Retro Photo: My Great Grandfather’s Handwriting

great grandfather letter

As I was looking through some pictures to scan today I found this letter from my Great-Grandfather to my Grandmother. The letter is not very interesting, it talks about his day, his Christmas and yes, even mentions me as a little baby.

I could look at this all day: the stamp, the postmark, his handwriting, the way he wrote the address with no abbreviations. Imagine the SLOWness of this letter…finding paper, a pen, writing, addressing, stamping, mailing, traveling and then opening across the country. Isn’t that a lovely thought? I love the LOVE that is poured into a letter.

I want to mail a letter today.

Love it! We lost boxes and boxes of letters, wedding pictures and other wonderful momentos (doesn’t that sound like the candy) when Other Mama (my grandmother- yes- same as blog name- after her)’s house got flooded, but I would cherish them if I had them.
And my great grandfather was a newspaper writer and editor, so thankfully we still have many of his articles in the small town paper about my great- grandmother when she died, my grandparents and mom (and sibs) when they moved away, etc.
I would love to be the kind of writer he was (probably not nearly as many parenthetical phrases!) and also with the loving intent that goes along with a letter. Those letters are a treasure!

Old handwritten letters with the envelopes and actual canceled stamps … you can’t beat em!

I have an old metal box full of letters and cards from/to my grandparents and great grandparents. I love reading through them and imagining more about their lives.

Obviously there was more than one delivery each day, as a number say things like “I’ll be home on the 4.30 train this afternoon – please meet me at the station!” Not sure why those particular letters were kept!!!

Letter writing truly is a lost art. I try to still send thank you letters and notes to family that lives far away. I know I always feel special when I receive an unexpected card in the mail.
