Lullaby and Good Night

by oh amanda on January 15, 2010

When Lydia was a baby I was surprised at all the songs that popped out of my mouth. If you had asked me to sing lullabies and baby songs to you I might have been able to think of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. But once I had that little bundle of precious babyness in my arms, songs started flowing!

So, at night for Lydia’s bedtime routine, we’d change her diaper, rub lotion on her tiny body, put on her pajamas, read a book, turn off the lights and then sing as we put her to bed. One night I started singing these words to tune of the Farmer and the Dell…

It’s time to go to sleep
It’s time to go to sleep
It’s time to go to sleepy sleep
It’s time to go to sleep.

I love my little girl.
I love her so much.
I love my little girl.
I love her so much.

She’s the best little girl
The best little girl
She’s the best little girl
She’s the best. little. girl.

I know, you’re impressed with my  mad song-writing abilitites. But for some reason that song stuck. And even after Lydia was in her “big girl” bed, we sang that song to her.

I thought when Asa was born we wouldn’t sing it to him–that it was Lydia’s song. But of course, my mouth surprised me and our song turned to “I love my little boy…” We sing it every night and even though sometimes it elicits screams because he knows what’s coming next, I love to sing it. It’s a private song…our own little family lullaby.

Tonight my husband and I split up the put-the-kids-to-bed duties. I did Lydia while he put Asa to bed. I got Lydia in bed quickly and as I closed her door, I could hear Asa’s white noise machine already running. As I got closer to his door, I thought about going in so we could read his bedtime story together. But then I heard my husband. He was singing. In his best and reserved-for-his-children-only-voice I heard,

I love my little boy.
I love him so much.
I love my little boy.
I love him so much.

It was just a few seconds. But I want to remember them forever.

I’ve caught my husband in a similar situation! But not singing… He refuses to sing.

One morning when Cadence was just a few weeks old, he was giving me a couple extra hours of sleep after he got home from his early morning delivery job. I had the door closed, but I could hear him in the living room baby talking to her! Back then he thought baby talking was silly and if he had thought anyone could hear him, he wouldn’t have been doing it! So sweet!

Awwwww!

We have one of those songs too. Ours goes:

Lullaby and good night.
Go to sleep my sweet {NAME}
Momma loves you very much
And I always will

La la la
La la la
La la la la la la

La la la
La la la
La la la la la la!

I’ve “caught” my husband singing it a couple of times too, and it’s sooo sweet!
