Ran across this today and couldn’t pass it up:
finished a good book
called memoirs of a geisha
perfect for haiku
Are you impressed? Well, that’s the first haiku I’ve written since we studied Japan in 3rd grade. I really did finish reading Memoirs of a Geisha last night. And I loved it.
It was poignant. And bittersweet. And beautiful. I don’t think I even knew what a geisha was until I started reading. It follows the life of a successful geisha, her training, her work and her life after geisha. I love when I read a “historical” book that opens up a new slice of life to me. I love finding out about a whole community of people I’d never known of before. If you like reading about new cultures, this is one you have to pick up. Now I’m off to rent the movie!
(Oh, have a haiku? Get on over to Mommy Story and link up!)

Memoirs of a Geisha is one of my favorites, too, and one I have actually taken the time to reread a couple of times. I find it touching and beautiful and I am continually astounded at the author’s ability to embody the female perspective. Each time I forget that the book is written by an American male.

Great haiku and great book! The movie is not nearly as good as the book.

I’m lol at your haiku!! I try not to write poetry…it ends up starting with “roses are red, violets are blue…”
But, I have wondered about this movie. After you watch the movie, you’ll have to let me know what you think. And if I need to read the book.

I didn’t read the book but I did watch the movie and I really enjoyed it. It was very sad to me but I still liked it.

Thanks for visiting me from Val! We’ve been doing haiku all week in our house as part of our son’s fourth grade homework. Your effort is much better than his was! 🙂

So glad to have found your blog. I loved Memoirs of a Geisha. It was great!
I noticed you had pictures of the pandas from the Atlanta zoo. We went to the Atlanta Zoo just to see the pandas. I actually posted about it. I think Mei Lan turned one this week, if I am correct. My sister lives in Atlanta and we spent several days with her. I will visit your blog again, for sure!

I also loved Memoirs of a Geisha…great book. You’d probably also like Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See. It’s a lovely book about women in 19th century China.
Val says
Never seen it or read it. a, I just don’t have time to do either these days. Will you magically make time for me??? Purty please? I’m dying for some time.
Great Haiku, btw!

I loved Memoirs of a Geisha also! I’ve read it 2 or 3 times. I was a little disappointed by the movie, you miss so much of the detail.
I had to stop by.. found you from Val’s blog- her tribute to you on her 500th post.

That was a great book. I agree that the movie wasn’t as good, but it was still fun to see all the kimonos and everything in living color.
Thanks for visiting my blog the other day!
