Top Ten Tuesday: Wedding Shower Gifts

by oh amanda on April 21, 2009

in me,top ten tuesday

I got married almost eleven years ago. That is a long stinkin’ time. It makes me feel old to say I’ve been married for over a decade! That’s what you get when you marry at 14. KIDDING.

When I had my wedding showers, I remember how hard it was getting excited about a gift of spatulas or bath mats. Now I wish I could have an Anniversary Shower and I wouldn’t be able to contain my excitement over my new pot holders! So, as if I couldn’t be any more materialistic, here are the

TOP TEN GIFTS I STILL USE FROM MY WEDDING SHOWER
(AND WHAT I’D LIKE TO REPLACE IT WITH):

1. Pots & Pans. I remember exactly who bought me my big set of non-stick pots and pans. She said, “No fair! Amanda will never have to scrub a pot like we did.” Well, she was kinda right. I love a good non-stick pan. But now, well…I’m wondering if all that stuff about diseases linked to chipped non-stick pans is true. Because my pots? Scary. I looked around amazon.com and found this Calphalon pot. It was only like $99. I’m sure the whole set would only set me back a car payment or so.

2. Towels. Seriously. Towels should be replaced yearly. Or at least every five years. Sometimes I just like to shower with a beach towel so I can feel something soft. And speaking of soft, these towelswill only set you back $500 for the set. LUXURY.

3. Slow Cooker. I don’t even think I used mine for the first 4 years I had it. Now I use it all the time. Not successfully, but I do use it. I think this All Clad Slow Cookerwas about$150. Maybe I could start my own crock-pot-everyday-for-a-year blog, too?

4. Spatulas. Ok, maybe I’ve bought one or two new ones since then. But even still I’ve kept the other ones I was given for my wedding. Why is it so hard to throw away a utensil?! If I could I’d buy a whole set of these spatulas. They are PURPLE!

5.Broom. To be fair, I’m not sure if I actually got a broom for a present. But I at least had it in our first apartment. And I still have it. And can I just say that brooms are GROSS? They just seem to pick up dust and spread it around the room. Plus you can never get EVERYTHING up with a broom anyway. I much prefer a vacuum. Maybe I should get a broomlike this instead?

6. Down Comforter. I remember being so worried I wasn’t going to get all my bedding. But my sisterchicks’ families came through and I got every stitch of it. I still have the down comforter but if I could pick anything I want, it would be anything by DKNY Home. How cute is this one?!

7. Toaster Oven. I don’t actually still have this. I remember I got a toaster that I did NOT register for. (Who does this?!) Then, I ended up liking it and even though I threw it away a year ago, I still haven’t bought a new one. (Well, I did buy a cute red Oster that died within a month or two.) So, hubby wants this KitchenAid Toaster Oven because it matches our new appliances. But at $129, I think it’s a little unnecessary.

it comes in red, too!

8. Ironing Board. I guess you probably have these forever and mine’s fine. But now that I have an actual LAUNDRY ROOM, I’ve been getting inspired about a cute and functional laundry room. How domestic is that?! Check out this cool room from Ikea. LOVE IT.

9. OK. I’m stuck here. I thought of casserole dishes, silverware and some assorted picture frames but nothing interesting enough to be on the ol’ Top Ten…

10. Husband. No, I won’t trade him in. He looks too cute playing with a 6 month old!

My parents got sucked into the “you’re going to die from nonstick coating” deal and now they have no pan with which to cook an egg. I do think you should toss any chipped ones. I have a great set of two huge KitchenAid nonsticks that were like all of $15 on Amazon.

I LOVE that bedding. We’ve been married less than 5 years and have gone through a comforter, a duvet cover, and now we sleep with the white comforter that went inside the duvet. Our dog chewed up our original bedding, and the duvet slipped around so much I hated it. I would love beautiful bedding but as we never make our bed…would it be a waste?

I love my pots & pans that I got at my shower! I wouldn’t trade those in or my slow cooker!

I didn’t have a big wedding so I did not get any gifts (we actually eloped in the dominican republic) but now that we are moving into our new house I actually have a list and friends and family are actually helping out!
PS: I love the IKEA laundry room

P.S. It took me about three hours to write my Top Ten list! These things are hard!

And I’m sure your readers will appreciate I didn’t go with my first thought, “Top Ten Ways I Would Like to Rip My Sinuses Out.”

Oh yes, towels, you can never have enough & they do seem to wear out so fast!

1. Just get those Calphalon pans out of your heart and mind. They are handwash only! I got them at my shower (almost 10 years ago…you know…since I’m so much younger than you are ;) ), and I’ve already had to replace the majority of them. I have a mix of All-Clad and Calphalon Stainless now. I heart my dishwasher.

4. I need those.

7. I just replaced my going-to-college original a few weeks ago (BJ’s had a sale). Not because it broke, but because I was tired of looking at. Very frugal/green of me, eh?

10. If only they truly knew how much fatherhood enhanced their appeal. :)

I think I did a post last year (?) about wanting/needing another shower so I could get new things like towels and kitchen stuff. It didn’t produce new things, but I think I got some comments of shared feelings. :) Right now I’m in need of some kitchen towels….seriously, I NEED some new ones, mine are pushing 13 years and some have big ol’ holes!!! Maybe we need to do a kitchen towel swap or something?! – that’d be fun!

It’s funny though, I still have things from my wedding that I use and love! I like that I can look at my favorites and remember who gave them to me.

We had our 10-year anniversary last August, and I was totally wishing we could have another shower – because all of our stuff is old! We still use the same towels we got as wedding gifts. Our CrockPot recently died. We had to replace the vacuum. All of that stuff that was bright & shiny & new is definitely showing a decade of hard use!

Great topic and list! It really made me think about what’s been lasting in our kitchen.

At our 10th year, we’ve replaced our nonstick Caphalon with an 80% off stainless set from Dillard’s. I do think you get a much better buy on the sets.

I’m trying to remember if I have anything from our shower. We eloped and had a reception 6 months later. The only thing i think I still have is the china/flatware that I never use and some pretty placemats that I never use.
So where did all this other crap come from?
I’m packing to move, so I’m not so fond of all my stuff at the moment.

I love this top ten list! I wish I would have gotten some nice white dishes, instead of a cheap yellow set from Big Lots. Yeah, I was classy.

I’m with DesignHER! I wish I got white dishes when I registered two years ago, but instead I let Hubby pick out the dishware so he could “feel involved.” Not that white and blue are that bad, but plain white would be more versitle, and easier to replace when I break something!

I ADORE my toaster oven and couldn’t live without it.

I just celebrated my 20th anniversary last week, and I have to admit to still having my first set of pots and pans, lol. We finally got them replaced for our 19th anniversary by the same person who bought us the first set, my mom!
And no, the first set wasn’t a great set, I am just that cheap. We used it until the non stick coating was GONE. Yep, 19 years of eating that stuff, hehe. Now I am using it in my camping supplies.

Great list! I still use towels from our wedding over 16 years ago…we’ve gotten a few new ones, but I’d love to replace them with big soft ones. So MANY things I’d like to replace. My mom and I decided a long time ago that you should get another shower when you’d been married 15 or 20 years.

I bought a red Oster that died after a few months, too! What is with that?!

DROOLING over that Ikea laundry room pic!

My coworkers at the time threw me a Pampered Chef shower. Best thing ever. I got all kinds of cool stuff that I still use!

I love this list! I got married almost 10 years ago…and I like to say I got married when I was 12. So I hear ya, sister – it’s weird to think of being “old enough” to have been married a decade!
