Aquatennial (Mpls)
I have been saving this picture to use around a big parade-like holiday. So, I thought it would be appropriate to share this week after Independence Day. I have no idea what the Minneapolis Aquatennial is. I assumed it was a big hoiday like a Centennial. I don’t know who Carson, the policitican is. Or why my grandparents took his picture this day.
As I looked at the picture this morning I decided to google Aquatennial. And what do you know? The Aquatennial is a 71 year old annual celebration for the city of Minneapolis! And when is THIS year’s Aquatennial? How ’bout NEXT WEEKEND?! How incredibly crazy is that?!
Not only that it looks like a really cool event. I looked through the whole website this morning and found all kinds of neat history related to it (Chief One Bull who defeated General Custer attended the 1st one, Bob Barker did a live show during one and Richard Nixon was a Grand Marshall for the parade!) Now I’m really bummed that I don’t know what year this picture is!
Any Minneapolis folks out there? Been to the Aquatennial before?
I am from Minneapolis and although I have heard of the Aquatennial I have never actually attended in the 7+ years I have lived here! 🙁
The main thing that sticks out to me about this event is the Skipper Pin that they sell every year. Even though I haven’t attended myself I have worked places that ran specials if you have the pin. It is kind of fun since a lot of downtown places run different specials if you are wearing your pin! Really brings the whole city into the celebration!
That is a beautiful picture of the past. I see that and immediately wish that I was around in times where unique design was something that was still of great value – specifically that car and that house (though I am also grateful for all the tech we have). I love it when towns are able to gather together to celebrate. It actually seems to make the other issues in life disappear for a short while.
