Oh Mama: A Retro Photo

baby mama

My mom. November 1957.

I think November is probably the date of the photo developing because my mom lived in Minnesota. I doubt they had their almost one year old playing in the grass in November in Minnesota. Brrrr!

This honestly doesn’t look like Mama to me. But as usual, its the extras that make this picture fun–what is she holding? It looks like food! Maybe that’s why they took the picture? Also, look in the background. What’s the net-thing? A clothesline? And is that a table next to it? What’s it full of? And for some reason that stripe on her shoes is interesting to me!

I’m always so intrigued by the things the photographer wasn’t focusing on. It gives a fuller story to the photo.

If you have a retro black and white picture to share please leave your link in the comments so we can all see!

Is that tape on her shoe? Wasn’t that used (may still be) to make the bottom of those shoes less slick?
    Great pic!

What a great find A. I love old photos. Back when I was in elementary school I remember finding a picture of my mom as a baby, kind of experiencing disbelief that she really could have been a baby too! xo Christine

I agree with Janna. I think it’s tape on her shoes too. That thing in her hand almost looks like a little cat with a bow on it’s neck. Anyway, a very cute picture.

Oh and by the way, I don’t think a picture from 1957 is “retro” as that was the year I was born! hahahaha

It is definitely the developing date on the side of the picture. However, there are occassional years that there will be a warm day in November. Rare, though. I’m guessing it was more likely August or September.

Sure looks like masking tape on the soles of the shoes to make them less slick. The sticky side of the tape goes against the sole. My mom did that to all of us kids shoes that we wore to church until we were about 5, to prevent falls on the slick floors at church.

I never really think my baby pictures look like me either. However, it seems like I have that little swish of hair across my forehead in a lot of pix.
I think the net thing is our old, telescoping clothesline. Standing next to it is a ladder. I think I’m probably about 6-7 months old here (May or June ’57)The thing in my hand looks like a little rubber toy. Definitely “non-slip tape” on the shoe botoms! I like the grass. One thing about MN and the wet springs is it produces thick green grass!

Ok, I know I’ve said that in past pictures your mom’s pictures resemble Lydia. But this is totally your niece (at least in the pics I’ve seen.)

I think the net thing is in fact a clothesline. It opens up like an umbrella. They still make ’em, I have one!

I tend not to leave a response, however after reading a few of the remarks here Oh Mama: A Retro Photo | ohamanda.com. I actually do have a couple of questions for you if you do not mind. Is it simply me or do some of the responses appear like they are left by brain dead individuals? 😛 And, if you are writing at other social sites, I would like to follow you. Would you list of the complete urls of all your public pages like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?
