This is Lydia flapping her wings and tweet-tweeting around our backyard this morning. She was pretending to be a baby bird because today we did another activity based on a Mrs. Rosey Posey book—this time from Mrs. Rosey Posey and the Baby Bird.
In this story, Rachel finds a baby bird that has fallen out of his nest. Mrs. Rosey Posey, Rachel and some of their friends spend the next few days taking care of the bird–giving it a bath, making a next and feeding it worms. During their care, Mrs. Rosey Posey tells the children that someone has been watching that little bird. Can they guess who? They finally guess on the last day—Jesus! The book centers on Luke 12:6&7…
Five sparrows are sold for just two pennies, but God doesn’t forget a one of them. Even the hairs on your head are counted. So don’t be afraid! You are worth much more than many sparrows.
{What a great translation for Lydia to learn this verse in! “Don’t be afraid!” It always comes back to that for her and I can see the Word layering itself in her heart.}
So, we decided to care for our own baby birds by making a Bird Nesting Kit! I found this adorable bird nesting kit on etsy last week and thought it would be fun to recreate. (Hat tip to MissKellany)
All you need is:
- soft materials (ribbon, yarn, string, cotton, etc.)
- container (mesh bag like what onions come in, berry container or what I used–a ziploc bag with hole-punches in it!)
The kids had lots of fun finding ribbon and yarn. They loved tearing up cotton balls. After we punched holes in the plastic bag we pulled off any extra plastic pieces still hanging on to it. Then, Lydia carefully pulled out strings and ribbon from the outside of the bag. This was pretty tedious but she worked hard.
Then I punched two more holes in the top of the bag, tied a ribbon to the top and we hung it near our bird feeder. It’s not the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen but it was a lot of fun to make. Hopefully the birds will find some soft things for their nests. Even if they don’t, Lydia is excited to help the baby birds.
And I’m happy to know that she can see God’s care for the baby birds AND for herself!
ps–I don’t know how very ‘green’ it is to use a hole-punched plastic bag but it was the only thing I could think of! So, don’t send the global-warming-save-the-birds people after me! I tried my best!

i will be really interested to see how this goes for you…i saw this idea too…we made our own using an old suet holder…so far we havent really had any takers…my dad said it was because of all the bright colors – birds like to stay hidden …so i am wondering if that is true or if our birds just dont like handouts

Um…is that really your backyard?! It has a MOUNTAIN in it…
Well, I’m from Texas, to me – that’s a mountain.
I think it’s funny. Music doesn’t inspire you so much and crafts give me the hives. It’s a wonder we talk at all.
Slowly, this blog is helping me be a more fun ….yay and verily….even a more crafty mom.
My kids thank you.
(and no, I really have no idea why I used the word verily…)
