I have had glasses since first grade. I originally wore them for reading. I used them for reading until about 3rd when my sight started going the other way and I couldn’t read the board at school. I remember not being able to see my teacher’s face in 4th grade but was too quiet and scared to tell anyone I was blind as a bat.
I finally did get glasses to see far away that year. I remember walking out of that doctor’s office with my new glasses and being shocked that their were leaves on the trees! I had never seen them before. I started wearing contacts in 7th grade. And honestly, think it is the BEST invention since Tivo. I just know that if I had been alive with this eyesight in the prairie days, I’d be an old maid. I’d have to live with my parents because I’d be too blind to sew, too blind to clean and I certainly couldn’t cook. I’d have to put my face straight in the pot to see if it was ready!
You know how perfection vision works? It’s 20/20. That means you can read something clearly from 20 feet away. Well, I’m about 20/500. Which means, someone with perfect vision can stand 500 feet away from something and read it clearly. I have to stand 20 feet away to read it clearly. Like I said, blind as a bat.
Once I put in Les’ contacts on accident. He’s like 20/30. I thought I had dropped my contact! I didn’t even know it was in my eye because it did absolutely nothing for me!
Well, a few months ago, Les and I talked about getting lasik surgery for me. My doctor said my eyes were stable enough so I could look into it. I got the number of the eye doctor and just kept forgetting to call him. I had his phone number but just never took the time to call him.
So, today I finally call and set up my consultation. I have to go without contacts for 2 weeks. This may not seem like a big deal but when your glasses are held together by duct tape, it’s kinda bad. Anyway, the receptionist booked my consultation, she told me the basics and then, are you ready for this? SHE BOOKED MY SURGERY! TO GET MY EYES MIRACULOUSLY RESTORED!
I just couldn not believe it! In basically 2 weeks, I’d have perfect eyesight! After years—a lifetime, really of being bound to my contacts and glasses.
I called Les because I was so excited. I had to tell someone I was going to be healed! Then he said, “Can they do it while you’re pregnant?”
HUH?
I dropped the phone, called them back and they said they can’t do surgery on PREGNANT OR NURSING mothers. You have to be done nursing & have 3 cycles! Oh my dear lord. I nursed Lydia for 14 months! If I even do a year with this one it won’t be until October 2009 that I’ll be able to get my eyes fixed.
*sob*
That’s what I get for not picking up the phone.

MAN! 2009, that seems forever away!
Wow…what a bummer. Maybe with this baby you could do a little experiment. Don’t nurse and then compare the two kids years later. That way you could get lasik done much earlier! Leave it to the science teacher to make an experiment with kids 🙂
Ah man, that totally stinks!!! I’m so bummin’ right along with you. 🙁
Amanda, I am getting my eyes done in 2009 too! As soon the ball drops, I am calling to book my surgery!
Oh man, that stinks. I had vision insurance in Florida & could kick myself for not getting the surgery done! lol At least there is a light at the end of the tunnel, right? Just takes a while to get through that tunnel. HUGS!!
My eyesight gets so bad every time I am pregnant. And they can’t change your prescription when you are pregnant because a lot of it is hormonal…I guess this is why they can’t do surgery either. I can’t see anything right now. It makes for interesting times behind the wheel.
OH NO! I was getting so excited for you… it’s a dream of mine to get Lasik done… Well, the gift you will have of your new little one will make it all worth it, even if you have to wait until 2009!
I’m as blind as you are! I think you are who inspired me to get contacts, now that I think about it… Ms. Geiger’s class in 7th grade??? Anyway, I am dying to get the surgery, too, but I keep finding other things to do with my moolah.
Bummer! I’d love to have Lasik. I can’t wear contacts. I don’t wear my glasses. Fortunately, my vision is not THAT bad, but still…
Ohhhhh, I am so sorry, but I’m sure the Lord put your little blessing in your life at just the right time, just as he will allow you to get the surgery at just the right time! 🙂
Sorry you won’t get your surgery.
On the flip side, look at what you get instead!
oh that is too bad, but that baby growing is so important right now, 2009 will be here in no time. HUGS!!
I think you are amazingly brave to even consider haveing eye surgery. I hate wearing glasses – really, truly, HATE it – and I can’t wear contact lenses either, but I am just way too chicken to let a machine slice my eyes (and while I am awake too). It just gives me the shudders in a bad way. Congrats on the pregnancy! I have had six pregnancies and each one was worse than before, but I think I’d rather have another pregnancy than a lasik surgery. (What a rant – sorry.)
AMANDA!!!! One – I can’t believe you didn’t tell me that you were going to the dr finally & Two – I can’t believe you were so lazy on this one!!! UGH … that stinks they can’t do it right now … I was getting so excited for you!!! Where were/are you getting it done?? And correction – I think contacts were the best thing BEFORE, I think lasik is the best think SINCE Tivo (I think the Tivo came first anyways):)
