I was terrified to have a boy. I mean, I’m NOT a boy. I know nothing about boys. I’ve never been in a boy’s locker room, a boy’s birthday party or to a boy spend the night party. (Do boys even have spend the night parties?!) The whole time I was pregnant with Asa, I worried. I mean, what do I do? Will I be able to parent him? Will I know what to do and how to say it?
We named him Asa after the king in the Bible who prayed this prayer before a battle, “LORD, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, O LORD our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. O LORD, you are our God; do not let man prevail against you.” 2 Chronicles 14:11
This verse became a mission–a prayer not just FROM King Asa but FOR our Asa. I pray this verse over him. I pray he recognizes he is powerless without God. I pray Asa relies on God in every situation. And that he is certain God will defeat temptation and problems in his life.
Praying scripture is really the only way I know how to pray for my son. It’s the only way I know I’m actually praying God’s will. It keeps me focused and specific. This one little scripture has helped me begin a journey of actually raising a man of God–even though I have no idea how to do so on my own.
Brooke McGlothlin {co-founder of the MOB Society} felt this same uncertainty I did and she did the same thing I did (only with more gusto!) and turned to God’s Word. Brooke has crafted an entire ebook called Praying for Boys about praying scriptures over your son. And not just any scriptures–these are scriptures focused specifically at the things our boys need. With the intent of changing our sons’ hearts of stone into hearts of flesh, fully dependent on their Heavenly Father.
I read the book in one sitting. It’s divided into areas of prayer {fear, obedience, respect, honor, etc} and with each section is a page or more of scriptures like:
May __________ obey his leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over his soul, as those who will have to give an account. Let __________ do this with joy and not with groaning (Hebrews 13:17).
May __________ have a wise man’s heart inclining him to the right, and not a fool’s heart inclining to the left (Ecclesiastes 10:2)
May__________be blameless and innocent, a child of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation (Philippians 2:15)
Now, go back and insert your sons’ name in those blanks. Read them aloud. It’s breathtaking, isn’t it? And isn’t it what you want for your son?
I just love Brooke’s heart. She knows she doesn’t have it in her to lead her sons to be men of God. To be fathers and husbands that follow Him. But she knows the path—through prayer. And not just any prayer, but specific focused prayer based on God’s Word.
Disclosure: Brooke gave me this book for free. I asked to post about it.
I have a challenging, loving, heartwrenching 7 year old boy to raise! I need this book! Is it available in print or just an ebok?
Only ebook!
I was very nervous about having a boy too!! I’m an only child so I’d never even had brothers! But having a boy has been a wonderful joy and challenge. I love the concept of this book and have been searching for something like this.
ps I liked this on facebook, liked Impress Your Kids on facebook and will tweet about this post!! Would love to win a copy of the book!
Ezra is the little boy in my life and let me tell you, I feel the same way about raising boys! When I found ou it was a boy at the ultrasound, I was blank! I already had a girl, and I AM a girl, so I felt well-versed. Boys? Not so much! I went to the park with my daughter and saw a boy walk up to the swing, throw himself at it, fall on the ground and get up and do it again! He did it over and over and over, this was his game. I thought, “I don’t get it!”. Now my boy is here and I love him so much, but I still wonder, “what kind of mom does a little boy want/need?”. This book would be an awesome help, a great guide into prayer for my little guy.
That looks great, I’d love to have it to help me pray for my little warrior.
I have a strong-willed 3 year old at home. This book looks like it could be a blessing to us both!

We just found out we’re having boy #3 and wow, can I relate to everything you just wrote! I need to read this book! I love Scripture and it’s awesome encouragement!
I have a smart, strong-willed, loving 3.5 year old and a sweet but determined 1.5 year old. I am looking forward to the challenge!

After growing up with two sisters and no brothers, I was nervous to have sons…and now I have three! My boys are almost 9, 7 and 18 months. I would love this prayer guide!
Would love to get this book to learn how to pray for my roudy little 7 year old–KK. Needing it more than ever now!
I read Brook’s blog all the time; and love how she shares to pray for our boys. I too needed greatly the Scripture your mission for Asa this morning!
My boys: Tylr (16 y/o); Mason (9 y/o) … and even I include my dear hubby Dave.
We can never pray enough for our children!
Would love a copy of the book!
God bless you and your son!
I have 2 sweet boys, Daniel (almost 2) and Elijah (1 month). After having a girl first, I was stunned by the reality check that was having a boy. What a difference!! Parenting is so different with him as he learns, acts and thinks differently than my girl. I was very nervous to realize my most recent baby was going to be a boy. I love the idea of praying specifically for each child but esp. praying in ways that are geared towards our boys and the specific needs/challenges they will have/face.

This looks wonderful. I too had the what in the world do I do with a boy fear when pregnant. Well, I still have it. My sweet boy is just days shy of turning 1 so I feel like I still haven’t experienced what having a boy is like. This book looks like a must read, er, pray.
The little boy in my life is my 4 year old son. He is looking at me right now with the biggest brown eyes. He already has a kind heart and I pray it will grow to be Christ like. He also is the best to cuddle with.

I have 3 little boys (6, 4, 1) and they are a joy and a challenge. I grew up with only a sister so everything has been new to me.
I have 2 boys. 22 and 5. I pray for them both equally. Not only is praying so important when little but especially as they begin life on their own to be lead by the Holy Spirit in their decisions. Will post on FB would love this book. Thank you.
3 little boys under the age of 5 – definitely could use this book 🙂
our son Judah is our miracle boy, born 3 1/2 months early. my husband and I very much desire to pray and speak scripture over him, even from an early age. and put the love of the Word of God in his heart so that he will not depart from it when he is old! 🙂

As you know, I only have girls but I have lots of friends and family with boys. I love this idea! I shared this on FB. Boys face so much these days growing up. Especially boys who grow up in Christian families since they go out into the world and learn how to be good, Christian MEN and leaders and providers in a world that discourages that. I would love to be blessed with a boy one day. Who knows if that will actually happen!
I have a 3 year old (Bear) and a 15 month old (Monkey).

My baby is 6, Brody. He is such an amazing little man. I want him to be a man after God’s heart. Also, I am an aunt to 5 other little men ranging from 10 to 4 weeks!

I have 9 yr old twin boys and a 7 year old boy. I love being a mum to Boys but it’s daunting when you think about the world they’ll be going into when they leave the nest. It’s so important to pray for them offering them t the lord. I love the prayers that you post on facebook. They are so helpful. Thanks
The little boy in my life is my 7 year old son. Thanks for the giveaway!
Loved those few you posted! I totally relate as a mom to a very active little boy – Josiah! Thanks for the chance to win!
My three ‘warriors’ are 13, 11 and 6 years old!
My little boy is Isaac–he was my surprise boy (doctor’s told me I was having a girl) and he has brought me so much joy. He’s 17 mos. and I would love to pray more intentionally for him each day.
I hope to have a little boy someday to share this wisdom with him.

I have a cool boy (age 10 weeks) and can completely relate. Since my husband’s an atheist, I feel extra anxiety about Christian role models for him. This book sounds like a good way for me to do what I can, while being content to leave what I can’t do in God’s hands.
(Easier said than done, of course)
I have one awesome, about to be 2 son. silenttributary at yahoo dot com
oh I can so relate to your post…..having a boy after two girls …..I was apprehensive….he is barely two and a joy but I know raising him will be quite different from my girls.
