We went to the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta to see the theatrical version of Disney’s Mulan. And can I just say that it was like every single thing I loved all wrapped up into one?

Family time? CHECK. Theatre? CHECK. Musical Theatre? CHECK. Puppetry? CHECK! Cool Kids’ Activities? CHECK. Disney? CHECK.

The Alliance Theatre is one of my favorite places in Atlanta anyway. It’s part of the Woodruff Arts Center and it just feels metropolitan and swanky and Atlanta-ish. I love it. It’s a cozy theatre that doesn’t have a bad seat.

Our seats were row A. We walked straight down to the first row and felt a little stupid because we could not locate seat 130. We walked up and down the front row at least 3 times. And the whole time all I could think was, “Oh my goodness, we’re going to sit on the front row with a 1 and 4 year old. A 4 year old who hates loud noises, surprises and scary costumes.” Finally we realized our seats were row A on the BALCONY. Oops. But much better for our little girl who needs to be eased into new adventures.

However, I did not need to worry about the scariness. Every scary part was handled with such creativity! Let’s rewind a bit…in case you don’t know Mulan is the story of a Chinese girl who poses as a man to join the army and fight for the emperor. Mulan’s anscestors play a big role…but how do you show ghostly figures in a play?

How ’bout by using puppets?! The actors had huge backpack puppets that waved and glided above their heads while they spoke and manipulated the arms. I love this type of puppetry and love seeing it in theatre.

Each of the actors (except Mulan) played at least one other part. In fact, the entire show was done with just eight actors! EIGHT! They were are all very funny and great at jumping from character to character. Lydia’s favorite was Mushu and Mulan, of course. Because Mulan is basically a princess. And princesses are always a fave.

The show had some original songs in it that don’t appear in the movie. And they had to change some of the story line to make it work on stage. But I think it really added to the story. There was a whole male-female-yin-yang thing that really worked. And that’s not even my thing—but it kind of fleshed the story out even more.

It was a 70 minute show with no intermission but Lydia and Asa were mesmerized. (OK, I had to give Asa some pretzel sticks and a cup of milk to keep him quiet.) We laughed and I may have even had a tear in my eye when Mulan’s dad said, “The greatest honor is having you as a daughter.”

Then the best part came afterwards–since it was the opening day they had a huge Chinese celebration in the lobby. We got a passport and then had it stamped at every station. The Center for Puppetry Arts helped us make a shadow puppet dragon. The Atlanta Zoo let us pet a snake. The Atlanta Symphony let the kids try out any instrument they wanted. They had fan dancers, sword fighting demonstrations, face painting, animal balloons, actor autographs and more. We had an absolute blast. It made the story come even more alive for Lydia. And it totally made me want to have a Mulan birthday party!

mulan alliance theatre

If you are in Atlanta, you will want to take your kids to see Mulan. It’s a great story, told with such creativity and being at the Alliance Theatre will make it an adventure in itself!

Disclosure: Complimentary tickets were given for the sake of reviewing the play.

atlanta zing zang zoom

Did you hear about the Ringling Brothers Circus zebra that took a walk down the streets of downtown Atlanta yesterday? No, that wasn’t a lead in to a joke. Apparently he escaped from the circus and the police had to chase him down! Wouldn’t you have loved to be the one who called that in?

We actually got to see that zebra when we went to the Ringling Bros’ Zing Zang Zoom show in Atlanta last Saturday with Mandi and her family (read her circus recap to see a good pic!). We ended up having complete nosebleed seats (really we were in Row J on the 3rd level) but even still we could see everything—including the holding area for when the animals were about to come on stage. Our kids would see the animals and start pointing and shouting (or signing in Asa’s case) “ELEPHANT! ELEPHANT! LOOK, MOMMY! ZEEEBRAS!”

The animals (including the zebras) were definitely a high point for the kids (and for me, too!) The elephants are majestic, the zebras are breathtaking (how creative is God on that one?!), the dogs were hilarious and the tigers were frightening and beautiful at the same time! I have to admit (especially after seeing the zebra run down the highway) that zebras aren’t the smartest animals in the circus. Apparently zebras are un-tamable. So anything the trainers can make them do is a miracle. The rest of the animals were jumping over hurdles, standing on their heads and growling on demand at their trainers. The zebras were just running in a circle. But hey–it was still entertaining!

This menagerie isn’t even including the women getting shot out of a cannon, the acrobats, the hanging-upside-down couple, the magicians AND the clowns! The circus has come a long way, baby. If you haven’t been you should definitely check out Ringling Bros circus website and see when they are coming to your town.

They will only be in Atlanta for THREE MORE DAYS! So, that was really the whole point of this post (I kinda got carried away by the zebra)…I’ve got a coupon code for Zing Zang Zoom: use MOM to get $44 for a 4 pack of tickets Monday through Friday or $4 off Friday night & Weekend shows! It was well worth it—even with the zebras!

I am a Family Field Activator for the circus. We received three free tickets to the show in Atlanta. I am not required to blog about this. I was only asked to share the coupon code with my community—and my blog is one communities. I registered to become a Family Field Activator through Mom Central. You can do it, too!

HARRY CONNICK JR: YOUR SONGS *a giveaway*

by oh amanda on October 20, 2009

Did I ever tell you about the time I met Harry Connick, Jr.? Yeah, well, it’s because it hasn’t happened. YET. I have a long time crush on Harry and his music. I can’t remember the first time I heard one of his songs but I do remember the first time I ever saw him…

My husband surprised me with tickets to Harry’s Come By Me Tour. We are big conert go-ers. Well, in college we were big concert go-ers. And most of those concerts were for indie bands that no one had ever heard of and were driving around in a 15 passenger van and getting excited because there were more than 50 people at the show.

So, when we got to Harry’s show, it was a little different. They were serving wine. No one was pushing their way to the front. I didn’t see any band shirts or tattoos. Everyone was just sitting in their seat quietly talking and sipping their wine.

I, on the ther hand, was sneaking a peak at my neighbor’s program. You know, the giant full color book composed strictly of Harry’s face? Yeah. The girl finally said, “Uhm. Would you like to look at it?” *blush*

The concert started and I’m pretty sure I never moved. Except for that one time that Harry said, “Hey, you guys are far away. I know you all paid different prices to sit where you are, but does anyone care? Come on down to the front!” All the single girls (including my neighbor) ran down to the front. She asked me if I wanted to go, too. I almost did, then remembered I was with my husband. You know, dance with the one who brung ya.

When the show was over my husband (the music snob) said, “Harry has more talent in his little finger than all the bands I listen to combined!” And it’s true. Harry is a writer, composer, singer, pianist, arranger—musician! And he ain’t hard on the eyes either. Just sayin’.

I think I own all of Harry’s CDs. I especially love Songs I Heard (perfect for baby showers, by the way) and When My Heart Finds Christmas. His new album, Your Songs just came out last week and it is divine! I got a preview copy from One2One Network (another great company that anyone can hook up with—they just start buzz for companies and how could I not buzz about Harry?) and am excited to pass another copy on to you!

In case you haven’t heard (or seen—Harry was on Oprah and I missed it!), the album is Harry’s version of some very famous songs. I have to admit, I didn’t know a lot of the songs but here are a few of my new favorites:

Can’t Help Falling In Love With You by Elvis
They Long To Be Close To You by The Carpenters (oh, I think this one is my fave!)
Besame Mucho (wait till you hear Lydia sing this one. it’s a hoot!)
First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack
Your Song by Elton John

Not to mention about 12 more hits. The entire album is kinda slow (in a good way!) and not heavy on the big-band/jazzy thing I like best. But hello, it’s Harry! He could sing the phonebook and I’d buy the album.

So, wanna win a CD? Or know someone who might like it? It would make a great Christmas gift! If you’d like to win your very own YOUR SONGS cd just leave me a comment below telling me your favorite Harry song, cd or story.

Remember my TJMaxx Spendervention Challenge? I was given a $25 giftcard to TJMaxx and a $25 giftcard to Marshall’s. I gave the Marshall’s card to my husband. Then I challenged him to save more money than me. If you remember I saved between $78 and $102. THAT IS PRETTY STINKIN’ GOOD.

My husband is a better shopper than me, so I was hoping I had done good enough to beat him. Well, after I gave him the ultimatum of using the giftcard or I was giving it away on my blog, he finally headed over to Marshall’s. (Stinks for yall, huh?)

So, this is what he got:

First up is a sweet pair of O’Neill shorts. These look really slick and still have the original price tag of $49.50! And Les did pretty good because he got these for $15!

Les is into surfer brands. So, when he saw this Ezekiel shirt he knew $9.99 was a score. But too bad for Les, this must have been one of Ezekiel’s least popular shirts. It was only $18.99. What’s that? A savings of 47%? HA!

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the final amounts:

TOTAL RETAIL PRICE: $69
TOTAL SPENT: $25
TOTAL SAVED: $44*

WHICH MAKES ME THE WINNER by a good $30! Thank you! Thank you!

Now, to decide what my prize should be….

*ps: if my math is wrong, I don’t wanna know…

JumpStart! (*a giveaway*)

by oh amanda on July 9, 2009

I’ve been wanting to teach Lydia to read. I know, she’s only 3 years old. But she loves books! She knows her letters and sounds (mostly), she even knows the alphabet in sign-language. Actually, I think she recognizes the signs quicker than the written letters! (Thank you, Signing Time!)

So, I randomly picked up a Strawberry Shortcake phonics book I found at TJMaxx. (Seriously, I did. This isn’t a commercial.) Lydia LOVES it. The first time we looked at it she wanted to do it for like an hour. She also has a Kumon book that my aunt gave her at Christmas. I had to tear it out of her hands yesterday. She wanted to do every single page at once. And it’s only a coloring/pencil-holding book!

I’ve been thinking about buying some other kind of workbook things to help her with the next step in reading…uh, well, I don’t really know WHAT the next step is in reading, but I think she’d like it! So, a few weeks ago, JumpStart emailed me to try out their new website for kids. I was totally excited because I wanted to see their approach and ideas for teaching kids Lydia’s age.

So, we tried it out. First of all, Lydia LOVES computer games. We are on Playhouse Disney, PBSkids and Starfall all the time. I’m kind of in the camp that yeah, I don’t want Lydia to be addicted to tvs and computers—but at the same time, this is our world. She needs to know how to use a computer. Why not use the computer to learn to read?

So, here’s our JumpStart adventure:

First I had an install problem. Well, really it was just a browser problem. Aparently JumpStart doesn’t like Firefox. *gasp* So, I powered up Safari and it worked right away. The first thing Lydia got to do was make her own character. Her character is dressed in pink with a pink flower in her hair. And her name? Lily Azul Noodle. Awesome, right? It was all very SecondLife-ish.

Before Lily Azul got to play any games, Frankie the JumpStart dog gave us complete and total details about what to do and where to go. Seriously, he was a great tour guide. He showed us a giant map which included Adventure Land, Story Land, an arcade and even a movie house.

picture-12

Well, apparently Lydia and I didn’t listen to ol’ Frankie because we ended up at the arcade. Which was entirely too hard for me Lydia. We wandered around a few more worlds and were unsuccessful in doing anything remotely like fun. I think it has to do with the fact that I have not been able to maneuver an actual video game since my original Nintendo in 6th grade. All of JumpStart-world is 3D. So Lily Azul can move everywhere. Just the moving in and out of the lands was a game to Lydia. And a workout to me! We really had to do this part together. It was hard for her to understand how to move the character around.

We finally stumbled into StoryLand which is deesigned just for kids 3-5 years old. And this is where it got fun. Our first stop was at the Pet Shop. Lydia got to choose her own pet. She picked a kitty named Princess. (Suprised?) Then Princess followed her…I mean, Lily Azul around the world. They found a field where they could play ball. And suddenly, Princess looked a little dirty. And indeed she was! So, Lydia took her to the Pet Wash. Here she got to pick special soap and brushes to fix up her kitty.

I think we stayed in the pet wash for about thirty minutes. Lydia used every single kind of shampoo. She tried all the brushes. Then it was time to eat at the Pet Restaruant. Princess got to try all kinds of food…but if it wasn’t kitty food, she wouldn’t eat it. So, Lydia had to figure out what kind of food a kitty would like.

picture-14

This was more the kind of games in StoryLand. It wasn’t the ABC-reading stuff I was hoping. It was more problem solving, decision making. But if Lydia’s response to the games was any indication…the JumpStart people probably know a little more about kids’ learning styles than I do! In fact, according to the website, the skills being taught are based on National Education Standards which means it lines up exactly with what is being taught in schools. Cool, huh?

Every single day for a week, when Lydia would get up from her nap she’d say, “Can I play my computer game?” And she’d go straight to the Pet Shop to get her pet. Then go through the pet wash-restaurant-ball games until I finally made her turn it off.

It is a fun place to play. I don’t think the actual games were any cooler than the other online games we play. But the whole world—with the 3d map and the ability to move from world to world is cool. JumpStart’s website also has a blog and forums for parents with fun activities and news about JumpStart. And if you’re an older kid and can actually move a 3D character around a 3D world, there is TONS of fun stuff to do. You can earn coins to buy special stuff for your avatar/character/thingie. The games are much more ABC-123 and seem really fun. The coolest part to me was that it seemed never-ending. It wasn’t like a little short 5 minute game. It was literally a WORLD to hang out in and do fun stuff!

JumpStart has generously offered a FREE three month subscription (which is like a $25 value) to the site for one of my beautiful readers! This wouldWould you and your kids like to try it out? TJMaxx Spendervention (Part 1)

by oh amanda on July 2, 2009

A few weeks ago the good people at TJMaxx and Marshalls asked if I would like to help them with their SPENDERVENTION push. They said they’d send me two giftcards to do a shopping experiment. UHM. Giftcard? TJMAXX? I’m there!

So, I decided to play a little game and have a contest with my husband. I gave him the Marshall’s giftcard and I took the TJMaxx giftcard. I told him he had to go shopping and buy something with his giftcard. I’d do the same. Then we’d compare and see who got the best deal.

Now, I’m all about TJMaxx. Don’t you remember their commercials from when we were kids (T-t-t-t-t-TJMaxx! The MAX for the minimum price! It’s never never the same place twice!)? I’ve snagged awesome deals at TJMaxx and Marshall’s. I think I’ve told you before my husband would rather go to one of these off-price retailers because you can get high quality clothing for the same price as going to Old Navy or Target.

TJMaxx is not an outlet–they don’t sell irregular stuff. They aren’t last-season’s cast-offs. They are opportunistic buyers that buy directly from the designers. They are on the prowl 40 weeks out of the year to find the best and biggest deals. And they pass it on to me us.

Now, let’s get back to my SPENDERVENTION. I had both kids with me. So. It’s very hard for me to shop for clothes. I just don’t have the patience to try on a pair of jeans with 2 kids hanging off me. So, I hit up some other departments: housewares and kids.

Would you like to see what I got for $25? (ok, I went over $25 a little…)

1. TOWELS. I couldn’t find these online to do an actual price comparison. BUT the Martha Stewart towels were $14 each. And even if these aren’t as nice as Martha’s (which I think they are…), the Kohl’s brand towels online were $6. These are waaaay cuter and are only THREE. And in case you were wondering these look perfect in Lydia’s hot pink bathroom.

Hand Towels $3 each

Hand Towels $3 each

2. TANK TOP. OK, so I found one thing for myself. I only have about 45 tank tops. But this one was too cute to pass up. Green with pink butterflies on it. The Guess tag is still on it and it says THIRTY-FOUR dollars. For a tank top. And I got it for $7. They are at least that at Target, don’t you think?

Guess Tank Top $7

Guess Tank Top $7

3. DVDs. This is the most random item of the day— Scholastic DVD Collection. I won a set of these from AlphaMom once and Lydia loves them. But when I saw this one with Chick Chicka Boom Boom on it, we had to get it! It was $13. At Amazon? $26. That’s half off, baby.

Scholastic DVDs $13

Scholastic DVDs $13

TOTAL SPENT: $29

TOTAL I WOULD HAVE SPENT IF I HAD SHOPPED RETAIL: $78-102

That is insane.

So, what do you think? Can my husband do better?

{Also, I’m linking this up to The Diaper Diaries’ Things I Love Thursday
becasue uhm…I like The Diaper Diaries and TJMaxx. A lot.}
