Is this the best picture, or what?
I’ve told you before that most of my Wordless Wednesday pictures are from my dad’s uncle who emails his kids and grandkids a picture EVERY DAY! Well, I only get these pictures when they are on our “branch” of the family tree. I knew I was running out of pictures, plus I was feeling kind of bad about not having any pictures of my mom’s side of the family–so this week I raided my mom’s pictures.
My mom’s mom died last year. We took all of her family pictures. She was remarried so her husband didn’t care about family pictures. She had some great old old pictures. We even found the wedding invitation of my great-great-great grandparents! Can you believe that?
So, the next few weeks I’ll be sharing some pictures of my mom’s family. My mom is 100% Swedish. Both of her great-great grandparents immigrated from Sweden. (is that right, Mama?)
Back to today’s picture. We found this in a box labeled, “Very Very Old Photos”. There are so many things I love about this picture. Six grown, well-dressed men posing for a picture. The old man in the top left smoking a pipe. The young boy on the right-his smile, his pants, his hat and especially his tie! I love the building they are standing in front of and the one next to it. Look at the guys’ hair, their suits, the watch fobs! They look like a movie poster!
Oh, by the way, the important thing here is that the man in the back row on the far left, is my great-grandmother’s brother. My mom said she thinks the rest of the guys are her brothers, too. The little boy and old man are unknowns. The only thing written on the back of the pictures is a date: 1938.
So, how do you like my Swedish family so far?

I love that you have info on every picture! What will you use when you use all your oldies? 🙂
As usual – I loved your WW!!
Hello Amanda!
I just happened to stumble in to your blog.
I was actually searching ’for myself’. I made a search on my nickname/screen name and got to end up here through http://www.demos.co.uk/themes/~sweden – 14k. On google it said ” This is why… maurice flower posted a photo”. I don’t understand…is maybe one of my pictures here??
You see I have a Flickr.com account where I am using that nick name.
I also like the picture you are showing here. Yes, it looks a bit like a movie poster.
I have plans to scan old family pictures and post them in my photostream on Flickr.
Do you have any idea how found my name…and ended up her. I am not so good at these things, you see.
Best regards

What a wonderful photograph! There is absolutely nothing that compares with old b & w pictures – even the seemingly mundane speaks a thousand words. There’s a bit of romance to them.
I showed this photo to my husband because he loves b&w photos. He even collects ones from antique stores, even though he doesn’t know them. Anyway, I thought that those guys looked very dapper, and he said, “Yeah. That’s back when people had class.”
So true. No sloppy jeans hangin around their behinds!
ugh i just typed out a comment and it went away!
I think it went like this:
i love this photo Amanda! Makes me wonder though… where they are, why they are there, what made them take this picture, what the smiling boy is thinking about???
I love these old pictures! So Cool!
I love looking at old black and white pictures. I went through some of my moms and framed a few for her. I like wondering what the story is behind the picture – why they took it, what was the occasion etc.
You have such great old pictures! I love this one, such good looking men!
They look soooo cool!
What a wonderful picture!! I love it!
I’m so impressed that your family has such a great collection of old family photos and that they still look so good. Bonus points for knowing who most, if not all, of those people are in the photos!
oh thats a really sweet shot! I love how his tie is blowing.
Yes- all four sets of my great-grandparents (Stomquists, Nordquists, Wickstroms and Petersens)emigrated from Sweden. The late 1800s was the heyday of Swedish immigrants to the US!
Mama 🙂
I guess if you are short you are an outcast. How nice that you have access to these old pictures and memories.
