been using before), I began to wrestle Asa into the diaper. He was totally distraught because he thought I was taking his suit OFF. I had to move over to one of the long lounge chairs and next thing I know I step on a binder clip. (Who brings a binder clip to the pool?!) I now have a cowboy hat-shaped chunk out of the bottom of my foot and it hurts like the dickens. TRUTH.

3. Went swimming with FOUR GUYS I WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL with.

My sisterchick, Mandi married a guy from my High School homeroom. He also went to my church but I met him at school first. We didn’t have the same friends in High School but like me, he’s kept the same friends since then. So, when Mandi throws a party for her kids, guess who shows up? His friends. So, this weekend, the only guests in attendance at the birthday party were me, some family friends and 4 guys I went to High School with. When you’re in High School you never think you’re going to be at a pool party watching these guys swim with their kids or lounge by the pool with their wife. It’s quite the perspective. So. TRUTH.

4. Led ONE HUNDRED 4 YEAR OLDS in singing.

Every Sunday my husband and I lead 7 classrooms of 4 year olds in singing songs at church. I had 27 kids in 2 of my classes. But let’s just say there were 20 in each. That’s actually 140 4 year olds. It’s loud. But very fun. TRUTH.

5. Cooked dinner for nine of my IN-LAWS.

My sister-in-law was in town from Mexico along with her husband and three kids. My other sister-in-law, her boyfriend, my mother-in-law and my husband’s BFF came over. That’s technically 7 legal in-laws, 1 almost-in-law and one friend on my husband’s side. So, I’m going with TRUTH.

6. Missed a meeting because my husband took my kids AND MY CELL PHONE AND CAR KEYS out to dinner.

Ridiculous. Frustrating. This is TRUTH.

7. Discovered ON FACEBOOK that my cousin got married this week.

She was originally going to be engaged for 3 years. But obviously, that’s way too long. So, she and her fiance decided to just get married. They live in California and I guess it was a last minute thing. She was gorgeous. Stunning. That’s just how my family rolls. TRUTH.

8. Accidentally stabbed myself with 2 bamboo skewers. IN MY ELBOW.

I have a whole jar of bamboo skewers left over from my fruit kabobs. I was reaching up to put something on a top shelf. When I brought my arm down, I went right into the skewers, knocking them over. Except for 2 skewers that stuck straight into my elbow! They were hanging out of my arm and I had to PULL THEM OUT. I was bleeding out of two little holes like I had been struck by a snake. It still hurts. Shockingly, this is TRUTH.

9. Ran TWO MILES without stopping.

I can’t believe how many of you suggested that this one was false. You know I’ve been walking every day for months now. How do you know I haven’t been wunning? Or even jogging? I may have just gotten a crazy hair one day to run my whole route and then fall breathless back into the bed. Mandi and Amy were brutal in their lack of faith. Teri must be a lawyer because she agreed with them and even used my own blog against me! Alas. You were right. I’m not a runner. This statement is FALSE.

10. Figured out the amazingness that is POKE on Facebook.

A few weeks ago Staci and Becky and I were wondering what POKE was. So, I told Staci I’d POKE her to see what happened. And it was lame. A tiny notification on my facebook wall said, “Staci poked you. Poke back?”. So, I did. Then she did. Then I did. Then she did. Then Becky did. Then I did. Then Staci did. Then Becky did. Then…well, it just gets out of hand. It’s almost impossible to dismiss the POKE without POKE-ing back. I have no idea what it means, why it’s interesting or why the heck Facebook still has it on there. Here’s a conversation we had about POKE:

In case you can’t tell we’re POKE-ing each other between comments. So. Truth? Well, it may have been an exaggeration. It’s not quite amazing in it’s awesomeness. But it is amazing in it’s total weirdness. {Also, since then I’ve had about 3 other people POKE me. They can’t stop the POKE.}

Thanks for playing my game. I was laughing so hard at the comments! You guys made Tuesday fun! Mwuah! (<—that was supposed to be a big kiss.)

Let’s play a little game, shall we? I’ll give you TEN things that have happened to me this week. ONE of them is a LIE. That’s right, pure FICTION. The rest of them are true. Originally, I was going to write a great description along with every sentence (basically, so you would believe me). But these are funnier on their own. So, READ. GUESS. And I’ll give you the answer tomorrow. And all my undying love and affection for whoever else thinks this is a funny list.

1. Made a date with my aunt to CAN TOMATOES.

2. Stepped on a BINDER CLIP at the pool and sliced the bottom of my foot open.

3. Went swimming with FOUR GUYS I WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL with.

4. Led ONE HUNDRED 4 YEAR OLDS in singing.

5. Cooked dinner for nine of my IN-LAWS.

6. Missed a meeting because my husband took my kids AND MY CELL PHONE AND CAR KEYS out to dinner.

7. Discovered ON FACEBOOK that my cousin got married this week.

8. Accidentally stabbed myself with 2 bamboo skewers. IN MY ELBOW.

9. Ran TWO MILES without stopping.

10. Figured out the amazingness that is POKE on Facebook.

So, what do you think? Which ones really happened? Which one is the lie?

**update: read my update post to see which one is actually a lie!**
