We have a garden! Like a real live vegetable filled GARDEN! I’ve been wanting to get it done since the end of April and it’s taken us this long to get it all together. Our back yard is kinda swampy and surrounded by boulders (literally). So, my husband and his bff built us a little box (ok, a huge box) that actually kinda reminds me of a pool filled with dirt.
“In the morning, I’m going to come right out to the garden and pick a strawberry for breakfast!”
After the box was built, Lydia, Les, Asa and I went to work. We filled it with dirt (yes, we actually BOUGHT some dirt-ugh), dug holes for the plants, watered and generally got dirty and sweaty. It was glorious. Literally. It was so fun to see Lydia picking up big piles of trash and playing with rocks and rubbing mud on her face. Asa played happily on the porch by himself and then would occasionally want to fill up his watering can and get involved. It felt fine to be so…dirty and sweaty together!
It took us so long we were out till past dark and Lydia never complained. She worked hard and with complete obedience and happiness. It was awesome to be doing something hard with her…but at the same time watching her rise to the challenge. I’m excited to do more hard stuff–to let her remember to take care of it daily, to make cute garden signs, to gauge it’s growth and to harvest it together!
Now, all I have to do is figure out…well, what else to do. I know it needs water…and sun. But is there anything else I need to do? Are there special considerations for special kinds of plants? We’ve got tomatoes, assorted bell peppers, strawberries, cantaloupe, cucumbers, assorted herbs, onions and…something else, oh yeah, squash.
Do you know any newbie gardening blogs? Do you have any tips for this wannabe?

My advice is that next year, you’ll probably want to move the strawberries. Strawberries come back every year and send out shooters, so you’ll end up with lots and lots of strawberry plants in all kinds of places that you don’t want them. Other than that, have fun!

Fun! If you have an over-abundance I’ll be happy to take any off your hands:) We started a “potted” garden this year (after reading notdiy heather’s post). Just the basics – a variety of peppers, squash, tomatoes & maybe something else I can’t think of. Figured we’d see how this goes before we make a bigger commitment (aka – all that ‘hard’ work you mentioned for next year!). My only tip is ask … I know sometimes people in the store aren’t helpful, but if you ask the right person they’ll love to talk & talk about their garden … we learned alot from this little older lady that otherwise we would have totally messed up on!! Yay – have fun!

I like the IDEA of a garden, but I’m just not sure I can hack it when it comes to maintaining a garden. It would involve getting sweaty and dirty. LOL!
I hope you get the gardening tips you need. Enjoy a future filled with fresh vegetables!

girl… I’m such a newbie myself. I love the idea of a garden, but the execution escapes me. How about the year I spent tons of money on seedlings and never watered them? Or the year I tilled in some great organic compost and never planted a thing? sigh. So no advice from me. Just big cheers!!!

Way to go! We started a very small garden this year for my oldest. She was very insistent and she’s been pretty good about taking care of it too. We planted a lot in a little space, so I’m interested to see if we actually reap anything!

Yay for your first garden! You’ll find out soon enough what to do differently next time. That squash of yours will likely take up nearly 16 sq. feet when it’s fully grown. That was my big shocker last year.
My kiddos love hard work, too. OUTSIDE work. Now if I could just get them to clean their rooms…

We don’t do much for ours except make sure it gets plenty of water! I’ve got tomatoes, peppers, onions, cucumbers, and lavender going on this year. Someone told me to stake the cucumber vines–get them off the ground to prevent disease–that’s all I know. Last year the chipmunks feasted on my tomatoes and I could never figure out how to stop them…hopefully, you don’t have any of those rascals.

I read Gina from http://myskinnygarden.blogspot.com/ and Jennah from http://jennahsgarden.wordpress.com/. I just started gardening this year since we bought our first house. There was a LOT of work to do since the previous owner let much of the landscaping get a big out of control.
