I’m Proud to be an…Atlantan!

Last night we went to the Fox! Oh, if you’re ever in Atlanta it is a must! The Fox Theatre is a grandiose theatre originally built as a Shriner’s headquarters in the late 1920’s. It is an amazingly opulent building. I really can’t even describe it. But think of the old movie “palaces” you’ve seen in the old old movies. It’s even better than that. If you get to the movie early, there’s a sing-a-long with “Mighty Mo'” the 4000 pipe theatrical organ. Then the ceiling of the theatre goes from sunrise to sunset and you watch the movie under the “stars”. It’s magical!

I’ve seen lots of movies there and a few concerts and plays. But my favorite memory was in 1989. I was 12. It was the 50th Anniversary of Gone with the Wind. I went with my mom and brother. It was so exciting, going downtown at night, to the Fox. We even rode Marta! I remember so many people were dressed up Gone with the Wind costumes! And Butterfly McQueen who was Prissy in the movie, spoke at the beginning. I remember we got home really late and I felt as if I had just been on an adventure!

It was just so compelling and dramatic. It made me love the Fox, Gone with the Wind and especially Atlanta! I felt like I was actually part of Atlanta’s awesome history. It still gives me a little shiver when I think about it!

Last night, we went to the Fox with my family and friends as a thank you from my parents for some work everyone did on their house when Daddy was in the hospital last year. (Was that a sentence or what?!) We ended up seeing Spiderman 3 because it worked for our schedules. Not exactly Gone with the Wind, but it was still fun.

And no trip to downtown would be complete without a trip to The Varisty. There’s nothing like eating a chili dog and onion rings at 10:30 at night. Heavenly.

What’s the coolest thing about where you live?

Sounds awesome! I am sure you could say more about the cool factor here than I could! 🙂

I need to go to Atlanta!

I want to go there! Sounds so awesome!!!
Once, years ago when I worked for the state of OK, I had to drive a VIP to the airport. She asked me, “What is special here in Oklahoma?” I could not think of one thing. What a ditz I was huh? Well, we have the cowboy hall of fame… red dirt… stuff…

That sounds so cool. The only place in Atlanta I’ve been is the airport and an airport hotel. I need to go back 🙂

The Varsity…wow, Tim would practically begin to salivate at those words, like one of Pavlov’s dogs.

Lynchburg is really small and uneventful, but the scenery is beautiful and all the nooks and cranny’s, like the farmer’s market, the garlic festival, and all the downtown happenings around the holidays.

Oooh, I’m still aching to go to the Varsity!

The coolest thing about Birmingham is downtown. I know that’s kind of a broad thing, but I love going downtown. My favorite is going to an art show or concert in the evening. Strolling the streets makes me feel sooo savvy!

Now, they’re building all these lofts. We’d so buy one if the schools were better (and they were $400,000.00+):-)

I meant to say that we’d totally buy a loft if the schools were better (and they were NOT $400,000.00+).

    Oops!

OOOOhhhh, the Varsity is the bomb!! I took my hubby there for the first time in his life last year, and he just went on and on about the whole experience! 🙂
My hometown boasts lots of beautiful antebellum homes that just can’t be seen anywhere else. Come springtime, all the women dress in period costumes, and show off all the houses, and tell stories. Our town really shows off its hospitality. We were the “hospital” city during the civil war.

There is nothing quite as FABULOUS as the Fox!

There’s an old neat-o Fox theatre in St. Louis, too! I got to see Phantom of the Opera there with my grandma. Was so fun. 🙂 And soooo funny that you mentioned the Varsity! When Neil was in a different division at his work, he traveled to Atlanta a lot and one of his buds who lives in Atlanta took him there! That was the highlight of his trip, I think! 🙂

I also remember it as I was the Rhett Butler lookalike winner for the event.
    What a great time!
