What NOT to Get Your Kids for Christmas

by oh amanda on November 19, 2008

I bought this great old book for Lydia at a consignment sale. It looked like some old books I had as a kid that were my mom’s as a kid. It’s hard for me to pass up any book much less an old book.

I was so excited because it was a collection of stories. And that usually means a few fairy tales, a true to life story and maybe some poems.  Plus, it’s called the BEST in Children’s Books. So, it’s go to have some classic stories in it, right?

One day at naptime I decided to give this book a go. I flipped through it, looking for the shortest story and found a poem. It had lots of pictures and looked fun. And it was. For about two stanzas. Then it started getting…gruesome.

It’s about an old lady who can’t get her pig to jump over a gate. She asks a dog to bite her pig and then asks a stick to beat the dog because the dog won’t bite the pig. This keeps going until she gets to a butcher. She asks a butcher to kill an ox. He won’t do it. So, she asks a rope to HANG THE BUTCHER!

blech.

Are you believing this?!

So, I’m changing the words around and skipping entire verses so I can see how it ends without scarring Lydia for life. At least no one obeys the old lady. Uh…until the last verse. Now, check out this illustration:

ew.

Is that the most morbid thing you’ve ever seen? *shudder* Who thought this was the BEST in Children’s literature?!

So, needless to say, we haven’t picked this book up again. And I probably won’t be buying Lydia any more old books for Christmas this year!

Mama Mom Mommy

by oh amanda on September 11, 2008

in kids,me,moms,motherhood

I call my parents Mama & Daddy. I’ve always called them that. I never graduated to Mom & Dad or Mother & Father. My brother is 28 (in a couple of days) and he calls my parents Mama & Daddy. (The only other people I know who do this are…uhm…well, when they say it, it sounds more like, “Mommah and Diddy.”)

It’s interesting because BOTH my parents call their parents Mama & Daddy, too. Obviously that’s why we do it, but the interesting thing is that my mom is from Minnesota and my dad is from Georgia. You’d think being from opposite sides of the country, they’d just do it differently.

Anyway, when Lydia was born, I wanted her to call me Mama. But every time I said it, it just sounded like MY mom. So, we did Mommy–sweet and cutesy, just like my little girl. I like being a “Mommy”.

But like everything else in this new two-year old land, she’s switching it up. She has begun experimenting with new names. She has called me Mama for about 3 days and yesterday suddenly started calling me Mom.

MOM.

I am not ready for MOM.

“Mom” evokes the eye-rolling teenager that yells, “M-oooo-oooom!” while slamming her bedroom door. My 2 year old MUST revert to Mommy or Mama as soon as possible. I’m feeling positively ancient!

What do you call your parents? What do your kids call you? What do your parents call their parents? I’m interested in knowing if it’s different in different places or from generation to generation.

Impress Your Kids With BOOKS!

by oh amanda on August 20, 2008

*keep reading, this is a giveaway!*

I told you about my new blog, Impress Your Kids. (It’s going swimmingly, thanks for asking. I got 30 whole hits yesterday!) The whole idea is that by using small everyday things you’d normally do, you can impress God’s Word on your kids. With a preschooler you can use crafts and music and of course, BOOKS!

I love finding new books that help me tell Lydia more about God. It just so happens that Random House sent me three books that do just that!

The first two are by Dandi Daley Mackall and illustrated by David Hohn. When Lydia saw these books, she was so excited. We immediately read the “toes book” and loved it! It’s a beautiful story about a little girl who wonders what God did when He created her. When God Created My Toes is a sweet story of God’s love and attention to even our teeny tiny parts! My favorite line?

“When God created my nose did He know I’d sneeze in a wintry breeze? Did we kiss like Eskimos when God created my nose?”

God Loves Me More Than That is about a little boy who wonders how much love God has for him. He basically goes through Romans 8:38-39 to see how big, soft, wide, loud and strong God’s love is.

The pictures are modern and captivating. The story is all in rhyme. And enough humor in it to make Lydia giggle. I love the lesson in God’s love–it’s something we all need to be reminded of!

The third book is God Gave Us Heaven by Lisa T. Bergen. I’ve read a few of her novels and liked her so was excited to read this. Plus, I’d seen the other books in this series (God Gave Us You, God Gave Us Two) and was hoping to find a new series to enjoy with Lydia.

This is basically the story of a little polar bear cub who asks questions about Heaven. Her papa bear answers each of her questions and explains beautifully how we get to Heaven. The illustrations are darling, the questions are ones I’m sure every kid (and some adults!) have asked.

But I just didn’t love it. It was too much. Like a textbook for a toddler. Maybe for an older child, you could use this as a springboard for a discussion about heaven. But for a 2 year old, the long paragraphs describing why we aren’t angels in heaven coming from a papa polar bear? Well, it was just ok for me. (Ha! I’m channeling Randy Jackson!)

However, it’s always great to see kids’ books with good theology and teaching. So, if you want to talk to your kid about Heaven and need a good vehicle, this could help you. I just suggest you know something about Heaven first, instead of using this as your Bible. Know what I mean?

Do these books sound like something you and your kids would like? Well, I’m going to give all three of them away to one happy winner! Just leave me a comment—about your favorite picture book, why you’re blogging instead of something else right now, or just “Me want books!” I’ll pick a winner this weekend!

(US & Canada only, folks!)
