It Feels Like a Holiday

by oh amanda on May 28, 2009

in me

My cousin and her husband flew in from California last night! I met them at church (where they got roped into helping Daddy feed kids cookies) and then it was off to the Waffle House. (Oh, southern nectar of the gods! I had two eggs over light, hashbrowns scattered, covered and smothered, raisin toast with apple butter and a pecan waffle, plus some crispy bacon.)

Les and I stayed up late talking to them about kids and jobs and family. My cousin, Michelle is just a few months younger than me. She was born in Georgia but lived in Texas or California most of her life. She did come and stay an entire summer with us when I was in 5th grade or so. I have such great memories of that summer and those few months created a tight bond from my heart to hers. I’m almost giddy that she is here in my actual house right now! Out of the 50billion cousins I have in California, Michelle and I are the “originals”…the two oldest.

cousins, identical cousins

the cousins in birth order. 2008.

Today her husband, Al is hanging out with Les as he works (Bor-ing!). Michelle, the kids and I will probably eat and rest and shop. Sounds more fun, right? We’ll actually be shopping for camp. That’s their real reason for flying to Georgia–they are going to be counselors at my mom’s summer kids’s camp, Camp Rocks.

OK. I’ve got stuff to do! I might update tomorrow. Or I might not. Too much catching up to do!

The One In Which I Complain Heartily

by oh amanda on May 27, 2009

in me

It’s been one of those days. Well. it actually started last night when my husband and I sat on the couch after the kids went to bed. We weren’t talking–just sitting. Nexxt thingh you know we were both asleep on the couch and didn’t wake up for 2 hours! That put me at the grocery store at 9:30pm.

When I got home Les was installing door knobs. Fun times. Anyway, I decided I’d go ahead and post my retro photo because I found a great one! It’s not black and white…it’s only 16 years old. That’s right, I found my 16th birthday party pics. Well, I sat down to scan them. And you know how much I detest my scanner. And true to form, my scanner was out of black ink and therefore couldn’t scan. Which makes PERFECT sense.

I tried for far too long to get it to work and finally went to bed at midnight. My sweet Asa slept all the way until 3:30. I fed him then put ourselves back to bed. Only to be awaken by his cheery screams at 6:30. Even after nursing him and playing with Lydia he was unhappy. So unhappy that I put him back to bed after only being awake an hour. He fell right to sleep (well, maybe a cheery cry or two…)

And as he was napping, Lydia and I scrubbed the playroom bathroom, picked up toys, vacuumed and generally made our playroom/guest room livable. “What a great day!” I thought to myself. “I’m getting so much done. This house will be spic and span by the time my cousins get her toni—”

WWAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!

And that is the noise I heard for the next hour. It did not matter if Asa was being held, sitting on the floor, in his bed or in the saucer–he just cried. What do you do for a crying baby that can’t be comforted? That’s just it. The question answers itself. I HAVE NO IDEA.

Anyway, this is the longest compaining post about how my usually exceptionally happy baby is making me stressed while my house doesn’t clean itself and my scanner STILL refuses to scan so I can’t show you a picture of me at 16 in an old prom dress. And now I’ll have to apologize for stealing those four minutes it took to read this post. I’m sorry you won’t get those minutes back.

Did I mention I’m nursing at the keyboard? Sorry for the typos.

Top Ten Things I Learned This Week

by oh amanda on May 26, 2009

in me,top ten tuesday

top-ten-tuesdayI’ve been wanting to do this Top Ten for awhile. My bbb Jo-Lynne from Musings of a Housewife has her own Tuesday carnival called What I Learned This Week. I thought it would be fun to link my Top Ten with her What I Learned…and here’s the result. But don’t get too excited. I didn’t learn anything too awesome—I’m not taking juggling classes or learning how to knit. Oh wait, I already learned how to knit. Too bad I never learned STICK-WITH-IT-NESS. Anywhoo…get ready for my TOP TEN THINGS I LEARNED THIS WEEK:

1. Three day weekends should be standard.

2. The casting of Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen in the Twilight movie was perfect. Actually better than perfect because I kinda had a crush on Edward in the movie. It took me all four books to even like him.

3. The expectations I have as a wife will never equal my husband’s actions. It’s up to me what to do with that. I can either believe the best or expect the worst. If I choose to believe the best, I’m following 1 Corinthians 13:7 and setting our relationship up for success. (via Andy’s sermon on Sunday. Totally worth the time if you have it.)

4. Teething messes up sleeping. At least I hope I’ve learned that this week. If Asa’s short naps and early wake times aren’t due to teething, I don’t know what I’m going to do!

5. I apparently look and/or act like Kate from Jon & Kate Plus 8. (This does not make me happy.)

6. Getting your house unpacked and clean for your cousins from California to come stay with you for a few days is tiring and overwhelming. But great motivation.

7. Ikea furniture is inexpensive because you have to put it together yourself. And that is not always worth the money you saved. Ahem.

8. Becky & Kristen are true friends. They helped me discover #7 above.

9. So You Think You Can Dance on streaming video is not as exciting on TV. But any SYTYCD is better than no SYTYCD.

10. Comment love is king in the blogosphere. OK, so I didn’t really learn that this week. But it is always true! So, go check out J0-Lynne’s What I Learned This Week and her fun participants! Leave them some comment love!

:: :: ::

OK, your turn! Write a Top Ten post on your own bloggy blog. Then since Mr. Linky is apparently still celebrating his three day weekend, leave your PERMALINK in the comments. Then head off into the blogosphere to leave some comment love for the rest of the Top Ten folks!

A Retro Photo: It’s Just Not Mine

May 20, 2009 me

This photo is NOT one of my family. In fact, it’s not even my photo. I got it at Jane Kirkpatrick’s blog. It is a photo of her grandmother. Do you love it?! I cannot stop looking at it! Her grandmother worked at a photography studio in Minnesota in 1911. How cool is that? Look [...]
