Can I Brag?

A few weeks ago Lydia came home from church with a magnet. It has a little heart on it and the verse, “Love God with all your heart.” Deuteronomy 6:5 (kiddo-magnet translation) I read it to her once or twice, then put it on the fridge with the 50million other magnets she has. A day or two later, she just started saying “Love God with all your heart!” by herself. We made a card for someone and she wanted to write, “Love God with all your heart!” I was amazed! She’s memorizing scripture! And we didn’t even work hard at it!

When I realized she was able (old enough/capable/whatever) of memorizing, our ABC verses began! I got out a piece of construction paper. I “drew” some apples on it, let Lydia glue some red scraps of paper on it. We wrote a big “A” and a little “a” next to our apples. Then I wrote “A gentle answer turns anger away.” Proverbs 15:1 on the top.

We read the verse a few times. She loved her apple craft. We did the sign for “a”. Then we hung it up so we could see it all week. Later that week we went to the library and checked out books that began with the apples! We talked about the apples and about our verse every once in awhile. I’d ask her, “Lydia, what’s our “A” verse?”  It went over so well, that now we’re on Hh and have made pictures of bears, cats, ducks, elephants, flowers, grapes and hippos!

I will say, without a doubt, this is Lydia’s favorite thing to do. She absolutely loves making her “abc verse” and loves to say the verses over and over. Every week we hang up last week’s letter in the playroom and hang up the new letter in the living room.

This means she has now learned 8 verses (not including her magnet scripture)! I am SO amazed that she is memorizing scripture. I’m so excited to see it grow in her life!

I made a little video of her saying all the scriptures today. You have to listen close to catch it all, but I think it’s pretty good for a 2 year old! (Oh, and here’s the verses if you’re wondering and/or can’t understand her: a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h) And yes, I realize some of the verses don’t exactly start with that letter. But you try coming up with a relevant and simple verse that starts with E!

That is awesome! Isn’t it cool what little kids can do, when we give them the opprotunity?

Did you ever read the Little House books? (I know most girls do) There is a part in there where the girls are with their mother, snowed in, and they have a Scripture Bee – and they go back and forth saying verses, until they can’t think of any more. I always wanted to have a Scripture Bee with my kids.

You’re a great Mum! :D

That’s the most I’ve heard her talk :) So precious. My question is when are you going to teach her Deut. 23:12&13??

I thought you did fine for “e”, but there’s also “Every good and perfect give comes from above.” James 1:17 :-)

That verse makes me think of my mac, and my mac makes me think of that verse.

You’ve inspired me! I had actually started doing that with Pippa (and now I know Romilly’s old enough too, d’oh!) but we only did “A” before she started AWANA and we just switched to learning those verses each week. We might have to get back to the letter verses now. The crafty side of me is all atwitter :)

She’s adorable, and I pray all that incredible truth will be sinking into her little heart and mind!

So cool! How funny that we were on the same page (we are beginning K next time)! :) HC is loving her ABC scriptures too! We read the A verse and story WEEKS ago and then she popped out her answer to me Sunday. It is great when you are not sure if they are really getting it and then in a random conversation they appropriately apply it!

Blessings!

Yeah Lydia! What a wonderful idea. I need a way to start teaching my little one his letters and I love this. Both the library books and the scripture are great ideas!

That was a precious video! She’s very precocious for 2!

My girls are 6 and 8 and memorize whole chapters and segments of Scripture. It’s a blessing to be able to memorize with them!

She steals my heart like Maia does. It’s so adorable.

It’s amazing how kids think and then how we can sneak in reminders of God’s love in there or a story from the Bible, etc. Every moment is a moment for teaching. Just this morning when I was driving Noah to school he said “There’s the cross!” (at the church he goes to school at) and so I said “yep, the cross the Jesus died for you on”. . . there’s many a times I don’t do this but I’m trying to do it much much more . . . just to get the message across to him in the most simple way I can without his mind wandering off to another thing like he tends to do so easily. You do this (teach) so well with Lydia and it’s inspiring to me as a mommy :)

Oh how awesome! I’ve blogged twice this week about how we need to be intentional about teaching our kiddos about God. This is awesome! I love this!

Ok, I’m finally able to watch the video since I am on the computer while Woggie is awake.

Ohmygosh, Lydia is sooo smart!

Woggie keeps saying “gin!”… we’ve watched it multiple times already!
