New Things: Top Ten {Tuesday}

top ten list

So. Have you done anything new lately? I have. Well, they aren’t super exciting like jumping out of an airplane or anything. But I thought they deserve at least a little bit of attention.

Ready? Are you salivating at this topic? I know you are.

TOP TEN NEW THINGS I’VE DONE LATELY (AND IF THEY AREN’T NEW I HAVEN’T DONE THEM IN SO LONG THEY FEEL NEW)

1. I made English Muffins. From scratch. Like I didn’t open up a package and open them with a fork. I actually made them. Did you know you just make the dough and then basically fry them in a pan? They were super yummy. I used them for Eggs Benedict. Which is probably the greatest food known to man.

2. I bought an exercise DVD. It was under $4 on Amazon. It’s a pilates DVD which I like because of the stretching and the lack of running and complicated gyrations and steps.

3. I actually DID said exercise DVD. OK, not all of it and I was wearing jeans which made it a little difficult to do all the stretching and toe pointing. But still. I think my abs might be sore tomorrow. (Which, clearly, wouldn’t take much.)

4. I made whole wheat biscuits. You know I grind my own wheat, right? Well, since I’ve been doing that (probably over a year!), I have not been very adventurous. I make the same bread over and over. Once or twice I made cinnamon raisin bread but it came out like a brick. I’ve made drop biscuits before. And even tried to do a Red Lobster cheese-garlic thing to them. But they weren’t so yummy. But these whole wheat biscuits? Awesomesauce.

5. I joined Amazon Prime. Seriously. I am totally head-over-heels with this. It’s $79 for the a year. Which seems like a scam, doesn’t it? But I get free 2 day shipping. Which means if I need to order oatmeal, or books or pencils, I don’t have to load up the kids in the car and go shopping in a crazy store. I can sit on my couch and just CLICK it. Then it will show up on my doorestep in two days. It’s like having a little genie in a bottle.

6. Watching Hurley. You know, Hurley from LOST? Well, he’s not Hurley anymore. He’s just Jorge Garcia playing a new character on Alcatraz. We’ve only watched 2 episodes but I think I like it. Anyone else watching it?

7. Speaking of Lost, are you watching Once Upon a Time? It’s got a LOST feel to it with all the back stories and present day stories in the same episodes. It’s a little bit cheesy with the bad green screens and the modern conversations coming out of the storybook characters. But I like it. And also, they show Apollo bars like every episode. Anyone noticed that?

8. I Drank Aloe Vera Juice. My husband was sick all last week–like 103 fever for two days. The doctor thinks he probably has diverticulitis. Which is a really yucky colon infection thingie. Anyway, Aloe Vera Juice is supposed to be calming and healing. Of course, he wouldn’t drink it unless I tried it. So, I did. And it kinda tastes like electricity. If electricity had a taste.

9. I Made Butter. I know we made little bitty butters at Lydia’s Little House Party, but I bought some heavy cream from a farmer, poured it in my food processor, turned it on and voila! Ten minutes later I had a huge chunk of butter! YUM.

10. OK, so none of them are life-altering or earth-shattering. What new things have you done lately?

LOVE this! I’m definitely impressed at the english muffins and and the butter–I’ve heard both are sooo good homemade!

I’m not planning on watching Alcatraz yet, but I’ve been thinking about re-watching Lost from the beginning. I still miss it, ya know?

And Once Upon a Time….I’m getting ready to watch this week’s episode RIGHT NOW! I heard it was terrific :)

First off, aloe juice. Vomit. It’s much better if you add honey. My mom has diverticulitis and colitis and has kept it at bay with aloe juice since the 70s. It works. It tastes nastay though.

Secondly, my friend Marc says awesomesauce all.the.time and I’ve never heard anyone else use it. Sounds funny coming from anyone but him.

Awesomesauce is kind of a Moms Panel buzzword. They’ve rubbed it off on me. ;)

And aloe/Les/diverticulitis. He just started the Body by God/Total Food Makeover class with Dr. Eric!

So I go away for a little while and you go all I am woman, hear me roar? You make butter and english muffins and grind your own wheat? I either need to become more like you or befriend you so I can partake of the goodness.

And I too am still lost without Lost.

If it makes you feel better I’ve only made the english muffins and butter once. And I decided the butter wasn’t worth it b/c how in the blue blazes are you supposed to make it into sticks?!

Those are all cool – and I haven’t done most of them! I think you just pushed me over the fence towards Amazon Prime . . . I got a Kindle for Christmas and that ups the ante even more.

As for my new thing, I went to a women’s retreat last weekend! It was wonderful, and I wrote about it for today.

Seriously, you’ll love Amazon Prime. I figured it’s only like $6ish/month. That qualifies as a time-saver to me!

PLUS, with a Kindle you can get free books! WOOT!

You’re making me giggle about the aloe juice … electricity eh?
I’m wanting to try chia seeds — apparently they are some sort of superfoods – you can put them in salads, grind them up or make a ‘gel’.

I have never done any of those things. But, making the english muffins sounds good since I’m eating one of those prepackaged ones right now.

One new thing I did was sleep! For 2 glorious nights, my 2 year old slept through the night. It was wonderful. But last night – she did not, which was not so wonderful. But still – sleep is a beautiful new – has not been done in like forever- thing for me.

Oops! I forgot to link to the biscuit recipe. Here it is:
http://info.breadbeckers.com/whipping-cream-biscuits/

The English Muffins also came from Bread Beckers, but I can’t find the recipe online.

And I have a WonderMill and yes, I am happy with it. I was just talking about it w/my husband last night and said, “You didn’t think I’d stick with it, did you?” :) I’ve really enjoyed making my own bread, etc.

I drink aloe juice every day. I have a gluten issue, and the juice has been instrumental in helping my gut heal. It’s also great for heart burn and constipation (sorry, tmi!) Herbalife sells one in a concentrate that has mango in it. It tastes SO yummy, and I add it to club soda for a mocktail. (sometimes I get really sassy and put cherries in it. hehe). Hope your hubby feels better soon!

Watching Alcatraz here (might be behind. Dvr)
We got lost DVDs for Christmas. Eager to watch those. And I appreciate your Pilates efforts. I’ve been known to do an entire preview of the workout DVD before actually participating.

I’ve never left a comment to you before, but I’ve been reading your blog for what seems like forever! My husband and I always looked forward to your LOST recaps and were hoping you would be a OUAT or Alcatraz follower. Any chance you’ll do some good recaps for those shows? This is a site that finds all the LOST references in OUAT. Enjoy!

Is Vera Juice on the list of superfoods? Ugh…I’ve been working my butt off trying to make healthier choices. Good to see others are involved as well! I know I want to try harder to exercise, eat healthy and just be a better person.
