So I have this weird thing about my name…
Well, I’ve actually always loved my name–top ten though it is. Amanda means “worthy of love” and I…well, love that!
But for some unknown reason I was thinking about this today (and really for the last 20 years)…
1. If you pull my name apart it sounds like…
A man, duh!
I wish I could tell you how many times people have said that to me. Or many times I’ve drawn the letter A, then a man, then a geek shouting DUH!
Come on, try it. Pretend you are pointing out a man, “A man!” and your awesome friend next to you is rolling their eyes in response saying, “Duh!”
Fun, huh?
2. I have the word “and” in the middle of my name. I was thinking it would be cool if I could just sign my name like this from now on:
Am&a
Like a shortcut to my name! (Really, I tried this for like a week, but it never stuck…)
3. I like thinking about my name backwards.
Adnama
Isn’t that great? You pronounce it so it rhymes with Alabama. With the emphasis on Ad-NAM-a. Cool, right? I just might start calling myself that instead. Adnama. OhAdnama!
So. What’s the weird thing about YOUR name?

My maiden name was pronounced Shoe-Man. It also showed up many time in picture form.
I tried to start going by Jessica when I began working, but they listed me in their system as Jessie and refuse to change it. Only my mom’s side of the family (including my mom, but not my dad or sister) call me Jessica. And a few friends from high school.

My name backwards…need I go any further. Thank you whatever movie that was that pointed that out.
Also it seems people freeze sometimes when they’re about to read my name, maybe it’s the more vowel than consonants that throws them ?

People always ask me what “Christy” is short for. Umm….nothing. It’s not Crystal, not Christina, just plain old Christy. And no one ever spells it right. 🙂

Haha, this post made me laugh. I could totally hear you saying all of that!
The weird thing about my name is that it really is just Mandi. My dad wanted to name me Amanda and call me Mandi, and my mom was basically like, “That’s stupid. Just name her Mandi then.” 😛
Also, I share my dad’s middle name, Lee, which leads to all kinds of jokes:
Mandi Lee apparently = Mandolin, Mandela and Mandi Lee said in a long drawn out southern drawl.
And I’ve had more than one random stranger start singing “Mandi” to me before, which is kind of odd. Especially when you’re 16 and have never even heard the song before.
LOL!

Mandi – how funny! I could basically copy your entire comment & it’d be true for me too:
1- spelling … the exact same (and of course everyone always spells it wrong!)
2- I’m “just Mandi” too. It’s short for nothing. My parents were the same way, why name me Amanda if they already knew they wouldn’t ever call me that!
3- Instead of Lee, my middle is Lynn … so I really am a “Mandolin”.
4- The random singers … LOVED that (roll of the eyes) when business clients would do start doing that the first time I met them on conference calls – what is up with that!!!
.-= mandi´s last blog ..I’ll have a side of sleep with that =-.
In elementary school some friends thought it great fun to call me “step-on-me.” Yeah… and then in high school the “ie” would always get cut off on the roll sheet, so my gym teacher repeatedly called for Stephan. That happened day after day. He must’ve thought it was funny. Oh, and another friend thought it would be great to call me, “Fanny.” Yup.

I like Am&a!!!!
I have always gotten Janna Banana. All. my. life. Thank God my family (and my husband now) always called me Blondie.
Another name irk: My maiden name was Rogers and it was always, “Is that with a ‘d’?” Now, I know people do spell their Rogers as Rodgers, but I never met one. If I ever do, I’m gonna ask them if they were always asked about ‘d’ or ‘g’.
Finally…my younger son’s name is Will. Not William. Not Willard. Not Willbert. Just Will. On his birth certificate. It honestly drives some people crazy!

Do you (all) remember that Full House episode where Stephanie wanted to change her name because people were calling her step-on-me? She wanted to change it to Dawn, but of course Danny convinced her people could make fun of any name and she was perfect just as she was…cue the happy family music and group hug.

You make me giggle, A man Duh! 😛
For short (how can you get shorter than Amy?) People would call me Aim… which would lead to Aim toothpaste. Or I would be called Aim I. Don’t know why. One friend use to call me Miami… because I was her Amy… get it, My Amy?? LOL *rolls eyes*
Don’t ask me about my middle name…
With a name like Heidi I get all kinds. It’s usually Hi Dee or to you have a grandfather that lives in the hills? But the spelling of my name is most interesting–HiDee, Hidi, Hydee, Hydie, Hidee, you name or should I say spell it and I have seen it! But I do love my name, weird as it is! I think my name suits me!
Have a great 4th of July A-man-duh!

Um, my name is Dolly……nuff said.
Growing up, I had a very long last name. Really. It was Long. And people actually asked me how to spell it. If I was feeling fiesty I said, “S-H-O-R-T”!
My mom almost spelled my name Jewelee. I tried it for a while, but like Am&a, it didn’t stick. Backwards my name is Eiluj.
In college (Missouri) everyone wanted to call me Julia. And I am not Julie Ann like 75% of the Julies I’ve met.
BTW. my name means “youthful one”. Remember that when I turn 40 in October!
One more BTW….I followed a tweet…

Growing up I was often called “heifer” because it sounds like Heather, and I have always been on the plump side of things. Not great for self-esteem, let me tell you!
But the funniest name for me was a nickname my sister and her friend came up with. I talked a lot (nothing’s changed!), so my big sis would often tell me to “Shut up!” well, you say that fast often enough and it starts to sounds like “Shup.” And so that has been my sister’s nickname for me for years. And she even tells my newborn niece that I am Aunt Shuppie. Nice.

Nothing really original about my name. I hated it growing up, b/c I thought it was old fashioned. And my middle name was even worse… Ellen. Leigh Ellen. I always wanted to be named Samantha. And have flowing blonde hair and thin thighs.
sigh.
Ok, so I totally thought the “Mandi” who commented above was our Mandi b/c everything sounded exactly like something she would say until I came to the part about her middle name being named after her dad. I had to read it several times thinking she messed up…then I realized it wasn’t her!!
Alright, this post SO reminded me of 2 things: One – that youth camp year when we went by initials: SJB, ANH, MAB (Michael Adam Bradley…don’t know why I still remember that!) and I totally forgot his geeky friend. Two – the Philly mission trip where we were the painting crew and we all went by backwards name. Were you painting with us?? Now I can’t remember. There was Icats, Idnam, Luap, Cram. Oh we were lame.
Anyways, the most obvious thing about my name is the spelling that 9 times out of 10 is spelled wrong. Doesn’t really bother me, though. I’m glad I don’t go by my backwards name because I hate cats.

Meh, my name’s not that fun. For monthss after doing a project on it in elementary school, I thought it meant “See Judith.” Turns out it doesn’t. In a round about way, it means “God is gracious”, and that is true, and nice.
It was kind of annoying, but also kind of fun that to get people in the UK *not* to spell it Jodie, I had to say, “No, with just an i, like Jedi.”

Ummm there is nothing really weird about my name except the fact that you changed it and… and that every other person in the world has my name. Sometimes I think it takes some of my uniqueness away.
switch the S and the T in my name, CLISTY. Then say the name real loud, concentrating on the first syllable. Now spend 6 months of your freshman year wondering why the guys thought it was so funny. And NOW, figure out why it was so funny-ha-ha to them, and feel super mad at your parents.
to this day my mom doesn’t get why I dont name any of my kids after myself.
These days I try to go by CC, for obvious reasons.

I was either going to be Sheri or Jeannie, and Sheri won out. The only thing unique about my name is the spelling. Everyone always spells it wrong – two r’s and/or a y. I have no nicknames that have really stuck although I do like it when my DH calls me “Sher” which is far better than the Hairy-Sheri I got in school. And I wasn’t even hairy. Go figure.
