My kids are on tablets and devices more than I would like. But it’s the way of our world now. So, as my parents taught me, I want to give my kids SUPER COOL alternatives to the junk that’s out there. Here are some of my family’s favorite digital products and subscriptions. These are screen-times you can feel good about!
This is basically Netflix for kids’ shows. But not just any kids’ shows—these shows are carefully curated shows with Bible-based values and Christ-centered messages. I’ve written before about some of our favorite shows on JellyTelly. My kids still love to watch it and I love that I don’t have to wonder or worry about what their watching!
JellyTelly is the brain child of Veggie Tales’ co-creator Phil Vischer who is a highly trusted name in children’s ministry and resources. I trust him and this company so much. Plus, it’s only $4.99 a month!
Perfect for preschool and elementary kids.
This is our most used digital product! With a monthly subscription of $9.99 you get access to over 300 Adventures in Odyssey audio dramas, a subscription to Clubhouse Magazine and fun extras throughout the year like videos, special audio books and more. Our whole family loves Odyssey so much–it’s an amazing and fun way to keep God-centered conversations in your home and give your kids great fictional heroes of the faith!
Right now, you can get a full year subscription to the club, Clubhouse magazine, an Adventures in Odyssey Bible and extra digital downloads for only $107.88.
Perfect for kids 8-12.
OK, this one isn’t just for your kids. And to be fair, it takes a little bit of some control on your end because there aren’t a lot of parental controls. To make it work for us, we make playlists and then my kids can play whichever of those playlists they want.
An like Spotify and the rest, every song you ever wanted to hear is ready for you. All of Seeds Family Worship, Yancy, Britt Nicole, Jamie Grace, TobyMac are on my kids’ playlists. We also have a playlist we use during school–including classical selections and Kagan’s Publishing’s Brain Boosters. We love it!
PLUS, it’s only 99cents for the first 3 months!
I know, audiobooks are nothing new. I used to order them from the library all the time. Then, I discovered our library app where I can download them to my phone or computer!
Now, I’ve got another great way to listen to audiobooks for cheeeap. First of all, Audible has 2 audiobooks for free for new customers. So, if you’ve never tried Audible, get your free books at least!
Secondly, Amazon gives you a discount on audiobooks if you’ve bought the ebook already. For example, I just downloaded a River of Time book for $7.49 (regularly 19.99) because I’d bought the ebook for like $1.99 a few years ago. SCORE. (And PS: the first 3 ebooks in the series are on sale for $2.39 TOTAL right now.)
Third, sometimes Amazon just puts audiobooks crazy super cheap and even if you don’t have a subscription to Audible, you can still download it and listen to it on their free app! For example, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is $1.98 right now!
Here’s a few of our favorite audiobooks: Little House on the Prairie series read by Cherry Jones, Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan (my absolute fave!), Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan and Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool.
Make a fun little gift certificate, wrap it up with a pair of headphones and you’ve got hours of entertainment and a happy kiddo!
