When I put Asa to bed tonight (Monday) it was the last time I’d hold him as a 2 year old. *sniff* My sweet baby pirate is turning into a little boy. He still seems little when he cries for Mommy, runs to hold my hand or kisses his big sis “Eee-ya” ten times before bed. But when he gives me 4 whole sentences to explain something or makes jokes or remembers something from months ago, I know my little guy is growing up!
We have a new birthday tradition I started last year and I LOVE IT! Twelve days before the kids’ birthday I pick out one picture from the each of the last 12 months. Then I put them into a countdown calendar: Lydia’s is a set of mittens my sisterchick Kristen made her. Asa’s has been envelopes clothes pinned onto a string (I might try something more permanent next year).
Every day he opens a new envelope and we reminisce about how little he was and the fun things we’ve done through the year. Because Asa’s are clothes pinned, we now have 11 pictures of Asa from this past year hanging on our banister. It’s so sweet!

*sniff, sniff*
Asa, my sweet boy. I wish I could tell you how much you’ve filled up my heart and life. I can’t believe you get to be mine forever. Every night when I put you to bed I pray, “Thank you for my Asa. Help me be a good Mommy to him.” I am still overwhelmed at raising a boy. But I am so honored God put us together. I love you, my big sweet boy! Happiest birthday! ~Mommy

um i will tell you that is the cutest picture ever…and I have 3 of my own little blond boys. that’s going to be a sure keeper! love the idea of the countdown pics. Since my boys ask every day for the two weeks leading up to their bday, that would be a great way to make the countdown meaningful.

Oh, I am about the cry! They have really gone from babies to kids this year, haven’t they? Libbie talks nonstop in real sentences and I am constantly astonished at it. She reasons and remembers and it’s just nuts.
Love you, little Asa!

Those pictures are darling (especially the one from the wedding, of course!) I love the tradition of the 12-day countdown. For the days, (week, months) preceding my kids’ birthday, they wake up every day saying “is my birthday today? How many more days?” and I think a countdown like that would be helpful, and sweet, and tons of fun!
Love the china plate tradition, too!

Definitely love the last picture of Asa – so adorable – love his outfit!! I couldn’t help but smile at your *sigh* and *double-sigh* over potty training. I had such a hard time with my boy when I started at about 2 1/2 years and then eventually I just completely gave up. π I just finally gathered up the courage to try again a little while ago and am finally seeing some progress now that he’s 3 1/2. I have had many deep sighing moments over this subject. π
oh amanda says
Ugh. It was SO much harder than with my daughter. I started her at 2yo and it happened in 2 days. We did the “one day potty training bootcamp” thing with him like 5 months ago and HE STILL has an accident almost every day. Of course, sometimes I think his accidents aren’t really accidents and just more of “hey, i don’t wanna go potty right now!” Well, have fun with that and remember HE WILL be potty trained at some point!!
Alicia says
What a cutie. LOVE the last picture. Happy Birthday to him!!!! π
Barb @ A Life in Balance says
I love your tradition! My 5 year old’s birthday is on Thursday, and while I don’t have time to find pictures, I will save this idea for the next birthday coming up, and start a new tradition.
This year, since we won’t be able to do our usual birthday celebration at dinner on the day of the birthday, I have a few surprises planned for my 5 year old like bringing him donuts in bed and bringing a few balloons to school.
Dana says
I LOVE this idea!!! I just might “borrow” it next month for my little guy’s third birthday! I made a photo collage from 12 pictures from his first year, and there was SUCH a change! I didn’t think there’d be this big of a change at this age, but you can totally tell Asa grew up in those pictures–good choices π
Angie says
That’s such a sweet birthday tradition! My favorite pic was the potty training one, though. It took me RIGHT BACK to those days, although they were long ago (my boys are 19 and 12). I thought I’d surely be sending them off to college in diapers!

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

TJ / As a devout Destiny’s Child stan since 1997 pnseert, I say without even a hint of hateration that Survivor was their weakest album. It had a few successful singles, but as a collection of music, it was flimsy, overproduced, and devoid of depth. Dangerously In Love was probably the biggest stand out, and it was Beyonce’s album that made it as prominent as it is. Destiny Fulfilled, while nowhere near as popular and obviously a rushed bone thrown to us longtime fans wanting the DC chapter completed properly with one more album, had better songs, better vocals from all three ladies, and better writing/production. It wouldn’t make my list, but neither would Survivor.Surprised to see not a single Beyonce album made the cut, especially if Survivor could make it. Dangerously In Love introduced a superstar and contained what many critics hail as one of the decade’s best songs: Crazy In Love.Ne-Yo’s In My Own Words is one of my favorite albums still.
