I would love to be able to write about Lost right after seeing it. But last night, I had to sleep on it. And still 10 hours later, I’m dumbfounded. So, let’s go by character here:
Ben: A Ben flashback–yahoo! The little boy who played him was superb. I think he looked just like him. But I did NOT like the Lost writers trying to make me feel sorry for him! (By the way, it didn’t work!) I knew he was a man under authority! Didn’t I tell you? More bonus points for me!! The thing that stuck out to me the most is not that he could talk and see invisible freaky Jacob, but that he met sexy-eyes as a child and then 15 years later masterminds genocide with him. That relationship is w-e-i-r-d.
Sexy-eyes: Oh, his real name is Richard. OK, so we have a role-reversal: Lostie (aka “Hostile”) becomes an Other. Very interesting. Not to mention the man never ages. And his cryptic comment to little Ben about being “patient”. His freak-o-meter just went up 100 points.
Kate: Can’t stand her.
Jackiet: (my new couple name for Jack & Juliet) Make me gag. If they could be anymore ethereal and perfect and all-knowing…ugh. I still don’t think they are trust-worthy. Jack, “I hadn’t decided what to do about it yet.” All-hail, King of the Island, Jack! GAG.
Locke: I. am. in. mourning. IT CANNOT BE SO. CANNOT BE SO. NOT SO. If they kill off John Locke who has a connection with the island, who loves the island, who remotely understands the island and I have to watch Jack & Juliet bat eyes at each other the rest of the season I won’t make it! I guess the messageboards are saying Locke could be related to somoene: Ben, Sawyer or Jacob even. I just don’t know what to say. I’m too sad.
Overall: The father theme is getting bigger. Not only do we have severe issues with our dad, now we have 4 people who have killed their dads (Kate’s step-dad, Sawyer’s mom’s lover, Locke’s dad, Ben’s dad). And I’ve always wondered about the Jacob/Benjamin biblical allusion. Jacob and Esau were twins. Benjamin is Jacob’s favored youngest son in the Bible. Hmmm…
UPDATE: Ok, I have one more new idea: Remember last week when Richard told Locke that Ben was a little off with the infertility stuff? Maybe it’s because Ben’s mom died giving birth to him. That’s why he’s so freaked about finding out how to save these women! He doesn’t want anyone to die like his mom did. I don’t know what that means, exactly, but it’s interesting to think about Ben’s motives.
Oh, but if you really want to be freaked out, here’s a still shot of the invisible Jacob. Yeah, I know, he’s not invisible.
I can’t believe I have to wait 7 days to find out if Locke is…gulp…dead.
What’s your big revelation after tonight? Or your big question? I’m dying to talk about this!
(oh, go here to see some more recaps)

OK! I had a revelation! Maybe the “hostiles” are really island natives. That’s why Richard has never aged. They needed a non-native to do something for them…be some kind of go-between to Jacob, the black smoke, who knows…so when he saw Little Ben, he immediately had a plan in place. That makes sense, right? ha!
you cannot believe the willpower it took to NOT read this post. I did tease myself with the first line you wrote. I cannot wait to watch tonight!! 🙂 I’ll be back tomorrow to see your thoughts on it all…
Finally, someone else thinks Jack is still a pain in the neck. I read other people saying that they knew Jack would come through, knew Jack would take care of everything. Who does he think he is?
I missed the first 15 minutes while on the computer and lost track of time. I can’t believe I did that. I’ll have to rewatch the episode to see what I missed. I read somewhere that there will only be 48 more episodes (3 seasons) and they will end it. Hopefully all the mysteries will be revealed.
Locke is SO not dead. Jacob, or the island, will save him – I’m totally not worried about that.
Great recap, Amanda! Even after sleeping, I’m not sure if I could add more to my recap :/ Sooo many new details to digest and possibilities to add to the mix.
Totally agree about Richard. (Both the sexy-eyes and freakiness scale.)
You made an interesting point with the reveal about Ben’s mother dying in childbirth and Ben’s obsession with the pregnant women on the island. I wonder what else we’ll find out as they attempt to abduct Sun.
I don’t think Locke is dead, yet. The raid on the beach is two nights away. The same amount of time between Good Friday and Easter… There’s also Lazarus who was entombed for 4 days…
Oh my, so much to think about! Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my show notes. I can’t wait until next week’s episode!
I completely agree with your take on sexy-eyes!! 🙂
And like I keep saying…while all of you debate the bigger themes and stories in Lost, all I care about is WHERE IN THE DEVIL ARE BERNARD AND ROSE??? 🙂 The forums and boards predict they’ll be back in the season finale.
And lastly, Locke just cannot be dead. I will not believe it!
Yeah, I can see how it would be hard to keep actors for a show like Lost. *sarcasm ends here*
The actors playing Rose and Bernard haven’t been available this year, apparently. The producers have promised to bring them back next year.
FWIW, Kate’s stepfather was actually her biological father as well–she just didn’t know it!
I agree with you that I pretty much hate Kate now. And Jack/Juliette–love your new nickname for them. But I don’t think Ben would be trying to help the women because of his own mother. Isn’t he too selfish for something like that? Caring about other women would mean he has to have a heart. OK, maybe you’re right… maybe he does care. I just don’t know!! GAH!
I so agree with you about Jack. I was like who the flip does he think he is. Self-appointed king of the island?
Locke is not dead (my heart can’t take it) he just can’t be.
And yeah, on Kate, yuck. I’m so sick of her.
Hubby didn’t get to see it this week so I’m going to send him here for the recap! 🙂 Wasn’t it good?!?
craziness. first of all, i FINALLY got to see it. My review is up. This was an excellent episode and we agree on most things.
Kate was obnoxious in this episode. As was Jack. Can Sawyer pleassse punch him? Just for kicks? Please?
🙂 Great review.
I can’t stand Kate either! I used to really like her but she just irks me lately. ugh. And I totally agree with you about Jack. I am all about Sayid now in the lostie camp. lol
Don’t worry. Locke is not dead. He CAN’T be dead! I will swear off LOST if they don’t bring him back. Ok so no I won’t but I won’t be happy. lol
I have thought for sometime now that there is some biblical connection. It started to come out in season 2. I just haven’t decided yet what the exact connection is since the show goes in so many different directions. I got the impression though that Locke was maybe a “messiah” like figure and there has been some prophecy of a “messiah”.
I’m not sure what to think about Jacob. I thought in season 2 that Jacob might be “god” or some higher power. Then I thought Richard was really Jacob when they did the Juliet flash back. I am so confused about Richard too. He didn’t age at all from when Ben was young to present time. Something is definitly up there.
Ahhhh! I’m just not sure what to think right now but I know I’m loving every second of it! 🙂
