I love my blog.
I just re-read some of my favorite posts…and the amazing comments that you all left. And I have tears running down my face.
I’m so thankful that God has given me this space. I get to talk, to process, to meet, to mingle and to show off. And I’ve been able to record special times withΒ my kids, my family and my friends. I’ve even been able to write emotions and thoughts that would be lost in the fast-moving pace of life.
But I’m also struggling with my blog.
I’m going to be real honest with you, ok?
In November after I started my blog, I did a big Christmas series called Oh, Ho, Ho! And I got a lot of visitors and traffic from it. Also a lot of readers and friends. And from then on, my blog has not grown. Oh, I’ve had some spikes in traffic. I’ve had more friends. But at the same time, other friends have moved on. (No offense taken. It’s just the ebb and flow of blogging.) I’ve had opportunities, which now I realize (and hope you do, too) is a lot of right-place-right-time kinda thing.
But basically, here’s what happens–I write my Top Ten {Tuesday} and then my traffic plummets until the next Tuesday. I’m in a constant up and down up and down.
(yes, those are my actual stats)
And I feel kinda bad that my whole week of blogging is Top Ten {Tuesday}, Wordless Wedneday/Retro Photo and Saturday’s New Favorite. That leaves only Monday, Thursday and Friday for “real” posts. And if you throw a review or bloggy opportunity in once or twice a month, it feels like I don’t even post about good stuff anymore. About those things that make me cry. And make you leave good comments.
This is all coupled with Impress Your Kids, my crafty parenting blog. Do you read it? I’m not assuming you do. In fact, I rarely link to it on here because I hate self-promotion. Well, I don’t hate it. I’m just not that great at it.
Anyway, Impress Your Kids has grown 300% since January. I have more subscribers at Impress Your Kids than I do here. I have equal if not BETTER traffic there. And it’s the real heart of who I am. It’s my real passion. I want to help parents impress God’s Word on their kids’ hearts. That’s what I did as a Children’s Pastor. It’s what I strive to do with my own kids. Impress Your Kids is the marriage of the two.
So, here I am knocking out TWO posts every single day–one here and one for Impress Your Kids (Not to mention my monthly guest blogging gigs!). It’s killin’ me. I used to be able to write during naps and be done with it. Now, in order to get 2 good posts a day, I have to get up early, write during breakfast, naps and at night.
But I can’t do that anymore. The past few weeks I’ve sworn off blogging at night. I need to spend time with my husband.
I can’t do early mornings any more because I need some actual ME time. I need some GOD time.
And sometimes (yes, it actually happens) I have to clean my house and do the dishes.
So, what am I trying to say? Am I trying to string you along to announce ohAmanda is going out of business?
Heck, no.
I couldn’t leave this place. I’ll be blogging here until the fat lady sings, the cows come home or blogging is dead.
But I just want you to know, my friends and readers, that I just can’t write every day. I pride myself on posting 6 days a week. But it’s just too hard for me. I’m going to have to cut back here so I can write better and more concise at Impress Your Kids.
And I know I could have just stopped posting and most of you would have never noticed. (Really, I’m not that vain. I know you aren’t refreshing my blog every day to see if/when I posted.) But I feel like I have an obligation to tell you. You’re the reason I write. If I didn’t have the interaction from you, I’d pick up a pencil and write in a journal.
I’m hoping this is good for ohAmanda, too. I want to bring quality content and not throw something on the screen just to fill it up. So, you’ll still love me? Even just 4 or 5 times a week?
Amy@P2P says
I feel for you and completely understand. When I had 4 or 5 blogs going at once, I felt so overwhelmed. I’ve given several of them up and it’s the best decision I ever made. Yeah, my monthly income has taken a big hit but even with that loss, the time I’ve gained with my family is so much more. Kudos to you for making that tough decision. As a reader of IYK, I’m so happy that you’re devoting time to it!
oh amanda says
I cannot imagine 4 or 5 blogs! And thanks for reading IYK! π
Heather @ Not a DIY Life says
I don’t blog as much as I used to and I feel good about that because I took the pressure off myself. I blog when I have something to say. Being a wife & mom (& yes, a child of God) take a higher priority. They have to.
All that to say, I’m glad you’re taking the pressure off. Hugs.
oh amanda says
Yeah, surprisingly there are more important things than blogging. *wink*
Ashley Pichea says
Quality is WAY better than quantity! Give yourself a bit of a break – enjoy your family!
oh amanda says
Thanks, Ashley!
courtney says
Oh my gosh, I don’t know how you do it posting on 2 blogs every day! Good grief, take a break! π I’ve really enjoyed IYK from a ministry/parent perspective and part of that is because I have gotten to know your heart here… start doing what works best for you and your family, most likely that will lead to quality(not quantity) content at both blogs! xoxo
oh amanda says
It’s true, Courtney. I spill my whole heart by having 2 blogs. I can’t put everything into one or the other. I have to do both. And good grief–thanks for reading BOTH my blogs! π
Lindsay @ Just My Blog says
We still love you. Or at least I do. Blogging daily is super hard and is an unrealistic expectation to hold yourself to. Impress Your Kids is an amazing blog and if you feel that’s where your heart is, then I strongly encourage you to follow your heart. Blogging is about self and about passion. If you lose those, then you’ve lost blogging. Enjoy yourself and follow your passion.
oh amanda says
True. Passion is where it’s at! Thanks!
MainlineMom says
Six times a week is a LOT. I don’t make any money from my blog but I aim for five times a week…sometimes it just doesn’t cut it. And my traffic does not really grow. I had a big boost during 31DBBB but it has fallen back to where it was. I just don’t believe in forcing it…good content is not forced. Give yourself a break, your readers will still be here.
oh amanda says
so good—> “Good content is not forced.”
Kelsey says
I’m a fairly new reader, and I really enjoy your blog. I’ll still read anytime you come up in my feed reader, even if it’s not 6 days a week! Go easy on yourself–you’ve got a family, another blog, and a relationship with God to keep going. Your readers will get that, and admitting it like you’ve done here helps people (like me) who feel like we need to do it all to just chill out and focus on what God’s priorities are instead of on what we think we need to do!
oh amanda says
Thanks for reading, Kelsey! I think blogging has these false expectations and rules. We need to remember that they are just that–false!
Sarah says
Thank you so much for writing this! Just last night I told my husband I am th-is close to shutting down my blog. Not because I don’t love it, but because of the pressures I place on myself for it. What started off as an outlet threatens to turn into something less than fun. So I’ve spent the last week writing less than amazing content, dealing with the blows to my pride as my stats drop and re-evaluating what I’m really wanting from it all. So know you’re not alone!
oh amanda says
That’s it, Sarah—the pressure I place on myself about it. I’m sure if I only posted 4x a week anyway, no one would ever notice. I just feel this NEED to do so. Ugh.
Holly at Tropic of Mom says
Just wanna say you are awesome.
I tried doing two blogs. It’s hard.
oh amanda says
Thank you, Holly! I think YOU are awesome. I’ve followed your blog(s) almost since the beginning of my bloggy-life!
Jen @ BigBinder says
Dear Amanda. (Dear Oh Amanda?) I have had 18 different personalities for my blog. I think of it more as an evolution than anything else π My numbers are all over the place too – and I didn’t like that so I tried to write AMAZING, INFORMATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL posts every day that were relevant to a local AND a national audience.
I realized that feeling ‘blessed’ to stay home with my kids was ridiculous if I was just blogging all the time – so my blog numbers? All out of balance. They look just like yours. Up, down, up down. So is my content sometimes. But my life is in balance (usually) and it is totally worth it. I like my writing better though, and I am excited instead of exhausted by blogging.
Another thing, my Dear Oh Amanda: there are a lot of bloggers out there. I can count on one hand the ones I consider to have blogging integrity, and you are one of them. I am not disappointed at all that you are sharpening your saw and taking some days off. Love your blogs, girl.
oh amanda says
Jen, what a splendid comment. This is so how I feel sometimes — “AMAZING, INFORMATIVE, INSPIRATIONAL posts every day that were relevant to a local AND a national audience”. And I’m so happy to hear that THAT balance isn’t really balance at all. Great insight.
And your compliments bless me beyond belief. Thank you.
clisty says
wha? You started OhAmanda last November? That’s when I started reading you I think. Wow, ok, you began blogging with a huge audience then. Most blogs dont get that lucky that quick. You had trips and all sorts of stuff going on from the get-go. That is unusual.
If you are blogging to make $ then this big dip in readers would be a problem. But if you’re not blogging for $ then what the fly does it matter what your numbers are? Do not let your kids grow up and tell you how they remember you always on your computer blogging. No blog is that important. I did wonder why/how you were able to post so often.
Most of the time I click on your Top Ten posts. I haven’t gone to the Impress Your Kids site, maybe once or twice. And the Retro Photo Day I’ve only read once.
oh amanda says
Oh, no! I started ohAmanda in 2006! Thanks for your comments & insight! π
Anne@LittleSproutBooks says
I think 2 posts six days a week would be insanity in my life – I say good for you for knowing your priorities and when you need to cut back!
oh amanda says
Thanks, Anne! I’m glad to know others think it’s insane, too! LOL!
Tracey says
It was so refreshing to read this post! Just last week, I wrote a post with a nearly identical theme – http://girlstogrow.blogspot.com/2010/10/pressure-relieved.html (Okay, I think that’s self-promotion, but it’s not really meant to be!)
I have to let myself be free to enjoy my life and live in the moments without obsessing over what I’m going to write about on my blog tomorrow. I was so thrilled today when a commenter said that she felt the “joy” in my post! While I may not write every day, that’s definitely what I want to portray when I do post!
oh amanda says
Tracey: Thanks for linking to your post, I’m going to read it now! Love what you said about joy!!
Amanda D says
I really enjoy your writing here so I’ll miss your daily posts, but I totally get where you are coming from! Doing less can be more. And good for you for realizing what you need and going with it!
oh amanda says
Thank you, Amanda! π
Mary @ Giving Up on Perfect says
Amanda, I don’t have two blogs to maintain and yet, this is SO MUCH how I’ve been feeling lately! Thank you for being brave enough to put it into words and generous enough to share it with us. I love you and your blog no matter how often – or not – you post!
oh amanda says
Mary, you’re the best! Thank you!
Erica says
I have to tell you that I am one of those silent lurkers that reads your blog everyday on my google reader even though I don’t ever post a comment. I can’t tell you how many times I have started to write something and then whatever I am about to say feels silly or not relevant so I erase it. However, yours is one of a very few blogs that I actually do read every.single.day! I don’t say that to pressure you to write every day though! I also read IYK everyday and am so blessed by what you write there but I do love the personal touch that comes from this blog.
I say all that to let you know that even if your numbers aren’t huge you are still touching lives! However, the well being of you and your family is much more important than posting something on this blog everyday! Focus on what’s important and the small things will fall into place! (I think I read a blog post about that once with a rock and sand illustration!) π
Hope this encourages you!
oh amanda says
Erica–thank you for delurking! I’m honored (and flabbergasted) that you read every day! Thank you for your sweet comments–they are such an encouragement to me!
Melissa says
Glad you shared….give yourself grace not to keep up. Don’t feel like you’re letting anyone down. I love both your blogs, but don’t put unreal expectations on yourself. If God wants you post a certain number of times a week, he’ll give you the time to do it. And if He doesn’t then you can do what you can. Keep the main thing the main thing….God, husband, kids, family ……..later down the list “the blogs”. I don’t think any of us will be on our death bed someday and wish we’d have blogged more. There’s a time and season for everything : ) Grace & Peace to you ; )
oh amanda says
Melissa: “keep the main thing the main thing” is exactly right! Thank so much!
Staci says
Good grief! Who expects you to post everyday?!?! They need to get a life π
Yay! Glad you’re taking a break! Now you’ll have more time for me! Hahahaha!
oh amanda says
That’s right, Stace. It’s all about you. Hmmm….I think I feel a blog post comin’ on. π
Becky says
Honestly Amanda, that’s why I don’t blog as much as I used to- I needed to focus on me and the kids.
oh amanda says
So true, Beck!
Bridget says
Well, you know I love Impress Your Kids, but I love this blog, too!
(I’m just one of those horrible lurkers who reads in my feed reader and rarely comments.)
But I completely understand the need to back off. I’ve cut back on my writing commitments lately because I was feeling the same way. I enjoy it all, but it had just gotten to be too much.
oh amanda says
Thanks for delurking to pay such a nice compliment! π
Tricia says
Well you know I read both of your great blogs!! Good for you for ending the writing at night to spend time with your hubby. Both of your blogs are a ministry but as you know shouldn’t come before time with the Lord or your family. The Lord will continue to use you in the blogosphere if that’s where He has called you…..whether it is 2 days, 4 days, or 6 days.
…Always appreciate your honesty!
oh amanda says
Thank you, Tricia! And thank you for reading IYK and ohAmanda. I’m always privileged to see your comments! {PS: finally finally sent your giftcard out!}
Kat @ Inspired To Action says
Six times a week on two blogs? I struggle to write 2 real posts a week for 1 blog. You’re amazing!
I’m sure this will only be good for you, though.
oh amanda says
Kat. You do NOT struggle to write anything. You have a gift, girlfriend. And btw, I have never seen ANYONE write as many outstanding guest posts as you! You’re a bloggy hero! π
Julie Anne says
I loved that you shared your actual stats… I am so slow in the blogging world I don’t know how to view my stats, much less copy and paste them into my blog! I do enjoy your blog, and I love Impress Your Kids… even did the subway art canvas recently for my kids rooms. I think that I would get more readers if i would just blog more, but maybe not. I don’t think you need to blog every day, just twitter when you do… that’s where I click over to most blogs! π
oh amanda says
Yay for the subway art! Did you take pics? I wanna see! Thanks for your encouragement–don’t worry, I can’t stop Twitter either! π
Julie Anne says
Here’s the blog post I did on the subway art… thanks again for the inspiration!!

Leigh says
Oh, sweetheart… I understand. And WE LOVE YOU no matter what. I’m just glad you’re here!!!
oh amanda says
Love you, girlfriend. xo
Katie says
I subscribe now after “re-meeting” you at the OAMM tweet-up, and everyday or not, I am enjoying reading. π I’ve glanced at Impress Your Kids, but my son is not old enough for the fun stuff yet, so I will have to hold off on that for a while.
Funny story – when I began “mommy blogging” I attempted to participate in linkies all the time, try product promotions, blah blah blah. And I did for a while but blogging felt stale and weird. So many bloggers can do all that with sincerity, but it was not working for me. Then I wrote this post late one night when I just used my computer screen as a journal, and it changed everything for my little blog. It’s simple and rambling, but it reminded me why I write in the first place. Here it is. π
http://mamathereader.com/2010/09/12/the-post-that-rambles-from-one-thing-to-another/
Not that it is fabulous or that it quadrupled my traffic or anything, but I think it changed the blog FOR ME in that it became a journal in the truest sense and I look forward to blogging when I have something to say or reflect on now. I don’t know that my blog will ever amount to anything other than a place for me to write, but I am already looking back at posts and feeling so grateful that I have that moment written down. If others read, cool. If they don’t, I’m still happy I have it.
So this longest-comment-ever is to say that I love reading the Top Ten Tuesdays, the New Favorites, and all the bloggy promotion fun stuff you’ve got, but Oh Amanda is obviously AMANDA’S space and you should write what you feel like when you feel like it – whether it’s one post a week or 7. If that even makes sense…..
We’ll stick around.
oh amanda says
Katie, you are so sweet! I subscribed to your blog, too! (Of course, I don’t think I’ve cracked my feedreader open since then!) I’m off to read your post!
heidi @ wonder woman wannabe says
I’ve been coming to some of the SAME conclusions and I only write one blog (plus a family chronicle for distant relatives to keep up with our kidlets that only get’s updated once a mo., if I’m lucky!) π
I found my way here just recently through one of your guest posts that made an impression on me. I think your new goals sound just about right!
oh amanda says
Thank you, Heidi! So glad you found my blog–and happy you commented! π
Naomi says
I still love you!
Just wanted to let you know you are one of my favourite blogs to read. Like my go to blog when I’m too lazy to go through my blog reader, which is most of the time π
oh amanda says
*blush* Thank you, Naomi!!
Alicia's Homemaking says
Oh, this is SO REFRESHING. It’s amazing the pressure we put on ourselves to meet expectations that (many times) people don’t even have.
This was just what I needed to read this morning. Thank you!
I think you’re awesome, Amanda. I’ll still be reading, however often you post.
oh amanda says
I know I’ve responded to you via twitter about this–but thank you for your sweet words and encouragement! Love you, friend!
adventuresinbabywearing says
I think all of us dinosaur bloggers π go through this. I feel it cycles- where things are like when you first started and then it spikes and then lulls again… then cycle all over. Oh goodness, if I was graded on blogging for 5 years and my amount of readership/stats according to that- whoever is keeping track would probably call me a failure. But it depends on what you have a blog for. If it’s just to journal about your life online, do just that. Whoever is meant to read it at that moment landed there at the right time. Sprinkle the other things like reviews or opportunities in there when they come but no matter what, you come first. It’s more fulfilling. And I think that’s what you’re doing anyway.
I’ve changed a LOT- where once I would be thrilled to be asked to go to write for another site, go to an event or get a nice product, now I see THAT as a burden. And it’s easier to say no to those things because most of all, I just want to write and be me. And the awesome thing is that we can do whatever we want. π
Not sure if this makes any sense at all, but I get your heart here.
Steph
oh amanda says
Ahh, the dinosaurs! I know that blogging ebbs and flows. And no matter what, it will never be like it was before. Our voice is bigger than it was. Blogs reach farther (further?) than they ever have. But, you’re right, at the heart–even tho’ I write for an interactive community–I still write for myself. It will be interesting to see where blogging goes…and where we all go with it! Thanks, Steph! π
Leah says
Hey Amanda! I just wanted to let you know that I LOVE your blogs! I have one but can barely come up with anything to say more than once a week! I can’t imagine being as creative as you to have two blogs!
Have a great day and please, keep doing what you are doing. You are an encouragement to me as a new mommy!
oh amanda says
Thank you so much, Leah! It’s an honor to know I’ve encouraged you! π
Lisa~ says
I am amazed that you are writing 6 days a week for 2 blogs! I am so glad you are listening to your instincts and slowing down a little. I agree with everyone else here…we enjoy your blog no matter how often you write. You go be yourself and we’ll love you. π Lis~
oh amanda says
Thank you, Lisa! When I look at the numbers–6 days times 2, I see it’s crazy, too!
Stacey @ Tree, Root, and Twig says
I still love you so much that my arms just want to give you a GREAT BIG HUG! I *so* get this post, and have been finding itty bitty ways to scale back, even as I launch my own small social media-centric business. I’ve had a blog post in my head for days – “Where No One Knows Your Name” – about sometimes wishing no one knew who I was or had a blog, etc. Anywhoo, thanks for this post, and for caring about us, and for wanting to give us a head’s up. Do what you need to do! We’re still gonna be here!!
oh amanda says
Oh, Stacey! You’re the best! I love the idea–social media is so crazy for those of us that are super into it. It’s weird to have yourself so out there and feel like people depend on you. (Which I know they don’t but there’s just this THING that pushes you!) Thanks again!
Jenna @ Newlyweds says
Your so right, don’t kill yourself. I have stepped back from my blog some also, and feel like a better mother, wife and blogger!
oh amanda says
Jenna: thanks! I’m glad to hear you can tell a difference. It’s true w/anything we set aside–we’ll get more time/energy to do the really important things!
Tracy @HallofFameMoms says
At Relevant Crystal Paine (moneysavingmom) opened the conference with a keynote about priorities and consequences. It was a great message. I personally have 2 blogs and could not give equal time to both. And I don’t feel like I have to blog everyday at any one of them. Don’t feel like you do either π
God and family must be first! Without God’s purpose, what good are our efforts blogging?
If you want my notes from Crystal’s message let me know and I’ll type them up for you. You should see this video she shared as well…its really good…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6m9WnNdpSw
Its about putting the “big rocks” in first π
oh amanda says
Tracy: look at this post I wrote for Motherhood Your Way–exactly the same thing as that video!! http://motherhood.yourway.net/time-management-for-busy-moms/
And I was following twitter during her keynote. Good stuff! Thank you!
Michelle Ayers says
Of course I will still love you even if you only blog here occasionally.
; )
Michelle
oh amanda says
Thanks, Michelle! π
Katherine says
Totally will still be reading, don’t you worry! π My blog is a much smaller-scaled version but I have similar spikes, and I really can’t post more than 4-5 times a week without logging onto it on the weekends. But I like to unplug during that time, so 4-5 posts it is π
oh amanda says
Katherine! Thank you! I love that you unplug on the weekends…it’s needed, huh?
Muthering Heights says
The great thing about blogging is that you can do it on your own schedule…enjoy that sweet family! π
oh amanda says
That’s true! Social media is in such real time that it’s easy to get swept away. But you’re right, it is really on MY time! Thanks!
The Diaper Diaries says
I would read you if you posted once a month. And you could write drivel and I would come back every day. And who really cares if you blog anymore at all. Blogging is the reason you met me which is pretty much the pinacle of your blogging career. After that the only place to go is down. #justsayin
Love you to death!!!
oh amanda says
Clearly. You complete me.
Angie @ Many Little Blessings says
I think this is the best move possible for you. There is absolutely no reason for you to have to post six days a week on both blogs. I have three blogs, but two of them have writers who do most of the writing (and I just do the editing and some writing). It can be so horribly overwhelming. I don’t know how you have been doing it all, honestly. (((HUGS)))
oh amanda says
Thanks, Angie! I know it’s silly that I feel like I have to post 6 days. It’s nice to hear other people say it, too! π
Tara @ Feels Like Home says
I don’t click through much, but I do read your posts in Google Reader. I’m terrible at commenting, so please don’t judge your worth on me. π
I really, really love Impress Your Kids, and that made me want to know you better. That’s what brought me to OhAmanda. I think posting less frequently here (like, only when you have something you really want to get out) and focusing there is a smart idea. Your loyal readers (like me) will keep reading whether you write once a week or once a month. Don’t stress yourself out and burn out.
oh amanda says
Thank you, Tara! I’m honored you read! π
Larissa says
I happened across your blog by accident a couple of months ago, and absolutely love it. You seem like someone I would run around with if we knew each other personally, bc you remind me so much of myself and my best friend!! LoL Also, you remind of things I need to continue working on in my faith π I check back every few days to catch up and see what you’ve had to say. Unfortunately, you can’t spend your whole life in front of the computer, there’s too many important things that can be missed that way. But keep up the good work π
oh amanda says
Larissa! How sweet! Thanks for thinking of me as a friend. π
Amber Cullum says
Amanda,
I am just reading your blog for the first time. I am so thankful Heidi at Wonder Women Wannabe linked to this post. My blog is very small, but I too have wanted it to grow and in the process I have lost my passion for writing. I began writing to get something on the screen vs. writing from my heart. I have thought a lot about it over the past few weeks. I have even been praying about how God would like to use my blog and if He desires for me to walk away from it.
I love your honesty!!! My stats look like yours and I let it frustrate me wayyyyyy too much!!! Thank you!
I will be checking Impress Your Kids!!
oh amanda says
Amber! Thank you for such a heartfelt comment. I know exactly how you feel–writing from your heart is so much better. It’s more fun, gets more interaction and really satisfies you as a writer! Be encouraged–when you ask God to show you, he will!
Alicia says
I don’t read your blog everyday or any blog every day for that matter but I do enjoy stopping by once a week for Top 10 Tues and then scrolling back to catch your past few blog posts of the week π I really would notice if you stopped blogging here because I love your blog but if you do I completely would understand why. Our families and God (and ourselves) have to come first! π
oh amanda says
Thank you, Alicia–for participating in TTT and for scrolling down! π
Ammie @ Domesticallyobsessed.com says
I am so there with ya! I prefer you blog less and write better quality MORE. Great post and good for you for being honest. This makes me want to come back for more. π Good luck with the other blogging endeavors!
Erin G says
Ok I know I am way behind on commenting, but I have had this posty bookmarked on my phone all weekend so that I could come back and comment when I got to a computer.
YES! Posting every couple of days is absolutely enough! I’m kind of over the blogs that do a carnival or sponsored post every day. Ugh. Don’t fill up posts just to fill them up. My reader will let me know when you’ve updated, so it doesn’t need to be every day. For sure. Love this little corner of the internet, and I’d rather it be full of YOU (even if it’s slightly less often) than full of fluff just so you can post every day. You’re better than that, and so is your blog. Keep doing your thing, and we’ll keep reading. π
Alisha says
I just found your blogs (both of them) ! I love you.. i love your blogs.. i love your linky party….. you are awesome! Okay I’m done gushing lol. Please continue your blog.. you rock it!!
