Top Ten {Tuesday}

Why is the internet such an adorable black hole?

First it was message boards.

Then blogs.

Then myspace.

Then twitter.

Then tumblr.

Then facebook.

Then etsy.

And now?

Pinterest.

The deliciousness of Pinterest cannot be told. I know it kinda looks like PINE TREE EST or PIN TREE REST. But it’s really a mashup of:

PIN + INTEREST

It’s kinda like a virtual bulletin board. You find things that INTEREST you and then PIN them up on your own boards. But with some social media thrown in.

So, since I’ve been addicted to it these past 2 weeks, I thought I’d share some of my pins, tips and other

RANDOM THINGS I LOVE ABOUT PINTEREST

1. The Front Page

This is what you see when you log on. Just a big beautiful group of pictures–some clothes, art, food, photography or quotes. You can just scroll down for hours and see the awesomeness (at least what others think is awesome) or you can start clicking. And that’s where it gets fun.

2. How far does the Rabbit Hole go?

puffball tutorial

Let’s say I’m scrolling and find this awesome tutorial to make puffballs on a fork! (Where was this when Asa had an obsession?!) I click it and I see it’s part of someone’s whole board called CHILDREN (not very creative but…)–all fun stuff she pinned for kids.

pinterest

In which I find this awesome ART DESK!

But when I click that, guess what? I see it was originally pinned by someone else on their KIDS board.

And this is where I find these Ikea spice racks that have been re purposed into book shelves! Which is exactly what I’ve been looking for!

Do you see how this can get addicting?

3. Share

When I see something fun on Pinterest I can RE-PIN (as mentioned above) or LIKE it. Or I can also share it on facebook, twitter, embed it on my blog, comment on it it or email it. HELLO. Could we be any more connected?

4. And Share Alike

But if I find some goody-ness on another site…say, oh, I don’t know: ETSY. I can just click PIN IT (which I’ve just dragged/drug onto my toolbar) and look! up pops a little window!

I can click the picture I want to PIN and voila! It’s added to one of my boards.

5. My Boards.

Of course, I can categorize my pins and tag them for ease. My boards {categories} are: Stuff I Should Copy, Party-ness, Yumminess, Kiddos, Home Is Where, Book Worm and Cute Miscellany.

6. So what’s the point?

I don’t know! It’s just an adorable and fun way to find cute stuff (or important stuff. I’m sure someone pins important things. I just choose cute.) and to find the people who like the same stuff as you.

7. And now one of my favorite pins:

8. And another one I want in my backyard:

9. And here’s one I’m saving for an arty birthday party:

10. Last one, I promise:

So, what do you think? Ready to start pinning? Friend me if you jump into the rabbit hole!

{above pics are clickable…will take you to the original pins!}

{ps–looks like pinterest is in beta. it says you need an “invite”, i just put in my email and it sent me an invite. so, try that and see what happens! If that doesn’t work, send me your email and I’ll try to invite you!}

I HAVE REACHED MY LIMIT

by oh amanda on February 25, 2011

potty training

Last week I tried potty-training my 2.5 year old son.

Some of you are already snickering because you know all the drama that goes into that one sentence. My daughter was potty trained in 2 days at the age of 24 months. My son spent an entire week in Buzz Lightyear underwear and we did not see one peepee-in-the-potty.

By day 5 I was reaching my limit.

I had cleaned potty off the floor too many times to count, I had changed my son’s clothes so often that the only thing he had to wear was mismatched too little pajamas and I hadn’t left the house in days.

The final straw was when my daughter began to offer her professional potty training experience in the middle of me wiping up potty, cooking dinner, and changing a soaking wet little boy.

I turned around and yelled at her. Harshly. Rudely.

Mysterious Strawberry Thread

strawberry shortcake house

It’s just a little box—plastic, slightly musty and the stickers peeling off. But inside? A treasure trove of delicious jewel like morsels of childhood. When my mom fished my Strawberry Shortcake house out of the attic, I was immediately familiar with it. There was no flood of memories or emotion–it was just an intimate reacquainting.

I looked at each figurine with the same delight as meeting a long lost friend. I brought the figures to my nose hoping to smell the lingering fruit scent. And I think I did–or maybe I was imagining it or just remembering. I set out Strawberry Shortcake, Blueberry Muffin and Lemon Meringue back in their spots (with an adeptness that only comes with familiarity). Then I presented my old friends to a new one–my 1.5 year old daughter.

She oohs over their bright (or, once bright) colors. She sorts, holds and plays with them like any child would. But she doesn’t see what I see. She doesn’t see and feel the family and love and comfort and security I see encapsulated in that toy–a picture of my growing up years.

strawberry shortcake house

But my mother? She sees something that neither my daughter nor I can see. She sees a 5 year old Amanda dumping her treasured Strawberry Shortcakes dolls in her mama’s lap. A gift for a friend from her Daddy’s work. A little girl who’s house burnt to the ground.

Mama wouldn’t let me give the whole house. Not every figurine. But some did go. Daddy took my gift of little Strawberry Shortcake friends to work and passed them on to his co-worker who gave them to his daughter.

Strawberry Shortcake. Circa 1983.

And somewhere (I imagine) there is a grown woman discovering her old Strawberry Shortcakes in the attic. And she is remembering them as a gift after a traumatic time in her life. I wonder if she feels the mysterious thread that connects us?

And now I know why this toy of so many is the only one kept in the attic all those years.

{This is an exercise in prompted writing from a Wisdom Workshop at Blissdom. I did not go back and correct anything. Just wrote. Thank you, Amber, Mrs. Flinger and Sara Sophia for the inspiration!}

Something New: What I Wore Wednesday

February 16, 2011 clothes

Before Blissdom I bought some clothes. Like actual cute clothes. Like clothes from a store where they don’t sell milk. It all started because I found Charmed Valerie’s daily outfits and The Pleated Poppy‘s What I Wore Wednesday. They are just the cutest most adorable things–and their outfits seemed well..normal. And I am a comfy [...]
