I do not do still.
I don’t like hot tubs.
I don’t lay out in the sun.
I don’t like to do nothing.
I want to move.
I want to see.
I want to DO MORE.
Yesterday I was talking to a girl at church about volunteers. She said a lot of people don’t like to volunteer because they work all week and want that extra hour to be with their family. And I get that. My husband works a lot. I want him to hang out with us as much as he can on the weekend.
But I volunteer at church one service and then go to another service because I want my kids to see me moving. I don’t want them to see me sitting still.
I want the obvious and normal thing to do is to MOVE, to GIVE and to GO.
I already sit still too much. I sit still on the computer during naps. On the couch in front of So You Think You Can Dance during bedtime. I lay on the floor while the kids are supposed to be getting their shoes on.
Being STILL is not really something I want for my kids.
I want them to be inspired by life, by God, by others and to GO. I want them to DO more for others. I want them to SERVE and FIGHT and LOVE.
Sitting still would be a loss.
God gave us so many amazing directives. He gave us so many talents and abilities. I want to use them. Not sit on them.
I won’t be still.

I. love. this. It’s a totally different take on the word than what first popped into my head, but it’s perfect. I couldn’t agree more.

Thanks, Erika! It was just the first thing that popped in my mind when I saw the word “still”. I love how everyone has a different take on it.

I used not want to do still either. I wanted to be living, moving, feeling all day everyday. But I found that I am a better , more loving, understanding person, when I take the time to truely be still. Interesting perspective. Have a great day!

I feel like we are a “go” family. From wake up to bedtime, always, always going. But I am not a “go” person by nature. I’m pretty introspective and introverted, which means I need “still” time in order to regroup. However, I’m learning how to be still in the busy. I have to have evenings of nothing {usually by myself} in order to fully recharge, but God has really been helping see that life can’t stop, we have to keep going and that “still” isn’t just sitting in silence {though I’d love that!}, but having a still heart before Him.
oh amanda says
You’re exactly right–being “still” is more about the still heart and quiet mind. Great distinction!

Rhonda Miller – Love the photos. I think my fatvrioe is Heidi and Logan walking down the path towards the camera and looking at each other. I also like the one where they are making a heart with their hands/fingers. Lots of vivid green is surprising since Austin is in drought mode. I am really excited for them and look forward to the wedding in June. Love you, Mom

Darla Edwards – The pictures are all very good and all could be used for dnfefreit display purposes but I like the first one, the black and white and the close up on the bridge with the sun shining from behind.

wow. i love this take on “still.” i agree. we choose to be ‘still’ in the wrong areas of life sometimes. . .
thank you for sharing your heart.

ME, TOO. I end up being still in places that are already a little stale…

I like this, too. I agree with the first comment… it’s a totally different take on the word than what I had, but that’s one of the reasons why I love Five Minute Fridays! Yes, to serve and act on this faith, we can’t remain motionless. Great point!
oh amanda says
It’s why I love 5Minute Fridays, too. I love everyone’s take on words…and the little insight into their heart. 🙂

i love your version of not being still…
serve, fight, love!
in this busy life, that spins beyond my own control, i need the balance of still in my soul and go-go-gooooo in my feet!
oh amanda says
That’s good–the “still in my soul and the gogogooo in my feet!” I like that!

LOVE your perspective on the word “still”. While I do believe I need to leran to take time to be still and know that God is God, I appreciate your reminder to embrace who we are instead of fighting it. I am a doer, a goer and find it hard to be still… thanks, I needed that!

Exactly, I’m a worker-bee. That’s just my gifting. 😉

While I greatly admire your can-do attitude and as a former pastor, I would be thrilled to have you in my congregation – we’re always in need of volunteers!! — this makes me wonder a bit about how you DO do still. As I read scripture – it doesn’t seem like an option. It sounds more like a command – BE STILL – and know that I am God. As an overachiever most of my life, it took a long time for me to appreciate the value of being quiet, of stopping busy activity, of being reflective as well as active. And man, I think it’s absolutely essential for our kids – especially for kids who need alone time, quiet time to re-charge. I think a kid who reads, who lies on the lawn and watches the clouds, finding shapes and creating stories is a healthy kid – not a lazy one. Maybe it’s how you’re defining the term – I think all those things you want for your kids are great things – I just think cultivating the ability to be truly still (NOT distracted by TV or video games) can be great, too. Am I missing it completely?
oh amanda says
Well, this wasn’t really about being still before God. It was just another take on the word–the negative side, you know? About how easy it is to be still, stale, stagnant, static. I don’t want to get stuck in my life and not DO anything for God. That was just where my words went in 5 minutes! 🙂
Thanks for the thoughts!

I’m right there with you! my feet are going from the time I’m up till the time it’s bed time again…but what about “be still and know that I am God” I guess it means to not do anything on our own power but rely on him daily. In our buisness of “doing for God for us not to forget “being” for God. Anyway I am a busy body too and I love this post! Thanks for the encouragement to have the fire that we should all have!

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
