It’s been five weeks of my new little pirate. Five whole weeks of newborn diapers, sweet baby smiles, cuddly blankets, and tiny clothes. It’s also been five whole weeks of feedings every 3 hours, screaming fests and sleepless nights. As wonderful as a newborn is, it can also be the scariest most aggravating time of your life! This little bitty person is completely dependent on you and they can’t remotely tell you what it is they need or want! What a privilege–and a daunting task.

When my daughter was born (a whopping 2 and a half years ago) I wanted so much to be a <strike>perfect</strike> good mom. I wanted my daughter to sleep through the night, nurse like a champ, have a perfect temperament, do sign language and of course, be a genius. So, I read every baby book I could get my hands on.

One of my favorite books is The Moms On Call Guide to Basic Baby Care. This is an unbelievably helpful book written by two pediatric nurses who are also experienced moms. They were the nurses that sat by the phone and answered all the late night phone calls of frantic first time parents. So, they’ve heard it all! Their book covers everything from nail clipping to understanding your doctor to swaddling to GETTING YOUR CHILD TO SLEEP THROUGH THE NIGHT. It even comes with a dvd with some of the most helpful tutorials I’ve ever seen. (Like spreading a towel on the bouncy seat to hold your baby after their bath! GENIUS.)

Moms on Call has been featured on FOX News, ABC Family, Parents Magazine and tons of other sites and resources for parents. They have a newsletter that goes straight to your inbox full of helpful parenting tips, sicknesses that are going around and info on their parenting seminars, personal consulting and online courses.

And this is where the giveaway comes in! One of these fabu authors is actually one of my friends! (But I promise I’d love this stuff even if she weren’t!) And she has graciously offered to give YOU my fantastic readers the opportunity to win one of their online Baby or Toddler Seminars. These are online classes that cover things like:

Getting Your Baby To Sleep Through The Night

Specific Soothing Techniques That Work Immediately

Learn to Tackle Toddler Tantrums

Master Potty Training

and more!

You can see some video samples of these courses online at MomsOnCall.com. These courses are a $30-$60 value!!

Are you interested yet? Well, if you’d like to win one of these online seminars, just leave me a comment. Any comment will do, but I especially love comments like “OMG. I so need this!” or “How cool are you to give this away?!” or even “YOU ARE MY NEW FAVORITE BLOGGER IN THE WORLD.” If you’d like a second entry, leave me a comment letting me know you subscribed to my blog through your favorite feeder or via email. if you really really really want to win and would like a third entry, head over to MomsOnCall.com and subscribe to their newsletter.

I’ve got a pirate update and a couple of bloggy questions for you…

Three weeks have come and gone since the pirate has officially become a land blubber. (Do you ever wonder how long I’ll take these pirate puns? Me, too.) And just as I hoped I’m feeling more normal.

We’ve had decent feedings, good naps and even some fun wake-times. I’m ready for his one month appointment when they tell me how much of a chunk he is and that I’m doing a sensational job breastfeeding him.

And I even took a shower today. Not because we’re having company or going somewhere. Just so I’d be clean. Now, how’s that for three weeks post-partum?

And now for the questions…

1. Remember my VLOG? Yeah, the one where you get to w-a-t-c-h me talk about random randomness? Well, I’m stuck. Newbaby.com has asked me to post (vlost?) about things moms would be interested in. But I can’t think of anything. I certainly can’t show off my breastfeeding skills. I’m just not a mom-expert. What kind of things could I vlog about? Any questions? Anything I do that you’d like to know more about? (*snicker*) Any products you’d like me to try out for you? Seriously, any and every suggestion is welcome.

2. Remember Oh Ho Ho? Well, are you up for it again? I don’t think I could handle seven weeks of it. But maybe a month? What do you think? I’m waffling and need some input. (Since Halloween is a mere half a month away, I really need to get my Christmas plans nailed down. You understand, of course.)

OK, that’s all I’ve got right now. I’m working on a post for later today, though. And you’re gonna like it. It’s etsy-ish. My fave.

Happy Monday!

I call my parents Mama & Daddy. I’ve always called them that. I never graduated to Mom & Dad or Mother & Father. My brother is 28 (in a couple of days) and he calls my parents Mama & Daddy. (The only other people I know who do this are…uhm…well, when they say it, it sounds more like, “Mommah and Diddy.”)

It’s interesting because BOTH my parents call their parents Mama & Daddy, too. Obviously that’s why we do it, but the interesting thing is that my mom is from Minnesota and my dad is from Georgia. You’d think being from opposite sides of the country, they’d just do it differently.

Anyway, when Lydia was born, I wanted her to call me Mama. But every time I said it, it just sounded like MY mom. So, we did Mommy–sweet and cutesy, just like my little girl. I like being a “Mommy”.

But like everything else in this new two-year old land, she’s switching it up. She has begun experimenting with new names. She has called me Mama for about 3 days and yesterday suddenly started calling me Mom.

MOM.

I am not ready for MOM.

“Mom” evokes the eye-rolling teenager that yells, “M-oooo-oooom!” while slamming her bedroom door. My 2 year old MUST revert to Mommy or Mama as soon as possible. I’m feeling positively ancient!

What do you call your parents? What do your kids call you? What do your parents call their parents? I’m interested in knowing if it’s different in different places or from generation to generation.

my pirate & me at 37 weeks.

I had another sweet baby shower this week. Complete with a delicious pirate hat cake and a diaper treasure chest! We played a little guess-how-big-Amanda’s-belly game with ribbons. These little ribbons were the losers, thank goodness!

I’m feeling pretty tired and sore right now. Everything is swollen–my hands, my feet, my knees (is that possible?). And I’m feeling…inward. I’ve been reading Bradley’s childbirth book and he talks about one stage of labor where the mom suddenly turns inward and selfish (not in a bad way) to focus on her child. I kinda feel the same way right now. I’m not able to do much more than think about what needs to happen before my pirate arrives. Reading, blogging and even TV are basically out. Nothing can really hold my attention. (I actually marked all my blogs as read. ACK!)

So, the word “countdown” is very real. I know he could be late, but potentially he could be here any day. It’s very surreal. I’m treasuring my days with Lydia and my little family of 3. But also excitedly nervous about my new family of 4!

(btw, photography by Lydia. not bad, huh?)
